Potomac 18 was making chocolate mousse mini pies today - 1000+ of them. The recipe requires both whole eggs and egg yolks (so the mix is about 75% yolk).

Without equipment, the standard way to get the yolk is to drain the white by moving the yolk from side to side in the unbroken egg half shells (first image). The whites are put in one container (egg whites are used for meringue for example), the yolks in another container.

Thankfully, Glenview Farms makes a kosher egg yolk product that comes in refrigerated cartons (looks a bit like a milk carton). They also make a whole egg liquid and a egg white liquid (both kosher).

I can crack, check and containerize about 300 whole eggs in about one hour but separating the yolks and whites in 300 eggs and containerizing them would certainly take over 5 hours and probably closer to 8 hours.

Some Senior Benefits

I used my senior smartcard today for several trips.

For example, the metrorail fare from Chinatown to White Flint was $2.40 instead of the $4.80 it would have been.

The ride on fare from White Flint to my street was $0.35 instead of the $1.10 it would have been.

Even $0.35 is higher than the $0.15 that Charlie had to pay

(of course that song was first recorded in 1949 when $0.15 was, as they say, a real piece of change - the famous version by the Kingston Trio is an update from 1959),

"...Charlie handed in his dime at the Kendall Square station

And he changed for Jamaica Plain

When he got there the conductor told him, 'One more nickel'

Charlie couldn't get off of that train..."

Superwasp invades

We had a super sized wasp invade the house tonight about 930pm.

The image shows the wasp (dead or dying) next to a nickel.

The wasp of course looked bigger when flying around, partly because it was not curled up.

It took several direct hits with a piece of cardboard to disable it.

Jhonny Peralta is key component in first 4-5-4 triple play

The Pittsburgh Pirates pulled off a 4-5-4 triple play against the St Louis Cardinals. This was the first such triple play in major league recorded history. One reason is that triple plays are themselves unusual. However the more embarrassing (for Jhonny Peralta - who is otherwise a pretty good player) reason is that he was the runner at third and was picked off after the Pirate second baseman (Neil Walker) caught a line drive that seemed headed for the outfield. It is embarrassing because there is absolutely NO reason for a runner on third to be running when a line drive is hit (although as Irwin points out, it does no harm on 3-2 with two outs and bases loaded). The Pirate third baseman (Jung Ho Kang) seemed to be surprised also and when he got the throw from Walker, he didn't do anything with it until his teamates yelled at him to throw it back to Walker. Anyway, Irwin wrote to me yesterday on this and provided a website with a nice video of the play.

Dogwoods and Azaleas in Bloom

We had a nice day yesterday and the forecast is for six days in a row with warm (80sF maximum) and dry (low 50sF dew points) days.

Both the dogwoods and the azaleas are in bloom concurrently.

The first image is Ann in front of two different colors of azaleas and two colors of dogwoods and some other brush to her left.

The second and third image show Ann between two dogwoods of the same color. I got some large dogwood blossoms in the foreground and the other dogwood tree in the background.

I also used a dense pixel setting and clicking on the pictures should enlarge them on your screen without getting blurry.
