Winter Cold - Stinkbugs Hard Hit 

Back in 2013, we were supposed to have an epic outbreak of stinkbugs. Then it turned out we didn't and experts admitted they had no idea why. I posted on this here.

Perhaps based on that experience, some universities began studying stinkbugs more closely. One report of such study is that this winter has been very difficult for stinkbugs (I haven't cared for it much myself but that's another matter). Despite various adaptations to help them survive the cold, the stinkbug population has been decreased 95% from prewinter numbers.

Dream that made me tired 

I woke up about 5 am today.


In my dream I had been hired to take a short term job as administrator of a prison. 


Just as I got in to work, there was a roof leak I had to inspect and then when I came back to the office there were several large piles of papers I was supposed to read. The rest of the time I worked was just as harrowing.

After I woke up, I felt really tired from all the 'work' I had done. I ended up going back to sleep and stayed in bed until about 1000am.

Trip to San Diego 

Ann and I were in San Diego for a few days. Image is of San Diego as used in a tourism brochure.



We saw the zoo, Sea World, the Safari Park, La Jolla, Old Town and Point Loma.

Ann had, at one time, requested a trip to Hawaii with a side trip to San Diego. However, the logistics for this were too complex so we just did the San Diego part and we plan to do the Hawaii part at some other time.

Corcoran Gallery to be Acquired 

One of the lesser known tourist places in Washington, D.C. is the Corcoran Gallery. 



The museum opened in 1869 and moved to its current location on 17th and NY Ave in 1897. It houses one of the premier collections of American Art (it also has French impressionists such as Monet and Picasso and some others). 


Two of the American collection are the first two images. 


The Corcoran (the building is shown in the 3rd image) announced today that they would be acquired by the National Gallery of Art. The costs of running the museum (about $20 million) runs above their projections of income. The plan is to sell much of the collection which is housed outside the museum.

Snowy Owl Now Nesting in DC area 

A snowy owl has started nesting, presumably temporarily, on the roof of the Springfield Mall in Fairfax county VA.

Snowy owls are typically seen north of about 50N latitude but this year the DC area has seen two of them (the other snowy owl in our area hit a metro bus and is being treated at an animal shelter).

Other snowy owls have been seen even further south this year. It may be because of the cold winter or maybe just one of those things.

Snowchi 

We had a big snowstorm last night (dubbed 'Snowchi' by the local weather group Capital Weather Gang and 'Pax' by the Weather Channel). 

The snow began about 8pm but when I went to sleep at about midnight there was less than 1". However, by 6 am, we had about 10" of reasonably powdery snow. Then it began to drizzle about 7 am and by 10am the snow became wet and heavy (I paid people $60 to shovel the driveway and all the sidewalks - it took quite a while). We had some more snow in the evening. Apparently, Frederick county (to our west) had a number of reports of 23" or so. Even northern Montgomery county (Damascus) had over 20". Dulles airport had about 12", BWI airport had about 12". Reagan airport had about 7"



The first image is of a statue of a policeman in Chevy Chase (a real policeman would have worn a coat I think).



The second image is one of our stuffed animals on our car. That image is duplicated and explained on the stuffed animal blog.
