Earthquake Today 

Per the USGS, there was a magnitude 4.1 or so earthquake today with its center near Dover, Delaware a bit before 5pm EST.

George noticed it. He was upstairs. I didn't as I was downstairs. As of now there are no reports of deaths or injuries.

Fun Movie at Blood Donation 

 I went to the blood donation center today.  My appointment was a 730am and, being thanksgiving, there was plenty of parking available and very light traffic.

The movie I selected was "All About Steve".  Critics hated it. It got only a 7% rating from the critics part of Rotten Tomatoes.  It did fairly well however at the box office with revenue of about $40M.

The critics have their own 'anti academy awards' and there the film got multiple Razzie for worst film, director, actress, etc.  Time Magazine rated it among the worst 'chick flicks' of all time.

Sandra Bullock ending up winning an academy award the day after the Razzies that year (2010) for best actress in "The Blind Side" (which I have not seen).

I found the movie delightful. Bullock plays a crossword puzzle creator who falls in love and then stalks a TV cameraman (named Steve). She comes from a mixed marriage as her name in Mary Magdalene Horowitz.

So it is a rom-com with almost no 'rom' but lots and lots of com.  It makes fun of romance, the news business and the 1979 Gremlin (auto) also. The first image is the flagship poster. The second image is when Sandra Bullock accepted the Razzie in person.

Behind the Stove 

Over the years we've have a number of invasion of sweet gum ants (no image of the ants as they are too yucky). 

We use an insect control service. 

We also use various insecticides, e.g., a boric acid base powder and 
Terro. 

Today, George and I (at George's initiative) degreased the area under the stove and on the various other surfaces nearby. 


The final product was not as clean as the one in the image but we hope it will augment our anti ant efforts.

Peace Thru Fries - the dream 

 I was dreaming last night.

In the dream I was at the United Nations and some important vote was taking place. I approached a delegation, I think the Portuguese, and told them that if they voted the right way, I would get them some french fries. They did.

In the next scene I was at the outdoor portion of a fast food restaurant getting the delegation their fries. 

All of sudden, a monster appeared in the air flying toward the restaurant (that image is from the movie "Kill all Monsters" and his name is Varen).  I tossed some fries in the air and the monster grabbed them and flew away.

Then I woke up.

Synchonize Your Hearing Aid Removal 

I was doing mashgiach work last night. It was at a nice venue in Bethesda. It was a bar mitzvah party.

At one point the party MC told all the kids to cheer for the bar mitzvah guy. As the cheering continued I removed my hearing aid as it was getting uncomfortably loud and I noticed that two other adults about my age were doing the same.

First Hard Freeze 

We had a really cold night. My outside thermometer had the temperature about 22F. Various other sites in the area were similar. National Airport bottomed out at 26F.

The early morning walk was along grass covered with heavy frost (image from http://tomlinsonbomberger.com a lawn care company). 

A few days earlier a heavy frost had occurred in the Shenandoah Valley to our west. 


The second image was taken the morning of Nov 8 by Tyler Reber and sent to the weather gang at the Washington Post.

Return from Overseas - unpleasant surprise 

We returned from extended travel in Spain, Gibraltar and Portugal (the blog for that trip is here).

Our flight landed on time at Dulles Airport and we went through passport and customs pretty quickly.

However we got an unpleasant surprise from supper shuttle. They no longer have a counter and lounge in the airport itself. You have to go outside and find them and then they get you a shuttle.  It was in the low 40s at the time we got back.  Fortunately, we got a vehicle pretty quickly.
