Clouds obscure our super blue blood moon 

I got up before 6am and was outside by 615am for the Super Blue Blood Moon. It was pretty cold, about 20F.

Unfortunately, some clouds were on the horizon and obscured the view.

Jim Havard posted this image on twitter and it was resident on the weather gang site.

Super = bigger than normal
Blue = second full moon of the month
Blood = in the penumbra of a lunar eclipse

Why did we lend the hotel our banquet table? 

I had an annoying dream last night.  Somehow we had lent a banquet table to a hotel (or convention center or corporate HQ).

I had to pick it up. I wondered through the hotel and got the banquet table but couldn't find my way back to where I entered the hotel and just before I woke up, I found myself carrying the banquet table through an indoor pool area where people were looking at me like I was a banquet table thief.

End of a Bottle from the 1990s 

When my mother was staying with us back in the late 1990s, we bought a bottle of Sanka. She liked this product but didn't like too much of it in her hot drinks as we mixed it with freeze dry coffee to reduce the caffeine load.

The product may not be that great tasting but it does last.  On very cold mornings, I have used some of the Sanka to flavor my hot chocolate.

Today was a very cold morning (about 14F) and I used the last of that bottle.

Second and Last Day of super warmth 

We have had two nice warm days. Yesterday, the high was near 60F and today 70F.



When you get warm humid air over solid ice, you get fog and that's what is happening in the image taken by Margot Beezley (posted by the weather gang).

In the foreground of the first image is Virginia. In the background is the Georgetown riverfront. 

The island on the right is Theodore Roosevelt Island, which is nice place to visit in the fall if it has been dry (because after a rain event, the island is full of bogs).


The second image is the Virginia side of the Memorial Bridge and was taken by John Soderman and also posted on the weather gang site. 

The fourth image is of the Washington Monument. 

It was taken from the west side of the Tidal  Basin.

Post script: We had a strong cold front come in overnight and the evening of 13 January the temperature is back in the low 20sF

Last Day of the Big Freeze 

 It got below 0F today (Jan 7) at Dulles International Airport and to +1F at BWI.
Dulles yesterday (Jan 6) recorded its 11th day with no temperature readings above freezing which is a record, although not a long term one since the airport only opened in 1963.  BWI, which opened in 1950 (as Friendship Airport), has also not seen (as of the end of Jan 6) 33F for 11 days (both places also got a 12th day in today). Postscript: on Jan 8, the temperature only got to 33F at Dulles and 34F at BWI and in the evening of Jan 8 we had some freezing rain and in the am of Jan 9, we had freezing fog.

The thermometer I can see out my family room window, was at about 5F earlier this morning.  
Some of the days during this 11 day freeze (update: today made the 12th day of below 33F of which 7 days were below 26F) have had biting wind along with the cold.

The first image is from Kevin Ambrose who posted it on the weather gang site of the Washington Post. It shows Great Falls, Virginia on December 30.

The second image shows (per the notes on the map), ice concentration on Lake Erie on January 7, 2016.

The third image shows the same information but for January 7, 2018.

I used Lake Erie because, even though it is the furthest south of the Great Lakes, it typically freezes first because it is relatively shallow compared to the other of the Great Lakes. 

The fourth image shows the tidal gage at the mouth of the Patapsco River where it empties into Baltimore Harbor. 

It shows that as the deepening January 4 storm (a.k.a.,'Grayson' as called by the Weather Channel) passed by, it resulted in a tide that was 4 feet below average.  This is apparently, the lowest tide recorded in about 30 years at this point.
