Plasma donation issue today

Today was plasma and platelet donation day for me.

I had ice cream for an early breakfast, then had some chocolate for a snack, then a bagel with extra butter for a second snack before arriving at the Red Cross donation center at about 10:30 am.

I had those foods partly to improve my calcium since the donation process doesn't go well with low calcium.

However, after I had been in the donation process an hour or so, a series of chimes went off at the station holding my donated material. It turned out that my Cholesterol was high and was clogging the filter in the machine and turning the liquid extra yellow (yellow stuff in the image is supposed to be cholesterol).

Ooops.

They told me to drink milk (cow, soy, almond or cashew) next time and skip the butter.

Btw, current thinking is that butter increases HDL (good), rather than LDL(bad) - second image.

Trifecta at the Milwaukee Museum of Art Aug 23

The first image (taken by Gerry) is the vaulted ceiling of the museum of Art in Milwaukee. We went there to see a first time shown collection of modern art from Van Gogh to Pollock (actually it went on beyond Pollock).

The second image, taken by an anonymous stranger by request of Gerry, is, from left to right, Glenn Kruser, Gerry Berg and me. with Lake Michigan in the background (the very light blue water and the light (but not that light) blue sky.

At the museum we got in for free since Glenn had his military ID with him and it was some special deal. I also got to use an audio tour machine for free thanks to a friendly anonymous visitor.

Later at the Bier Garten we all got free beer (although all of us had paid for at least one beer by then).

M in Wisconsin for Schafkopf Aug 20-24

M was in Wisconsin for one of the Sheepshead (that Schafkopf in German) and sightseeing trips that has, since about 1998 or so been a once-a-year event.

Gerry Berg took the first picture and Gerry got an anonymous stranger to take the other two pictures.

The first image is at Estabrook Park Bier Garten (Beer Garden in English) which is on the north side of Milwaukee. On the left side of the table (front to back) is Glenn Kruser, Jim Bartos and John Carleton. On the right side (front to back) is Darlene Eisenhut, Steve Eisenhut, myself and Dirk Jansen.

We actually got free beer at this place.

The second image is from the Red Rock Saloon in Madison, Wisconsin.

The next image is from Monona Terrace in Madison.

Rick Rosen was with us some also and did play sheepshead, but did not get in one of those pictures. Also I visited with a friend from the Navy Reserve, Bob Aune.

And, yes, we did play many hands of sheepshead, both in Madison and Milwaukee.

Irate Caller with strange complaint

I got home from work duty today about 930pm. About 2 minutes after I got in our land line rang. For some reason I picked it up and the person on the other end of the phone criticized me for using strong language to his wife while complaining about their lawn.

He didn't seem to believe me when I said I didn't know what he was talking about and said his voice ID had indicated that this was the number from which the 'bad lawn criticism' had come.

Another reason to let the voicemail get the call.

Road trip to the Northeast

From Aug 9 to Aug 13, Ann and I went on a 1000 mile 7 destination trip. Destinations were in PA, NJ and NY.

The image above is from the back of a welcome center and rest stop in PA just south of the NY border on US-15 (which will eventually become I-99).

Things we Remember

A few days ago I was at synagogue and we were waiting until we had a minyan for the weekday afternoon service.

One of the attendees was on his smart phone and asked me if I knew the password for the synagogue WIFI system.

Amazingly, I actually remembered the password.

I had used it a few months earlier while doing mashgiach work for an event at the synagogue and used it a few months before that for a similar event and I remember asking for the password so I could look up the kashrut status of a product.

Lillies look like picture

The first image is one of a marquetry picture of Lilly flowers.

It was done by the late Oskar Schreiner who married the sister of a cousin of my father (at least that's what I remember).

The next image is of some late blooming (yes in August) Lilly flowers in my front yard.

I have several other tall lillies. Most of them, have however, lost their flowers. Some have previously bloomed and some, regrettably have had flower bulbs chewed off by deer).

Obviously the various species or sub species have different bloom times.
