SYFY Kosher Dream

Sometimes its hard to figure out what real world events led to a specific dream.

Sometimes it is not as hard.

Last night I had a dream in which I was in charge of kosher supervision for an event of some sort.

I was in a tie and sport jacket and the guests were dressed up also.

I had checked everything but as I went around I found new bottles of ugly non kosher wine at the beverage station and I told the serving staff to take those bottles down and not use them.  Then a few minutes later I saw some milk bottles at that beverage station (it must have been a meat event because it upset me and I had to tell the servers to get those bottles out of the room).

And then a few minutes later I saw new bottles
of some sort of non kosher brandy (I think).  And the beverage people told me the new bottles were from a parallel universe.

I had been reading a few articles lately about parallel universes (first two images).

For example, this article, which reports one person's theory that our universe and parallel universes are interacting at the quantum level.

Long before this was a favorite Star Trek (TNG) episode from 1993 where Lt Worf is bedeviled by shifting universes.

In between was the episode of Star Trek (ENT) from 2005 where the Enterprise went through multiple universes (the episode was called "In a Mirror, Darkly".  The Vulcan Science officer, T'Pol, changes uniforms each time they have a new universe and her uniform gets more and more provocative (last image).

Movie Review sort of for Richard Jewell

Ann told me she wanted to see the movie "Cats" but after I looked up the critics reviews of this movie (many review suggested the movie should be dumped with used kitty litter or similar words) and read them to her she said she was open to seeing something else.

So I looked up the reviews of "Richard Jewell". They were outstanding (over 95% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes). So we saw that.

It was, IMO, a great experience. Even though the movie was over 2 hours long it didn't drag at all and there were enough odd and humorous scenes to break the awfulness of the story line (The FBI's pursuit of an investigation of an innocent man after the 1996 bombing at the Atlanta Olympics). The first image has the main actors (Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates and Paul Walter Hauser as Jewell's attorney, Jewell's mom and Jewell).

The second image has Olivia Wilde who played Kathy Scruggs. The Atlanta Journal Constitution didn't like the way the film implied (but did not show) the reporter exchanging sex for information with an FBI agent. Personally, perhaps the implication is unfair but the scene could also be considered  'an effective flirt' so I don't see how this is an enormous deal.

Anyway there were two things I didn't like. In the movie there is a scene of many people doing the Macarena. Also, there is really no climax to the movie. The latter problem is because in real life the investigation ended in anticlimax as, after several months the FBI sent Jewell a letter saying he was no longer a suspect and then several months later making it public and then six years later the actual bomber confessed.

Interestingly, Richard Jewell, who sued and settled with a number of media companies, including NBC was actually on SNL (an NBC affiliate) where they jokingly asked him if he knew anything about Princess Diana's death. The video of that is here.

Tom Brokow evidently watched the movie (which includes a clip from his TV report which said the FBI had enough to indict but not enough to convict Jewell). Brokow tweeted this.

Another interesting factoid is that after Jewell had been made a suspect, Jay Leno (with NBC) joked that Jewell looked a lot like the hitman hired by Tanya Harding's boyfriend in 1994 (he injured Nancy Kerrigan). In the 2017 movie about Tanya Harding, Hauser played the part of Harding's hitman.

The results of an over engineered solution

Our Hanukkah menorahs built up considerable wax over the years making the insertion of candles something of a chore.

The wax also became somewhat unsightly on the
bottom of the aluminum pan in which we to keep the menorahs.

While Ann and I were at the Gym, George decided to melt the wax out of the menorahs. He put the aluminum pan with the menorahs in the oven and put it on 'Self Clean'.

All the wax was gone at the end of the self clean cycle. However, also two of the menorahs melted. One fell apart as it melted (the darker material in image 1), one melted into interesting shapes (which could be modern art but we disposed of them). Three of the menorahs survived more less completely (minor discoloration).  The house smelled of smoke for a while also.

It reminded me of the over-engineered solutions that Wile E Coyote used to try to catch Road Runner (image 2).

Winter Wasps in the Kitchen

The past 4 weeks I've seen a wasp on the floor. Three of them were in the kitchen (where the floor is relatively light and there is lots of lighting - so I may have missed a few). The wasp in the image on the left was on the kitchen floor today. My glasses show the scale.

This is the first year we've had this problem. It is especially annoying since today's wasp somehow survived a brutally cold day (morning was in the teens and it didn't get above the low 30sF).

Per my reading, wasps are good at hiding between sliding glass doors and are also good at making nests near crevices.

I can't do much about the sliding doors but I'll have to start looking for crevices.

Benefit of the Extended Warranty

Some time ago George bought a Smart Car, a Fortwo, used from Car Max.

He got the extended warranty which guarantees a loaner when your car is being serviced.

The service he needed was too complex for the Car Max shop and had to be sent to a Mercedes dealer. This is because the Fortwo is made by a Mercedes company.

So George got a Mercedes as a loaner (pictures are from George's Facebook).

The Smart Car was purchased in June 2017 and was discussed in a post on this blog in that month

Yet Another Dream

I get memorable dreams in the early winter sometimes. Perhaps this is because several of the scriptural
portions read during this time are about dreams.

Anyway, my dream last night seemed to be premised on my having invented, or possibly purchased the rights to, an adjustable drill (first image shows such a device).

In the dream, a number of University Administrators had invited me to their campus to, I think, negotiate the sale of the patent or possibly technical advise on a better version of the adjustable drill.

Somehow, they must have been offering a nice price or possibly prestige because I remember being very happy at the attention.

pink bears at the drug store

A few nights ago we went to the drug store.

There was a display of pink bears.  It had something to do with medicine for poor children but Ann really liked the pink bears.

BTW, there is no curb cut near the drug store.

Every time I buy something there and they send me a 'rate your experience' email link to a survey I comment about the curb cut.

Another Dream

This was a dream from Friday Night.

In the dream I was in charge of security (and possibly also Kashrut) for Luciano Pavarotti (who died in 2007).

I was supervising a crew of people who had various hardware, possibly guns and scopes.

We were also putting markings on the floor for where Pavarotti would stand at some sort of performance or speech or awards ceremony.

Then another group of security people came into the area. They said that they were pre screening the area for an appearance by Joe Biden.  I was upset and asked to talk to their security manager.

They laughed.

Then I woke up, still upset.

Jack Frost and His Snowflakes

  • Back in the late 1980s George was in a school musical play.
He had the part of Jack Frost in a musical about growing vegetables (the image is from a 1966 ad for a movie).

Anyway, we now have that 1980s play up on youtube (thanks to George).

    It is available here..

Back to Donating Platelets and Plasma

I am again eligible to give platelets and plasma. I lost that eligibility by taking a medication called dutasteride but I stopped taking that about 7 months ago.

Yesterday I gave plasma and platelets. I watched the movie "Battleship" which is about a WWII vessel that destroys alien invaders who have interstellar technology. There is a lot of good action but obviously the plot is stupid and hackneyed. Brooklyn Decker (left standing on the platform) is nice to look at and not a terrible actress although her part is tangential to the main plot. The film was heavily promoted but only made $65M in the U.S. Critics hated it and filmgoers didn't like it much either (33 and 53 on RottenTomatoes respectively).
