Guests Again

Stanley was here for sabbath for the consecutive late winter. Also in town were the Potters who we hosted about a yar and a half ago. Stanley hadn't seen the Potters in 27 years. Beth once substituted for Mrs. Potter at a school where the latter teaches.

He was helping a crack cocaine dealer

G met me at the Grosvenor metrorail station today and he discussed his day at work. He was working on a memo to explain why his boss's client (an admitted crack cocaine dealer who had a 260 gram stash confiscated) based on a recent federal Court of Appeals (for the District of Columbia) finding regarding sentencing guidelines of crack vs regular cocaine. When we got home, Ann asked,

So George What did you do today?

I responded for George, "He was helping a crack cocaine dealer."

"No. You didn't." said Ann

"Well... " said George

Later I was discussing it with George.

"So you see how good it would be if you were a sewage scientist." I said.

"Yeah" said George I know (because I had told him previously on several occasions that if he was a sewage scientist and someone asked how his day went he could say, "It was awful. It was like we were up a creek without a paddle..."

"of course," I said, "it might be a lot of trouble to take a several dozen courses and several jobs over many years just to be able to use a joke one time."

"and the person you're telling it to might not get it." said George.

Vacuum Cleaner Warranty Actually Honored

We purchased a light weight vacuum cleaner in the summer of 2005 from Best Buy. We got a $10 warranty with it. The motor died on Feb 19, 2007. George took it in on Feb 20 and returned with a new vacuum cleaner - same model - despite the fact that week had lost a few of the minor attachments. George didn't buy another warranty. We figure if this breaks we will get a different brand.

Concrete-like Snow

On Feb 14-15 we had a snow-sleet-freezing rain event. George did some shoveling on the 15th but got tired and went in for a brief rest about 3pm. When he came out again at 4pm, the snow-etc. had frozen into a concrete like substance that was impossible to shovel. I did some work on it today (the 18th) and it took about 40 minutes to shovel a narrow path thru 30 feet of sidewalk.

It has been so cold the past three weeks that ice is on the Cheasapeake Bay all the way from the north tip near the Susquahana to 5 miles south of the mouth of the Potomac. Although much of this is only 30-60% ice covered, this isn't good.

Three Hideously Cold mornings and Squeeky Escalators

This am it was in the low teens F when I went to work. I put on a cloth windbreaker between my business clothes and outerwear and wore a scarf and gloves and both a inner and outer hat and was still cold while waiting for the bus. Tomorrow and the next morning will be the same. Last night I took in the potatoes and onions that we normally store in our Florida room. The room is about 5-10 degrees warmer than the outside (because of heat from the house) but even so, the temperature was cold enough to damage them. Also, the lubricant used at one the up escalator at the Rockville Pike underpass near White Flint station must have been too thick because it squeeked awfully.

Superbowl - Rain there: cold here

Watched Superbowl 41 with DJR. Sandwiches were delivered. Game had 5 fumbles lost and 3 interceptions and only 5 TDs. It rained copiously throughout the game in Miami (.92" at the airport in the 24 period ending 6am on Feb 5). Our cats, if they were asked, would have said that the teams should have had more naps. It was very cold here; well below freezing by evening.
