A Day in Frederick County Part 1 - Hunting Lake

Our first destination in Frederick County was Hunting Lake.

This is an artificial lake in Cunningham Fall State Park.

The first image is Ann at the lake front beach (people do swim there in the summer).  It wasn't particularly cold but there was a stiff breeze.

The second image is also the lake but with the sun glistening on the water.

Both the images show some of the fall colors.

All the images on this and the next two posts expand when you click on them.

A day in Frederick county Part 2 -- Cunnigham Falls

Within Cunningham Falls Park, we took the half mile or so walk to Cunningham Falls.

This is a 75' cascade of water falls that is the highest in Maryland.

There wasn't much water in the falls that day but it had a nice setting with the leaves changing colors and the bright blue sky.

We saw someone we knew (a security guard who sometimes works at our synagogue).

The end of the trail has a nice boardwalk (you can see it in the second image) which also even has seats.

A Day in Frederick County part 3 - Carroll Creek Park

We spent most of the daylight part of the day in Frederick County Maryland but this was our final destination (about 10 miles south of Cunningham Falls Park).

The first image was taken at the Carroll Creek Park in the city of Frederick. The park is a linear park with a canal dividing the park.

The canal holds Carroll Creek a tributary of the  Monocacy River. It is about a half mile wide.  There are water lillies in the canal and water fountains and nice bridges that connect the two sides of the canal.

This park grew out of a 1970s flood control project and is still in development as the canal is extended downstream and upstream.

Before we walked the park area, we had a beer or two (or tea in Ann's case) at a German theme restaurant on the edge of the park (they had benchs outside where you could watch people promenade up and down the park. The sign above the address (second image) is from Berlin circa 1948-1990 (although the Berlin Wall wasn't built until 1961) .

Ebola Paperwork hits the Red Cross

I was at the local Red Cross station today giving platelets and plasma.

They had the usual intake paperwork but with an addition. There were Ebola warnings and questions.

Still it worked out OK. The actual procedure was quicker than the previous time because they had a two hand station available (two handed donation is quicker than one handed but you can't adjust the video player if you use the two handed one).

I viewed the 2004 movie The Manchurian Candidate. Its a good example of a movie where the plot contradicts one of the premises. The premise is that a private equity company called Manchurian Global controls the US.  The plot has the Manchurian Global company taking great risks at great expense in order to have a candidate they like become President so they can control the US even though they already control the government.

Final Beth and Sukkah images for 2014

Beth left today to return to Israel (by way of Dulles International Airport and Vienna, Austria).

She is wearing a shirt we bought when we visited the SF area back in 2002.

Before she left, I got an image of her in the left over portion of our sukkah from this year. Just the schach (roof) is on the sukkah as I had removed the extra chairs the electrical devices and the canvas walls.

If you click on the image you can see that most of the leaves are magnolia. They make a nice sukkah roof as they last for weeks without going brown after they are removed from the tree.

The second image shows what the left over sukkah looks like from near the sidewalk.

Another dream -

I had a dream in which I was in charge of producing and directing some complicated musical. This was a few days ago.

I don't remember what the subject of the musical was or what the score was like but there were lots of singers and lots of dancers and lots of actors and stagehands and whatnot.

Beth and George were helping me.

It seemed I was in a very urban and predominately black area also so I may have been working at the Apollo theater in Harlem.

In the dream some people were bothering me asking to be allowed to get autographs of the people in the musical and I was annoyed because I had a schedule to meet with rehearsals and whatnot.

Anyway, during the confusion I woke up.

Crack in Molar

Many months ago (back in 2013), I was eating a chocolate brownie. I felt something on my teeth. Intermittently, I had pressure or tingling or even a low grade pain in the tooth.

In June 2014, I was at the dentist and he could not find anything wrong either visually or with the X ray. The dentist said that the problem is probably a micro crack and we can hope it stays that way and doesn't expand but it probably will and if it does we'll treat it then.

Well, a few days ago the pain got worse (5 to 7 on the 10 point scale and I had a slight fever (99.8F). I started taking ibuprofen, the fever and the pain both went down. I made an appointment to see the dentist this pm.

The morning of the appointment I woke with no pain at all but a few hours later there was some pain (about a 2 on the 10 point scale). The dentist found the crack and took an image of the tooth roots. The image showed no damage to the root and there was no sign of infection. So the dentist recommended that he treat it as if it were a cavity and drill around it and fill it. That's what we did (only at the dentist for about 45 minutes total).

If the problem comes back, I'll probably opt for an extraction.

Ice Skating Dream

I had a dream in which I had taken Beth and George ice skating.

It was a very big ice ring, about as big as the area inside a high school 440 yard track.

The kids were skating nicely but as there were no other skaters and no obstacles or other attraction, they were getting bored.

Then who should show up but Stewie and Brian Griffen (from the animated show "Family Guy".

Then I woke up.

Nice fall day

Its the day before Succos 5775 and its nice and warm (mid 70s).

I got Beth and Ann to pose in front of a late blooming rose bush (click on either image for an enlarged view - Ann's expression is weird, however on one of them).

At the edge of the rose bush is the fig tree. It died down to a few inches above ground in the winter but grew about 6 feet during the summer.

We had a pesticide application the previous day but that doesn't show up on camera.

Beth Arrives for Visit

After a three flight trip (Tel Aviv to Vienna, Vienna to Newark, NJ, Newark to Dulles Airport, VA), Beth arrived about 715pm today (which was about 4 am Tel Aviv time).

We gave her supper and then she went to the couch.

She was pretty tired and by about 915 she was sleeping. Trina Cat took the opportunity to sleep on her.

Daisy Bush Blooms

I don't remember buying this and I'm not sure what it's actual name is but the image (taken today) is of what I call our Daisy Bush.

The plants have a woody stem like a bush but the leaves are shiny and hard (like the leaves of the Southern magnolia in the background.

Anyway, since the plant seems to do well, I'm planning to propagate it in the spring.
