The Restaurant of my Dreams 

I had a nice dream. I was in a hotel or cruise ship. It was Friday afternoon and I was going to attend a sabbath event that evening with Ann at the hotel/cruise ship.

I decided to get something to eat for lunch at the restaurant of the hotel/cruise ship (which in my dreams must have been kosher). I got a steak salad (4 or so types of steak with a few root vegetable chunks thrown in for appearance).

I had just about finished when a waiter came and asked me if they could take my plate. I said I wasn't quite done. The waiter said they needed to prepare for the evening event and said my lunch would be free if I gave my plate back.

I woke up feeling very refreshed and not hungry at all.

Beth is Purplized 

Beth didn't change her work or her supervisor or her location.

The company she worked for, Insightera was purchased by Marketo.

Marketo went public in April 2013 and has been on an acquisition type expansion. 

The Marketo people went to her office and gave her a purple tea shirt with "Marketo" on it. So she says she was purplized.

security sweep at the museum of women in the arts 

I was doing mashgiach work downtown on the evening of December 9. It was the 100th anniversary of American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (nickname - "the Joint") and they were having a dinner catered (I was working with the caterer).

The featured speaker was Secretary of State Kerry. While we were still preparing the appetizers, people came and told everyone to get out of the building (it was cold outside too - in the low 30s). Then several people came in with dogs who were, apparently, trained to sniff explosives.

Of course, I had a pair of scissors and the catering personnel had some very big knives but those weren't the threat. 

This was also the first time I had been in that museum (they some nice Georgia O' Keefe and Mary Cassatt paintings and a lot of other stuff most of which I didn't think was very good)

Gentile Ice Storm followed by Gentle snowstorm 

We had an ice event on Dec 8 but it was relatively mild.

No power loss (yay!).

The ice was deposited on trees via a light drizzle and the temperature was pretty close to freezing.

This (first image) is what the crape myrtle trees in the front look like after the ice event.


Then on Dec 10 we had a gentle snow event. I took about the same angle picture after that (2nd image).

These Turnips Cost Plenty 

Last week, I was doing mashgiach work. They were preparing for two 600 person functions at the White House for the end of Chanukah. 

One the side dishes (served with the main course) was a vegetable medley. One of the components of the medley was mini turnips (see image), The mini turnips cost about $32/pound.  You get some 20-25 mini turnips in a pound.

I didn't taste them but they were supposed to have a meaty and nutty taste. They cut more of the stems off than in the image above (you are not suppose to eat the stems - they are edible but sour).

A & M at National Archives 

We went downtown today to see an exhibit of salvaged documents from Iraq. They were found in a flooded portion of Saddam Hussain's Intelligence HQ after the invasion in 2003. On the left is part of the Zohar (a 70+ volume commentary on the Torah containing substantial portions of mysticism).

One of our neighbors, Harold Rhode was primarily responsible for these items being saved. The exhibit included the shipping boxes with his name on it.

We also saw the US Constitution and attended a lecture while we were there.

Reunion of 1968 Northwood H School 

There was a 45th year reunion (actually about 45 + 1/2) of my high school class.

It was held about 8 miles from our house by car at a place called the Smokey Hill Farm. There were about 80 people there (about 20 were spouses of the classmates).

One of my old buds, Roger Grayson, took a picture and sent it to me. I'm holding a picture of me taken when I was in the 3rd grade.
