Now we think we know what pipe leaks

This reports on an event that began on July 21 or so.

We cut away a piece of the ceiling in the kitchen.

That's what the image shows.

The middle of the section has a large pipe and the pipe was wet at the joint.

However that wasn't the leak.

The actual leak is upstream (that is to the left on the picture), although we are  pretty sure it is that pipe.

Annual Giant Lily Picture

A lot of the lilies have bloomed already.

However, one of the tallest of  them is still producing flowers.

That is me in back of the lilies.

We had a lot of damage from deer eating the flowers this year despite multiple applications of deer repellant (both liquid and  pellets).

In back of me is one of our crape myrtle trees which is also in bloom.

To my left are some smaller lilies.

Shower Leaks, then fixes itself

We had a major leak into our kitchen from the ceiling.

We are pretty sure it was from one of the pipes serving the hall shower based on when the leak happened.

We had a plumber come out but by the time he got here the leak had stopped. Not only that, but the pipes that are visible from the access door in the hallway were all dry.

He turned on every possible water using value in both the hall and the master bathroom and couldn't generate a leak.

The diagnostic work was $87 and can be applied to the cost of a major fix if the leak appears in the next 30 days and proves itself fixable. For now, we had some buckets and pots on standby near the kitchen.

A Self Referential Movie

Today was another platelet donation day.  The blood center had new movie monitors which were a notable improvement on the old ones.

I watched the 2007 movie "I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With". The actor Jeff Garlin wrote, produced, directed and starred in this romantic comedy.

Garlin plays a semi-lovable overweight loser who is a part time actor in Chicago. He hears that a movie company is remaking "Marty" and wants to star in it because he feels he is perfect for the starring role. This makes sense for two reasons: 1. the movie Marty (1955) starred Ernest Borgnine who bears a resemblance to Garlin; and 2. the movie (based on the play) "Marty" resembles his own life in the movie "I Want".  In "Marty" Borgnine plays a loser whose family wants him to better himself.  In both "I Want ..." and "Marty", the star is attracted to a school teacher.

There are some differences of course in the two movies. In "I Want ..." Garlin and the teacher never actually date and instead, Garlin dates a woman he met at an ice cream store. In "Marty", they date, break up and the movie ends with Borgnine calling the teacher to get back together.
Also, "Marty" was not a comedy.

In the second image, the brunette is Sarah Silverman with whom Garlin actually dates and the blond is Bonnie Hunt the teacher to whom he is attracted (and is attracted to him).

The third image shows a still from the movie "Marty" of Borgnine and Betsy Blair (the teacher).

"I Want..." made about $140,000 at the box office (perhaps people were offended that the title ends with a preposition).

At its peak, it was only shown in 14 theaters.

It did get good reviews and was also a pay for view cable and DVD, etc. so total revenue was undoubtedly over $1M.

I found it mildly amusing but wouldn't recommend it unless you liked "Marty" and want to see a tribute to it.

Deluge Rain breaks a drought

We had a heavy rain for an hour or so today. So far (as of 5pm), it hasn't postponed tonight's All Star game (PS: and it did not). We did need the rain as we have had almost no rain since late June and with the summer sun, the ground has been drying out fast.

The image, was taken by Nancy Bateman and shows vehicles pulling off the road on the GW Parkway (which parallels the Potomac River in Virginia from the Beltway to Mount Vernon, VA).

National Airport recorded about 2.5" in only 40 minutes. BWI had over 3" in 2 hours. National's Park (where the game was played) got about 1.5".

This plus an email earlier today got me thinking of another heavy rain on an All Star game night in 1969. I posted those thoughts in the Long Term Memories blog.

Museum of the Bible - Really is world class

Ann and I went to the Museum of the Bible today (first image). We got there about 1130am and left at about 500pm when the museum was about to close.

It was that good.

The museum in housed in a building that was once a Refrigeration Warehouse for rail freight. Once refrigerated RR train cars became common, the building lost its purpose. The building was converted into a museum between 2012 when it was purchased and November 2017 when it opened.

One of the signature exhibits is a 30 minute walk thru the stories of the Hebrew bible with films, sound and lighting. During this walk, one of the experiences is a walk through the sea of Reeds (second image).

There are hundreds of important artifacts worth seeing, including ancient Torah scrolls and documents from the Cairo geniza and relics from the first temple period.

However, the thing that impressed me the most was the elevators. Each elevator had three large monitors showing high definition 3D time lapse scenes from various sites in Israel or near Israel.

Way Back Machine for 1986

George noticed a problem in the Weiss Chronologies.

The problem was that several years were missing from this website.

I did have old .doc files in the hard drive of one of our computers so these files were copied.

The copies were place in a separate blog for the pre 2003 years. It is here.

First Social Security Deposit

Ann and I applied for Social Security payments on July 3.  We went to the office in downtown Rockville because our on line accounts had been frozen for some reason.

I opted to apply retroactively to January and the retroactive payment hit my account today.

My regular monthly payment and Ann's will probably hit between the 15th and 30th.

No Diminishing Returns to Scale??

After the Coke purchase noted below and another one (using another Extra Bucks Coupon) later that day, there is an enormous pile of Diet Coke cartons in our sun room.

I told George that I'm waiting for him to say, "No... More...Coke...".

He responded, "That won't happen".

Seemed to Be a Great Deal

I went to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription. Because of various insurance provisions, my cost for a 30 day supply of a painkiller was $0.31. My receipt with the purchase included a $6.00 extra buck coupon which I used a few minutes later to buy 12 packs of Coke (which itself was on sale).

That seems like a truly great deal. George, who has been on the CVS website, says that the $6 coupon was my reward for June purchases and I would have gotten it with my first July purchase no matter if I had spent 31 cents or, say, $310.
