Anti Vaxxer 'outreach'

Tamar went for a walk from our House to the nearest Harris-Teeter Grocery.

During the in-store portion of the trip she used the store rest room to change Oz.

While changing Oz, a woman gave her unsolicited advise to go slow on vaccinations.

This probably goes on at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's also I presume.

The image is from an anti-Vax rally in 1919 (on about the centennial of the event). One of the signs seems to blame vaccinations on Germany.

A Memory Re-Tasted

In 1964, the World's Fair was in New York City.

Our family went to it.

I remember a few things
about this.

1. There were a lot of tolls to pay on the drive to and from (there still are, although one may pay electronically).

2. There were some concept exhibits like 'house of the future', 'car of the future', 'phone of the future'.

3. There was the Unisphere, which is still there in Flushing Meadows. It currently looks like image one which is from the Wikipedia article on the Unisphere. In 1964 it looked like image two (also from the Wikipedia article).  The Unisphere has been used in movies, e.g., "Men in Black".

4. It was hot at the World's Fair that year and there was a drought in the North East. When we went to a restaurant we had to order water or they wouldn't bring it.  Between meals we had something called "Italian Ices".

I remember this all yesterday because I bought some Italian Ices (yes they are kosher and parve) per Beth's request.

I vaguely remember that back in 1964 they tasted OK but not spectacular.  This year I think they were pretty good but not spectacular.

The Diversity of Socks

I found these socks in the drawer yesterday. I was in a hurry and I grabbed a pair to put in my gym bag and wear after exercising.

I had assumed they would be ordinary socks but they weren't.

They might be leg warmers or might have been a sock with bare toes for people who are prone to fungus.

I looked this up on the internet when I got home and socks have recently become more diverse. There are socks like these with holes for the toes and also socks with toe portions like gloves.

Oz at Nationals Park

Tamara and Oz and I all went to National's Park today for the Washington-Atlanta game which Washington won 7-0. Washington hit into 4 double plays which I don't think I've ever seen before.

Oz got a First Game Certificate from Guest Services and a baseball hat (it says Nationals in hebrew script) from the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, who were one of the sponsors of the event. This is an annual event. Last year George and I went.

We got sky box seats along the third base line. We also had free food and drinks and closed circuit, no advertisement TV.

People were nice too. We used uber both ways for transportation.

People at the Restaurant want to hold Oz

Tamar and Oz went to Siena yesterday. I was doing Mashgiach work there.

Tamar wanted to do some shopping at a store in the same area.

Oz got some attention.

The first image is Farid Zadeh with Oz. Farid is part of the family that owns the Siena restaurant.

The second image is Oz with Sharon Freundel. Sharon is a former teacher of Tamar and has been doing Jewish education work in the DC/Rockville/Silver Spring area for several decades.

She is now a director of an education innovation institute but also does some guest teaching at various places.

The third image is Oz with a woman who comes to the Restaurant a lot but I don't remember her name.

This woman later in the day had a guest join her. The guest brought some kosher dairy yogurt into the  Restaurant. I had to tell her not to do it again and that the Restaurant is not just kosher but cholev yisroel. This means the milk used in products was produced under full kosher real time supervision, not just kosher approval and intermittent inspection. I haven't seen any yogurt locally that is cholev yisroel.  In fact the logistics chain of supplies of fresh cholev yisroel products, e.g., milk, is not very reliable and has caused trouble. However, it is easy to get cholev yisroel cheese (although there is a price penalty compared to cheese that is not cholev yisroel.

Another Coffee First Crowd

I was on Mashgiach duty this morning for an event (a baby naming).  The caterer had prepared all kinds of wonderful things to eat including crepes, omelet inside croissants, bagels, vegetables, cheese cubes and pastries.   There were about 80 people in attendance.  Within about 10 minutes of the start of the event (just after a 730 start time shacharit), the 100 cup size urn of coffee (probably not originally filled to capacity) had been drained but most of the food was barely started.

Personally, I like to get the food before the coffee unless I am sitting at a table (in which case I get the coffee and place it on the table and then go back for food. This is because I find it is harder to hold the coffee while getting, say, pastries, then holding the pastries while getting coffee. But I guess most people go the other way.

This is the 3rd event I can remember that something like this occurred.  At one of these events there was made-to-order omelets and people got coffee and sipped it while waiting for the omelets to be made. This actually made sense but this time I didn't get it.

Post Trip Cell Phone Issues

We still have some catching up to do on this.

Ann's cell phone needed a new battery.

My cell phone wasn't completely un-forwarded (the forward was done when we went to Israel so a person calling my American number would be forwarded to my Israel number). Then there was a problem with the battery, then a problem caused by the installation of the new battery.

Beth's cell phone didn't get the American sim card installed.

Uh.

(update - all these were fixed by the end of 9 Sept)

Happy 40th to Tamar

An Oreo Ice Cream Cake to Celebrate the occasion at lunch (and we had take out for dinner).

And tomorrow, Ann will be at work (by 630am), I will be at work (but only for a few hours), George will be at work (but at home mostly).

Beth will take care of Oz.

Home From Isreal

We got home yesterday 3 September pretty early, about 800am.

Beth got a seat on the family room couch and lay down with Oz.  Actually Oz slept pretty well on the plane flight but probably the long haul
from the gate through security and passport control and getting ground transportation tired him out again (as it did me, Ann and Beth).

A few minutes after we got in, Trina cat came in and lay down on Beth. Trina also brushed her head against Oz.

So, within a few minutes of getting in, Oz became an 'honorary cat' (through the transfer of cat pheromones).

Of course the cat also wants attention when I am holding Oz (second image). One of Oz's favorite things is standing on my stomach.

Good Food Ugly Atrium

Within about 200' from where Tamar lives is a restaurant.

It is next to a tunnel which connects Bialik Street with Shilo Street. The tunnel goes under a building which has commercial activity on the ground floor and apartments above.

The restaurant serves pizza (second image) and various other things (cheesecake, beer, pasta, salads). The food is pretty good. We ate there Sunday 1 September.

However, the atrium (first image) near where you are eating is one of the ugliest I've ever seen (and they frequently have wet spots in the summer on the pavement as air conditioning systems are operating and water overflows from whatever evaporating container that is supposed to hold it.

The image doesn't do the ugliness justice but you can get a taste of it by clicking on the image to expand it.

The Russian Influence in Ramat Gan

There are a lot of ethnic Russians in Israel and in Ramat Gan.

Today, our final one in Israel this trip, I went to Rambam Square to get the American Sim cards placed into our (Ann and My) cell phones in place of the Israel sim cards.

I went to a shop that Beth uses a lot. She had told me that a guy named "Igor" is especially helpful there.

I went in and asked a guy at the counter, "Are you Igor".

The counter guy said, "Kaine" (yes in Hebrew).

I said that my daughter is Tamar and perhaps you know her.

The counter guy said, "Here there are three Igors".

The image is a famous Igor, namely, Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky (1882-1971).

Why is this Bar Mitzvah different from All other...

The image on the left is a Bar Mitzvah from 2008 (I didn't attend that one).

Where I was there was a Bar mitzvah today. The kid was a cohen and there were no other cohanim.

He didn't do the priestly blessing during shacharit but then he had an aliyah during the Torah reading.  So after his aliyah, apparently, he became eligible to do the priestly blessing.

During repetition of the amidah during mussaf, he went up and gave the priestly blessing to the minyan.

It was weird as at least 50% of the minyan are senior citizens.

Also, there was no kiddush. There was some whiskey and crackers available but that is pretty standard at this minyan.
