Interesting Invitation 

I got a postcard today that looked like the image on the left.

The MD farmers and hunters association wants me to donate any does (female mature deer) that I kill this season (which lasts until January) to an organization that cuts them up and gives them to the poor.

I think I got this postcard because I am a member of the NRA (I joined the NRA to get a $2500 discount on my hearing aids).

A Small Insect or Maybe Not 

I was doing Mashgiach work  yesterday. One part of this was washing lettuce and checking for insects.

Later that day, some of the lettuce was being used for lunch for staff. Someone saw what might have been an insect (about as large as in the image). 

During the washing I didn't use the washer at full blast (the way I would if it were for washing pots and pans) because I didn't want to destroy the lettuce. Probably the only way I would have seen the spot (or insect) would have been if I had a supplementary lighting device. I'll have to get one.

Gourmet Carrot War 

At the place where I work part time, one of the items they use to improve the presentation and taste quality of the main course is gourmet carrots.

For a while they were buying a type of carrot (orange of course) from a company in the central valley of California. The carrots are all the same size (about three times as big as the mini carrot and half as long as big carrots).. They have a small green head that is edible. They also have thin skin and a nice sweet nutty taste. They cost $20/pound - more than most cuts of meat.

Recently a company in Guatemala has been producing a competitor. It is about the same size and taste but it isn't as uniform in size. Also the company skins the carrots before shipping them. These are $10/pound - still a lot but a big savings on the California ones.

The End of the Android Netbooks 

Our Acer netbook was dying (several keys weren't working, etc.). As noted below (oct 20 post), G obtained two no name android operating system netbooks for about $100 each. Then the androids started showing their defects. First the antenna seemed to be weak. Then the yahoo mail interfaced was messed up. Finally, the recharge cord didn't fit right. We decided to trash them.

G got some surplus HP netbooks for $150 each with MS operating system (windows 7). So far they seem to work. They are about twice the weight of the androids but have connections for all kinds of peripherals that we won't use.

Lots of Brownies eaten the past week.  

 I've probably had about 8 varieties of brownies in the past week or two.

The sources were:

1. The event at the Mellon noted below.

2. An event in the Double-tree Inn.

3. Tasting some left in a refrigerator I was storing things in at our synagogue.

Some brownies had marshmallow topping; some had walnuts; some had extra icing on top.

But one thing was common. All were nice and goeey on the inside, just the way I like them. I remember growing up, my grandmother made brownies that were dry on the inside and I complained a few time but she said that's how they were supposed to be made (of course back then I just complained and didn't suggest more eggs and less oven time). Now, after a half century, everybody seems to have come around to my side on this subject. 

I was speaking a pastry chef at Potomac18, which is one of the companies with whom I work. He acknowledged that when he was training, the transition to 'goeey' was in progress and his trainer made a big deal about how a chef had to keep up with trends.

Jumper cables and a surprize 

Somebody in the synagogue parking lot needed a charge. I seemed to have been the only one with jumper cables so I lent him mine. 

I then pulled the car up next to his. A strange thing happened after that.

I couldn't find the battery under the hood.

Somebody else provided the charged vehicle for the operation (I went back into the synagogue where someone was giving away pastries and other goodies - someone brought me the jumper cables after they were done with them). 

When I got home I looked up the battery placement on the Chevy Cobalt.

Gasp.

It's in the trunk under the spare tire.
