An Increment of Savings 

George's digital thermometer wasn't working. 

Another person would have simply bought a replacement (about $12). 

George did the next step and removed the battery that powers the thermometer.

Then he bought a new battery on the internet (about $1 including postage).

This Year's Passover Flowers 

Before Passover, I went into the yard and picked some purple flowers and put them in a vase (on the left of the image).

The purple color was in memory of Prince. I had some lilacs blooming and some money plants blooming. It's five days later and they are somewhat worse for wear but still identifiable. 

The one on the right was a gift from Diane White who was a guest at our first Seder.  It is still in very good shape.

An $800 Check that Won't be Cashed 

In the mail recently, was an $800 check for Peter J Weiss (my father).



He died about 25 years ago. 


The check was only good if he bought hearing equipment.



Bonus: the envelope had a notation of "Dated Material - Open Immediately".



Somehow, I think my father would have been mildly amused by this.

Strange Lineup at National's Park 

I was at the Nationals game against the Phillies with Howard Foreman. This was courtesy of Stanley Cohen. The Phillies won 4-3 with Scherzer giving up a 2 run HR in the first.

The Nationals were giving away cling Teddy Roosevelt dolls (first image)
  The Phillies mostly pitched around Harper by walking him 3 times.

Among the highlights was a nice head's up play by Rendon at third base with runners on first and third. Rendon fielded a hard hit ball, tagged the runner near him and fired to first to get the batter.


The Phillies used a lineup in which the pitcher was batting 8th. The lineup image is from a game a few days ago in which the Phillies started doing this.


Apparently the Chicago Cubs have done this a number of times in the past two seasons. 


Also, back in 1979, the Phillies had Steve Carlton bat 8th for some reason.

Beth's Visit 

Beth Arrived on April 12 for a two week visit. She will depart April 26. 

She got here via a three leg flight; Tel Aviv to Brussels to Newark, NJ to BWI. 

One of the interesting things that happened was because she arrived with stopped up ears which, by the 16th still hadn't completely cleared.

On the 16th, she went to the CVS minute clinic, a few blocks from our house. After a brief consultation with a practical nurse, the nurse concluded that there was nothing wrong and the ear would clear by itself. Then something amazing happened. The practical nurse said, "no charge". 

As it turns out, a few days later her throat hurt again. So she went to Patient First and they did a culture, diagnosed strep throat and prescribed antibiotic.  After a few days the throat stopped hurting

We got another stuffed animal while Beth was here. It is a parent and child platypus. The story is on the stuffed animal blog.

One day while Beth was here we met Irwin for lunch.  

The image was taken near the Pastry Oven in Kemp Mill.  I took the picture (George on right). 

The azaleas got very showy during this visit. 

The fourth image is Beth and George in a neighbor's yard.

The last image is Beth and Mrs Kessler our neighbor. 

 
Mrs Kessler took the picture of the 4 Weisses.


They were taken in her backyard (made it convenient for her). 

Beth returned to Israel BWI, to Newark,NJ to Brussels to Tel Aviv route on April 26-28 (it took an extra day because of a problem with the plumbing area of the plane before it took off from Newark.  She missed a connection in Brussels and spent 9 hours at that airport.

An Award that says Little 

I was buying some matzoh for Passover. 

One variety was $1.99 for 5 pounds. The packaging contained the information that this matzoh (Yehuda - made in Israel) was rated #1 in taste by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Since matzoh is pretty tasteless, this is quite an achievement.

Does Crab Meat Look Like Asparagus 

 We had a shipment come in today for the kosher caterer. 

The shipment was from a company that usually does good work.

On our shipping list was asparagus.

Instead of asparagus, they sent some fresh crab meat.

Do these two items look alike?

Also, a few days ago I was supervising production of broccoli kugal for Passover -- they made huge vats of broccoli, other huge vats of onions, a huge container of whole eggs and mixed them in container after container. 

They then placed the mixture in pan after pan after pan after pan, put the pans on trays and put the trays in the ovens. They probably made 200 kugals in the 4 hours I was there. 

They used a non kosher for passover scale to weigh the pans (pre baking) to see if they were within limits. They used a see-thru cellophane bag to keep the surface of the scale off the pan while the pan was being weighed.

Italian Music Concert 

Ann and I went to the concert advertised in the image.

It was quite good. There was one arrangement that was too difficult for the choir to do well but the other dozen or so pieces were nice and some were really wonderful.

The venue, Ohr Kodesh's main sanctuary, has seating for somewhere between 500 and 1000 and the room was packed pretty well with 90%+ of the seats taken. Image two shows the front of the sanctuary. 

I particularly liked one piece that has a soloist singing short phrases and then the chorus responding with an extended "Amen song". Its at the 1:20 minute mark in this youtube video. The video was made at a rehearsal but the music is the same as at the concert.
