A Royal Pain of a Dream

I had an annoying dream Friday night (25 April).

In the dream, I had been hired by Queen Elizabeth II (who has the same birthday as I do and is in image one).

My job was to schedule events for a visit by Harry, Archie and Meghan (from left to right in image two).

The goal was to maximize the time the Queen would spend with Archie, her great grandson while avoiding all contact with Meghan during the visit.

Harry would have to cooperate but the Queen didn't care one way or the other about seeing him.

I had read something about these people recently.

more flowers

A lot of flowers are out this week.

The first image is in our back yard.

The tree with white flowers is a dogwood. About a decade ago there was a moth infestation that looked like it would wipe out all the dogwoods. However we had a wet spring and summer during the 2nd or 3rd year of the moth infestation and it led to a fungus that killed all the moths.

The many bushes with color are azaleas.

The fence is newly painted (by my neighbor).

Our vase with flowers for the sabbath has some of a white azalea.

Actually azaleas aren't ideal for this as they are a little hard to cut.

The dark flowers are the money plant.

The pink florets are from our lilac bushes.

Last Frost

When I went out to get the paper today (only half of which was delivered by the way), I noticed the front and back window of my car was frosted up as was the top.

I hope this is the last day of this.

Flowers for last two days of Passover

I didn't set out flowers for the first days of Passover.  I've found that the table has too much else on it during the sedar. That wasn't as true this year with only 3 people but even so, it was a little crowded.

Anyway, with no sedar plate, no salt water, etc. there is going to be plenty of room.

At the bottom of the display is a pink hyacinth.

Above the hyacinth and to its left are lilac florets.

Above the lilacs is a purple iris.

At the top and to the right are money plants.

Between the money plant stems are a couple of daffodils.

Giving Blood Platelets During Quarantine

I was donating platelets and plasma at the blood center today. I had to wear a face mask the whole time.  My pulse (72) and blood pressure (120/84) were pretty good despite the sheltering at home. I chose this movie because it promised good scenes from Ireland and it delivered on this (e.g., image one). Also, Amy Adams (the protagonist) is easy on the eyes.

There were actually a couple of very funny scenes. One was where Amy got some cows to leave the road so her taxi could pass (second image), after which the car rolled downhill into a river. The second was when Amy knocked over numerous room items attempting to plug in her phone (in Ireland) and then when she did it, the village electricity shorted out. A part of this scene occurs at about 1:17 in the promo for the movie.

The plot is sort of silly. Amy goes to Ireland to propose to her 4 year boyfriend but falls in love with an innkeeper (he is in the first image) who helps her get to Dublin from the coast.

The movie brought in $32 million.

Critics didn't like it (23% on Rotten Tomatoes) but audiences were more favorable (47%)

Two Recent Deaths Bring Back Memories

In the past few days Al Kaline (top image) and Bobby Mitchell died.

Between Irwin and me the following memories came back.

Once at a Sunday brunch involving my father's Bnai Brith Lodge, Bobby Mitchell, at the time a star wide receiver for the Washington Redskins, was the invited speaker.  Both my father and I asked him questions after the presentation.

Dad: To what do you attribute the growing popularity of professional football?

Mitchell: The Violence

Martin: The Redskins Team Profile says you are 5'11". Is that your real height? (he seemed only 5'9" or so)

Mitchell; That's my playing height.

After his death I read about Mitchell.  Evidently he enjoyed speaking at community functions.  People remembered him speaking to firemen, bowling leagues, etc. Apparently he was a nice guy who liked getting out and helping various communities and didn't charge much (maybe nothing) for his time.

Once at dinner discussing an upcoming series where the Senators were playing Detroit,

Dad: What the Senators need is an acidic pitcher?

Irwin and I: What's that mean?

Dad: To neutralize Al Kaline.

I'll cross post this with the long term memories blog.

Face Masks Arrive in Mail

Last week, in anticipation that the CDC would revise their policy on face masks George ordered some washable re-useable masks. Sure enough, the CDC revised their policy a few days ago.

The face masks came in the mail today.

Obviously they are not the surgical or super filter masks.

They are only a small functional improvement over the do it yourself washcloth held on by rubber bands. They do look better.

The issue of face masks for the general public is one that, per my reading, goes back to the 2002-2003 SARS pandemic.  After that event the pro face mask side was ascendant and pro face mask guidance was written for the next pandemic. The next pandemic was in 2009-2010, the H1N1 pandemic. During that time the anti face mask side was ascendant. That side was still ascendant in the US when the Coronavirus2019 developed but as of a few days ago, the pro face mask side is winning again.

Of course you should cover your nose with the face mask unlike US Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas (representing a district that includes Houston in the image).

The third image is an example of fashionable face mask use.

The mauve mask, matching her dress, is worn by the President of Slovakia, Zuzana Čaputová.

Going Batty Before Passover

Beth reported that she went out for a short walk yesterday and saw bats among the brush trees on Bialik Street (the bat in the image is on a grapefruit tree).

She said they were graceful in flight but ugly at rest.

A Walk Before the Lockdown

Ann and I went for a walk on March 30.  This was the day that the Governor announced that social distancing was going to be enforced. After this took effect, a person could go on a walk but not accompanied by another person (although you could walk with your dog). Also no driving except for essential services.

Today, the police announced that they were not planning to stop people at random and ask them where they are going. But if they stop you because you went thru a red light then you might get an additional charge.

Anyway, this image was taken on Devilwood Street near our house; note that the trees are in bloom.
