More Fish Heads for Rosh Hashanah

Both last year and this year I was on Mashgiach duty at the same caterer the day before Rosh Hashanah.

I noticed last year that there were about a half dozen fish heads that were part of the order.

This year there were about two dozen.

This is despite the fact that there were more orders last year than this year.

The fish head custom, which I think was a mostly sephardic custom until recently but has been adopted by others, comes, it seems, from a phrase in Deuteronomy 28:13. The verse there is part of an enumeration of contingent blessings which precede the long list of curses. The phrase in question is that "The Lord will set you at the head and not the tail..."

Also there were at least two dishes made with pomegranate garnish this year. One was the broccoli salad (image) another was corned beef with pomegranates.

Yet Another Episode in Coolant Problem

The first image is an oxygen sensor.

The second image is a temperature sensor (near the coolant entry to the

engine block).

It turns out that the overheating in the car (before I could get the coolant problem solved) damaged both of these.

It took about 4 hours today to have these fixed.

And it was 2 hours last week to do the coolant work.

And this week it was another $300+ on top of the $800+ last week.

Boo.

We went through the summer with some very hot days and some big thunderstorm days and didn't lose power, at least that I noticed.

However this am, a cool clear morning with almost no wind, we had several short outages.

I looked at the PEPCO site and at the time I looked, there were about 2000 customers (out of 900k) without power. Can't figure out what the issue was.

Mid-September Flowers

There are both pink and red roses (yesterday image).

There is a cluster of chives on the right (just above a pink rose).

The big yellow plant is Golden Rod.

Monarch Butterfly are big users of golden rod. But we got butterfly in our yard even before we ever had Golden Rod.

Also, at one time Golden Rod was suspected as cause of asthma.  That is no longer so.

Next Episode in Coolant Leak

On the way back from a nearby errand the temperature indicator came on again.

When I got home, I opened the hood and I could see the coolant leak. It was not a pinhole.

Coolant was on several parts of the engine but the leak was coming from the joint between the coolant reservoir tube and the engine block.

I took it back to Jiffy Lube.  Parts alone were over $600.00.

First Post Covid Blood Donation

I was at the Red Cross, Wednesday 14 September, for a plasma donation.

Metrics:  Pulse=86; BP=100/76; Hg=14.6

Also SWAG wise, I picked up another blood donation t shirt.

Took more time than I wanted as they only have one plasma spinner and the person before me started late and ended late.

Some Unexpected Results from Jiffylube

This is a follow up from last week's coolant leak story.

I took the car to Jiffylube today to get an oil change and see what they said about the coolant leak.

I expected them to either try to get me to authorize a leak investigation (image one) or purchase a leak repair product (image two).

They confirmed a coolant leak but said it was just a pinhole leak. Then they said, 'well just come in every 2 or 3 months and we will top off the coolant for you for free since you have been to Jiffylube 6 times and qualify for regular customer premium service.

This was unexpected.

I'm still not sure they mean it but I'll plan to come in and test the system.

Also, they gave me a free break fluid replacement since they could replace the fluid in the main tank but not the side tanks.

Chive Propagation: Some Success

The white flowers in our backyard these days are chives (first image).

The second image is a close up of a single plant bunch.  The roots divide easily.

I've been propagating them for years. Mostly I propogate with the seeds.

Some years seem to be without
success but some years with some success (last seems to be one of the latter).

The chives don't smell sweet, they have sort of a tang to them but the do seem to repel deer.  For that reason, I plan to keep propagating them.

I knew I would get a question on this

Ann asked me to bring her a cup of hot tea.

I opened a new package of herbal tea.

I didn't recognize the flavor so I figured she would ask me what flavor it was.  Thus I put the wrapper in my pocket.

Sure enough, about halfway through the cup she asked what the flavor was (apparently she liked it) and I showed her the wrapper.

Warp Core Breech in 90 seconds

I was on the way home from the aquatic center.  The car was making a chiming sound and the first image was lit up on my dashboard.

I figured it might be a door not closed completely because that results in a chime also but when I opened and shut all the doors the chiming continued.

Then I figured that either the plutonium oxide fuel rods were melting or it was a warp core breach.

I pulled over and got the manual out of the glove compartment.  In chapter 5 it explained that this image was to show engine overheating. The oil indicator wasn't on so I figured maybe it was a low coolant level.

I drove to a gas station and went in.  Then I thought 'what if gas stations don't sell coolant anymore'. Fortunately this station did have some (bottom row in the shelf closest to the rest room).

I opened the hood and unscrewed the antifreeze/coolant reservoir.  It was dry so I figured that maybe that was the actual problem.  I poured in almost an entire bottle (about 2 liters) of coolant.

I waited a few minutes and started up the car.  No chimes.  I drove home no chimes.

So I probably have a pinhole leak in the coolant reservoir (replacing that will likely cost $100+). If it was the reservoir it can't be a big leak or I would have seen residue on the driveway.  On the other hand it could be a leak in the engine or one of the hoses which would be a detective issue and much more expensive.

But at least there wasn't a Warp Core Breach.
