THE WEISS CHRONICLES

 

Ann and I received our second booster shot yesterday.

We got it at at CVS that is inside a Target.  I didn't even know this existed until I made the appointments.

It went surprisingly well. There was a designated place to sit and wait. The nurse came and got us at the appointment time and the shots were administered quickly.

Then we had our 15 minutes suggested wait time in a designated place.  Fairly short round trip (about an hour).

 

I went through a website to get a job scheduled. The job was installing a short section of wood railing.

This was on Monday 23 May, the computer scheduled the work for Tuesday 24 May beginning 7am. I agreed and thought, "wow, they must have some hungry contractors".

At 5am on Tuesday, an email was sent to me (I opened it about 630am) saying the work had to be postponed and linking me to a scheduling website. 

I called the company customer satisfaction, they answered the phone call quickly, they rescheduled the work and they gave me $10 off on the work for my trouble.

So that actual 'customer satisfaction' still happens sometimes (of course the work hasn't been done yet so we'll see).  The company is homeadvisor.  From 1998 to 2012 it was called service magic.  In 2017 they acquired Angie's List and homeadvisor became a separate company under the new umbrella ANGI Homeservices.

 Gerry Berg turned 70 in December but wanted good weather for his birthday party.

 

So he scheduled it for May 21 and reserved the rooftop lounge.  Unfortunately that day turned out to be the hottest day in May and the party was moved indoors.  I got there about 930pm.

Dave Rochlin's wife, Romona snapped a shot of David (left), Gerry and myself. I've known Gerry since about 1962 and David since about 1968. 

 

David and Romona live in Denver, CO but were in the DC area for much of May.

 

I changed the vases for this one (the vase in the May 2 post is different).

Ann and I took a round trip uber today. Everything fine except uber is requiring masks and also the place we went to (the podiatrist) requires masks also.

Both the purple and the pink/orange lilies are in the vase along with some pink roses.

 As in the past, the purple ones have a fragrance like coca cola.

 

The pink roses are also out but seemed to have ants on them.

 

There was recipe for kosher strogonoff in a publication we get.  I thought we could try it for Saturday lunch using a crock pot.

I had done cholent in the crock pot several

times and even did matzoah ball soup in the crock pot for Saturday lunch so I thought it would work. When I got busy on Thursday night I realized I was out of crock pot liners but in the past when this happened I used double 1 or 2 gallon freezer bags. So I browned the meat and the onions and the mushrooms and put them in the double bag. Then I added the garlic and two types of parve whitener and some beef fat.  I cooked the noodles separately and put them in the refrigerator overnight (this toughens the noodles enough for them to stand up to the long heating in the pot).  

I placed the noodles on top of the other products and put the bags in the crock pot and put water around the bags.

Unfortunately the bags broke (both of them), So the food was too watery to taste good.  George said the Kairaites had cursed me for having an appliance on.

 

 I had a back up with cold cuts but still I was obviously disappointed.

Next time I try this I'll either do the strogonoff in a pan for the evening meal or else be sure to have plenty of crock pot liners.

 I was on early duty at the caterer.  

 

I had finished a fairly large vegetable washing an d checking. When I put the bins of vegetables back in the walk in refrigerator I saw somebody had placed two partly empty 2

liter bottles of diet coke.  So
taking a paper cup, I poured myself a small (about8 ounce) cup. This was about 830am.

The executive chef, dislikes cola and dislikes seeing people drinking cola (he is Scottish and likes tea with milk).  He saw my cup and said to me "Breakfast of Champions".

I recalled in the early 1970s novel "Breakfast of Champions" by Kurt Vonnegut, the title came from a scene near the middle of the book (which is generally about disillusionment and mental disease),  a waitress in a bar says "Breakfast of Champions" when she serves someone a martini.

 Tamar and Oz went back to Israel.  As happened before I got a great drop off spot right near the ticket counter for Brussels Airline (which they were using) and near the cart rental place.

Oz fell asleep on the ride to the airport.

Before they left they picked some azaleas and put it in our vase.
