Lots of Rain 

In the past 48 hours we have had at least 4" of rain, probably more.

To the left is an image (from the internet) of Alexandria, Virginia (near the courthouse). 

I could take a picture around here but it wouldn't look as nice because of all the mud and debris. 

The two day rain totals were for BWI 6.50". DCA 3.91", IAD 5.28", Gaithersburg (Walrus's house) 5.47".

Some Oddities at National's Park 

I was at the game on April 23. I got a ride with a friend from my neighborhood both ways - he has a space in lot B which is adjacent to the stadium (and he has tickets in the lower deck - I'm in the 309 section, the upper deck).

Amazingly, the cherry blossom trees were blooming. The image shows one that is in a planter box in the back of the left field seats and there are several others just inside the entrance gates (also on April 24, I was in NW Washington DC and saw a bunch of full blooming cherry trees). This is despite the fact that some of the cherry blossom trees in our neighborhood and vicinity are well past their peak bloom (although some as still at peak - actually, I think there are a number of sub species).

Anyway, the National's won. This is the 13th time in a row that they've won when I went to the game (the previous time they lost when I went to the game was in 2009).

The National's were down 4-1to the LA Angels in the bottom of the 9th and staged an unlikely rally including a HR by the 2nd string catcher, a double by Jason Werth on a 3-0 pitch (Werth is the high jumping guy in the image) and a walk off single by Adam Laroche (left in the image) on the first pitch after the Werth double (Laroche had made an error in the previous half inning which led to the Angel's 4th run).

Make Passover Less Complex with this one Weird Trick 

We've decided to admit that we won't cook any dairy meals during Passover.

This allows us to declare all the vessels as meat so, for example, we may use the parve cutting board to cut meat. I had proposed this about 10 years ago and we've never had a cooked dairy meal during passover in that time.

The only dairy product we use during passover is yogurt (we don't use cow's milk any more - we've switched to almond and soy milk). We could use cheese also but just eat it off disposable dishes (or wash a regular dish off with hot water for that matter).

I'd like to take this further and declare no dairy cooking ever, but Ann isn't buying that - yet.

What a change from a month ago 

The two pictures (from the internet) were taken near the tidal basin on March 17 and April 12 respectively.


We've had several days with maximum temperatures 80F or about that.


I came home from Dallas yesterday and someone in the shuttle van with me had some just to see the Cherry trees.

Dallas: Ugliest and Prettiest 

While in Dallas, I did some fairly extensive self guided walking tours.

One of the interesting things to me was that the city has, in my opinion, the ugliest John F Kennedy memorial that I've ever seen. The first two images (from the internet) show it from the outside and from the inside. Its all institutional concrete with a small granite plaque with gold letters in the middle. Its on the 600 block of main street near where the assassination took place. The architect was Phillip Johnson. The design is a cenotaph (an open tomb) which 'floats' (because the concrete panels don't go all the way to the ground, just the posts do). It was built in 1970 and refurbished in 2000 and 2010.

On the other hand, Dallas has, IMO, the nicest modern Baptist Church I've ever seen (3rd image- also from the internet). It is also nice on the inside per photos that I've seen. It was completed in 2013.

Dinosaur Movie in3D 

I was in Dallas, TX from about April 9 to April 13.

There was conference on Transportation Economic Development. The conference ended on April 11 and I went to the Perot Museum of Science and Nature with a few people I know. 

The museum had a lot of dinosaur stuff but the highlight was a movie in 3D with various dinosaurs seeming to get right in your face (and yes there were 3D glasses). The image is from the Perot museum website.

They Know Everything 

Or maybe not.

Some time ago, Insightera, the company Beth works for was purchased by Marketo. I went to the Marketo website a few times to see what kind of company it was.

Today, I got sideline popups (on the PJMedia website and then from the wunderground site and then from the weather channel site) from Marketo.

Could be a coincidence.
