We've gone Canadian - in part 

With Oz and Tamar here, we began using the small Persian cucumbers. We've gotten used to them and they have some advantages over the regular cukes, e.g., easier to cut, lower ration of seed/solid. I noticed recently that all the cukes we get now are from Canada, even in the winter (see the first image). The second image, that of the greenhouse cucumber plants, gives some idea of the industrial nature of the cuke production. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... In the part of Canada where the cukes are grown, the natural gas is abundant and heating the greenhouse is relatively inexpensive. Also, the carbon dioxide from the combustion of the natural gas is used to about double the CO2 content of the air inside the greenhouse compared to the air outside the greenhouse. Convenientyly, in the summer when less natural gas is used for heat, the cucumber plants get more sunlight and require less CO2. Oz and Tamar Depart 

I brought them to IAD to board a KLM flight. Traffic wasn't bad at all although the airport itself, at least the departure lane area, was busier than I expected it to be. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... The backpack says "Ozzy Weiss" (click on image to expand). Of course Ann and I are a bit unhappy to see them go but our cat seems very OK with it. I think she was worried that Oz would be the new chief cat and she would be kicked out or demoted to adjunct cat.

Oz not scared of the Evil Mouse King 

We were watching "The Nutcracker" ballet tonight. It is the NYCity Ballet version. I remember when we took our kids to see 'The Nutcracker' one year, George didn't like the evil mouse king had a bad dream about him. I don't remember the costume used back then but the NYCity Ballet version makes the mouse king look more goofy (note the tiny little crown) than frightening. Oz wasn't frightened by the NYCity Ballet mouse king. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Oz was holding his panda bear and sitting with me while watching the ballet and I said to Oz that there should have been a panda in the ballet. Oz said, "but Clara didn't dream about a panda". I agreed and asked Oz if he would dream about his panda and he said, "Yes" and hugged the panda.

Our Hanukah Gift is Useful 

After several years of trying we finally obtained a handicap placard. Ann's doctors were uncooperative on this but the law now allows therapists to sign the application and Ann's Physical Therapist did so. We actually got the placard before Hanukah but didn't use it until today. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Today, Tamar and Oz were in a store and I found a very close by handicap space. The image is taken in Congressional Mall on MD -355 .

An Orange Chanukah day 

On Saturday for Lunch we have scheduled some orange colored dishes. One is pumpkin soup. One is marinated salmon. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... We will also have 'white' grape juice which is also slightly orange. Salad will, however, be other colors.

Oz gets gift for first night of Chanukah 

........... First night of Chanukah. Oz got a jigsaw puzzle. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... He got a haircut just before that. The jigsaw is of an airplane and, per Oz, his gan in Israel has one just like that but he still likes it.

Oz Liked the Taste of it 

Yesterday I bought a box of Pumpkin Spice Cheerios. It was on the 75% off table at the store, which undoubtedly had stocked up on it for Halloween or for the autumn season. Today, Oz had it for breakfast and liked it. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... I looked up some reviews of the product. They said that smelling the open box was just like smelling a pumpkin spice latte and the taste wasn't bad.

Trifecta - no lettuce washing 

I had three mashgiach assignments today. I ended up not washing any lettuce which is frequently the most onerous part of the job. The first assignment was 7-9am at a caterer until the regular mashgiach came. However, the vegetable delivery didn't arrive before I left. The second assignment at 1030am was at a restaurant and the owner had purchased a pre-checked bag of lettuce. The third assignment at 3pm was at another caterer who also had purchased pre-checked lettuce. I did have to do various tasks at these places, e.g., opening things and lighting stoves. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... None of these places is more than 5 miles from our house by the way.

Oz Sees George as Jack Frost 

Tonight we showed Oz the old (from the early 1990s) videotape (now on Youtube) of a play George was in back in his elementary school. George played the part of Jack Frost.
