Senaca Lake State Park Winter Lights 

The State of Maryland has some parks within Montgomery County. 

One of these is Seneca Lake park and for some years they have had a winter lights festival. For $12, you drive through a 2 or 3 mile loop lit up with a variety of designs. 

We went there tonight.

It was very nice this  year and we stayed warm in the car while looking at the lights.

Las Vegas Vacation Dec 20-24 

We went to Las Vegas for a late December get away.

It wasn't an escape from the weather because that week Las Vegas was actually cooler than the DC area but it was fun.

This is an image of Ann at the backside (downstream) side of the Hoover Dam which is just a bit east of Las Vegas (you typically fly over it on the way to the Las Vegas airport if you are coming from the east).

A Deep Suggestion from Linkedin 

Today, Linkedin sent me an email suggesting that I connect with someone. Then when I went to the connect subsite, they suggested that I invite John Lindsey, Bignumber10@hotmail.com, to join Linkedin. 

John died in 2008. 

Apparently, Linkedin dived deep into my email to pick this one out.

I still receive occasional USPS mail for my mother (died in 2001) and father (died 1990).

Beth Moves Down in Frequency 

Beth is in a choir. She was one of the Mezzo Sopranos. One day she felt her throat hurt after practice. She went to the director of the choir (the girl friend of the conductor).  After a time, the director said, "You know what - you are an alto". So now she sings alto and her throat doesn't hurt. (btw, I don't understand the image which implies that amateur mezzo sopranos and baritones don't exist but its from a website about how hard it is to find Tenors).

She had another story that happened about the same time. She was playing an Israeli board game (somewhat like checkers) with a guy. After a time he said, "Are you a Gemini?"  

She responded, "No, I'm a Virgo and I don't believe in astrology."

"Most Virgos are like that." he stated.

Cherry Blossom Trees Start to flower (december) 

Cherry blossom trees usually flower in March or April around here.


This December we've had a string of very warm days with maximum temperatures in the 60sF (one day over 70F).  Some of the cherry blossom trees have responded by putting out flowers. 


The local community of tree authorities is of the opinion that this will not harm the trees but too much winter blooming will lessen the next spring blooming. 



The picture above (from the WTOP website) is of a tree downtown. None of the ones on our street are blooming last I checked.

Big Menorah Two Doors Away 

The property two houses east of us (I think at 8203 but I have to check this) was purchased in June 2015.  

 I spoke to the owner today. He is Igor Benovitch (not sure of last name - he has a strong Russian accent).  Sometime ago (I think in August), I spoke to his wife and kids.

Igor put up a big menorah this year (shown in image - the pick up truck is his also).  He started the illumination a few days ago (before Hanukkah). I asked if he had joined a synagogue yet and he said he was checking them out and would probably make a decision next year.

He is a contract engineer and made the menorah himself from PVC pipe and colored it to look like metal. He says it weighs only about 50 pounds.

does better vodka cost less 

I was on mashgiach duty at an event in which the client supplied the alcohol products and thus I was inspecting them closely. I noticed that this client, who had in the past used Grey Goose vodka had switched brands to Tito's.  


From a Kashrus point of view, it was a wash as both are kosher (the unflavored products that is).


I wondered how it went over with the guests. I asked a few and they seemed to like the new brand. 


The next day I went to the liquor store and purchased the Tito's. When I got home, I had some. Yes it was good (no burn, no formaldehyde taste). It was also less expensive than Grey Goose.
