National's Regular Season ends on Historic Note

On the final game of the season (Sept 28), Jason Zimmermann pitched a no hitter in a 1-0 win. It was the first no hitter thrown by a Washington (including Nationals, the Senators pre MN, and the expansion Senators) since 1931. It was also a home game making the fans happy (someone is hugging Zimmermann in the image).

The game, which was against the Florida Marlins, was otherwise somewhat meaningless. The National's had already clinched the Division title as well as home team advantage through the league championships play offs.

Oddly enough, this was the second season in a row that the Marlins ended there season with a no hitter. The no hitter in 2013 was also a 1-0 game with the Marlins beating the Tigers. Somewhat ironically, the Marlins scored their run in the 9th inning without the benefit of a hit.

The USA Today article on the National's game is here.

An ESPN article on the 2013 game is here.

USAA and Kangaroof

The first image shows the damage from the July 9 weather event. We didn't discover the damage until we got some big branches off the roof of the sun room about a week later.

By early August we had decided to call Kangaroof to see if they would fix it. The first person who came was a bit confused by the situation and they sent another person a week later.

In the meantime we called our home insurance company to get their estimate of the damage (there were some other minor things) because we have a thousand dollar deductible and the company gives you a discount if you don't report damages for 5 years or so.

It only took Kangaroof about an hour from the visit to give us a price and about 5 days from the second visit (August 15) to obtain the products that would be needed to fix the sunroof.

On the other hand, it took our home insurance company over two weeks, that is, from August 21 to September 5 (although that's 10 business days and that's the max they said it would be) to get an estimate. The insurance estimate was essentially the same as the Kangaroof price.

After we gave Kangaroof the go ahead to fix the skylight it was only 3 days or so and they had the job done. The final image shows the new view through the new product.

The Tahini is in

I was at Moti's Mart doing kashrut supervision today. One the first things I did was verify kashrut on an incoming shipment of tahini. Moti is a safardi and a lot of the customers are safardi and like tahini, apparently. The shipment had about 40 buckets of 40 pounds each. That's 0.75 of a ton of tahini.

Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds. It is high in calcium and protein and relatively low in sugar. It has a mild taste and spreads easily. Also, few people are allergic to it. Thus it has displaced peanut butter in some vegetarian diets and in some school lunch menus.

Smooth Driving

We went to lunch today.

After lunch we loaded some take out into the car with our newspaper (which we read while waiting for lunch) and our drinks.

Ann put her drink on the roof (image from internet - although my car is red) while putting the other stuff into the car and then forgot that the cup was on the roof.

I got in and drove off and about 100 yards later (and after going down a small ramp) Ann remembered her cup. I pulled over and the cup was still there and with no apparent spillage.

Injured LaRoche Delivers thrice

Yesterday, the National's won a 14 inning game from LA (in LA).

The Nationals used 26 players in the game
(setting a team record) including 10 pitchers (tying a team record). The game lasted 5 hours 34 minutes (setting a team record).

The hero of the game was a fellow who didn't come into the game until the 9th, Adam LaRoche, who is suffering multiple injuries. He didn't expect to play and left his personal bats in the clubhouse but was called on to pitch hit in the 9th. He used a Jason Werth bat and hit a 2 run homer to put the Nationals up by one (first image is the beginning of the HR, second image the post score celebration). LA tied it in the bottom of the inning LaRoche came to bat in the 10th also and was hit by a pitch in the elbow (which usually requires you to be replaced in the line up). Then in the 12th, he hit an opposite field single (he hardly ever hits to the opposite field) which put the Nationals up by 2 runs. LA again tied it in the bottom of the inning. In the 14th LaRoche hit into a fielder's choice (beating the relay throw to 1st to prevent the double play) putting the National's ahead for good (they later got two more runs). So LaRoche got go ahead at bats in 3 innings in the same game beginning in the 9th (who knows if that's a record).

Bad parking meter but good chocolate sponge-cake-tort

I was doing kashrut supervision in downtown DC. I had a bad experience and a good experience.

The bad experience was with the new (beginning in 2010 or so) parking meters (first image). I put in two quarters and the meter didn't register any time. The meter had instructions on who to call so I called the number. Then the phone tree instructions thanked me for giving them the information on the malfunctioning meter and asked if I wanted a text message to that effect. I gave the yes prompt and they sent me a text thanking me but also informing me that I would get a ticket if I parked at that meter.. So I had to find another meter and pay.

The good experience was that the event I was supervising had left over cake. The cake was a chocolate sponge tort with a thin coating of cake and a heavy chocolate pudding inside. I had watched the pastry chef some as he was making it. The cake part was two parts of eggs, two parts of margarine and two parts of chocolate for every one part of pastry flour. The pudding was, well heavy pudding. There was a chocolate and whitener whipped topping also (not shown on the image). Nice combination.

Really Hot and Humid but with some rain

Most of July and August was cooler than normal here.

However, at the end of August and beginning of Sept we have taken a tropical turn.

National airport had a max/min of 96F and 77F on August 31 and 95F and 76F on Sept 1. Dew points were in the low to mid 70sF (Kevin Shaw in Gaithersburg had a maximum below 90F both days).

The second image shows the National airport mean temperature anomaly (difference between recorded temperature and average temperature).

The graphs would show even more blue (below normal) if they were suburban or BWI or Dulles because National airport has had even more of a 'urban heat island' than usual (see the Kevin Shaw info above).  The graph is from the Capital Weather Gang

We did get some rain each day and there were some rainbows. The image came from the internet but the photographer was standing on the steps of the Lincoln Monument about 500PM on Sept 1.
