Snow the morning before Passover

We don't have snow around Passover very often, but this year we had both an early Passover and also a cold March.

All these images were taken March 25.

First image is burning chometz (unleavened bread - that's something a house hold is to do the day before Passover) in the snow at our synagogue.

Second image is snow on cherry blossoms (it was an early blossoming sub species, most of the cherry blossom trees on the street are no where near ready to blossom). This is on our street a few  houses away from us.

Third image is snow around a hyacinth blossom (or pre-blossom) that is under a rose bush. Again, most of the hyacinths are still quite dormant, but this one was an early bloomer. This (and the one below are in our yard).

Here is Irwin's poem on the subject,

"I’m dreamin’ of a White Pesach
Just like the ones we used to know
With the special dishes,
Like my mama’s tzimmis
and the feir kashes, oh so slow!

I’m dreamin’ of a White Pesach
With every chametz crumb I throw
May your Chag be kasher und gut
And may all be blessed by gut gezundt
."

Irwin Weiss

Fourth image is snow on top of a hyacinth blossom (or pre blossom). Likewise, an early bloomer.

If there were a bit more snow people would have called this storm 'Pas-snower'. Frederick, Md. ended up with about 6", Frostberg, Md had about 12".

Passover story - table cloth cover

On my shopping list was clear table cloth covers.

I looked at three different grocery stores (Giant, Shoppers and Kosher Mart) and one Department store (Target) and no one had them.

We will get through the two big meals with the two we have left and by the final days of the Passover, our internet order will arrive.

But it is annoying that all of a sudden nobody carried an item that was routinely available for two decades at least.

Passover Story - Electric Mixer

I spent considerable time yesterday, kashering (steaming the metal to 'remove' the chomatz) the old electric mixer rods. Today we couldn't find them. After an hour of looking, George went out and got a new one for only $7.

Of course, since we are using it for food preparation, it had to be toveled, i.e., immersed in a mikvah (ceremonial pool) to commemorate it's 'purification under our ownership', and G went all the way to Silver Spring only to find (about 930pm) that the mikvah used for vessels was out of order.

So tomorrow, we'll go to the local one and hope we get it done in time for its use in cooking.

Ironically, I have been a long time opponent of making passover cakes because after the appetizers and big meal people are completely stuffed and have a hard time eating (and of course you are supposed to be hungry enough for a final piece of matzah and two more cups of wine).

Key Lost - Panic - Key Found

I went to the drug store to get some cough suppressant for Ann.

When I got back to the car I looked at my key chain and my car keys were missing (the other things on the chain were still there). I went back to the drug store to see if I left them on the counter. No luck. I checked the path between the car and the drug store. Still no luck. I thought I was going to have to walk home and get the spare key.

Then I checked under the edge of the car and stepped on the keys.

I secured them more thoroughly to the key chain.

Oddly, this is about two months from when Beth lost her entire key chain and got it back again.

Beth vs UKKO

Beth was supposed to come in late on March 18. However, there was a lot of snow in Toronto from Winter storm UKKO (that's not actually her plane but she was going via Canadian Air).

Her plane was able to get to Toronto but the one taking her to BWI wasn't able to take off because (she thinks) one of the pilots couldn't get to the airport because of the snow (based on airline announcement).

She stayed overnight in Toronto.

Then on March 19th she got a flight to Reagan Airport on the 19th.

Mini Vacation in Annapolis

Ann wanted to go to a meeting of the Tumor Registrar Association of Maryland meeting this year. It was held in Annapolis at the Ann Arundel, Maryland Hospital Center. She couldn't bum a ride with any Montgomery County people so I took her.

We stayed Annapolis for one night and did some walking around after Ann's meeting and the next day.

We were at the Maryland Inn, a building constructed in about 1780. It has been used for housing Maryland State legislators for all this time and for other purposes as well. For example, in 1898, it housed captured Spanish Admirals and other dignataries. By modern standards the rooms are on the small side but we had a spectacular view of the State capital out our window (it is lit up somewhat all night long).

One day we were out for a long walk and Ann didn't want to walk back. It turns out there is a free transit service for tourists in the touristy area that uses the e-cruiser shown above. We used that to get back to the Inn.

Of course there is lots else to see in Annapolis including, of course, the docks (see image). Almost everyone who visits Annapolis visits this site.

In addition there are the other old hotels (which are apparently allow people with dogs to use them), various museums (there were some 1812 War artifacts at the State Capital that we saw) and of course lots of souvenir shops, restaurants, pubs, custom silver shops and so forth.

Snowquester Bust

We were supposed to get a major snowstorm with amounts like those shown on the first image.

Because of the situation, we postponed a scheduled dental trip for Ann (we did that about 3 pm on March 5)..

There was even a local catchy name, "Snowquester" (which may have jinxed the storm according to the people who named it that) and, of course the Weather Channel name "Saturn".

It did start snowing about midnight on March 6 and by early morning, there was about 1" on the ground. It then snowed on and off all day.

Damascus, Maryland, about 10 miles to our north had about 5" and Leesburg, VA about 20 miles to our west had 8" and 60 miles south in Monticello, VA they had 20"and west and higher in elevation (McHenry, MD or Front Royal, VA) they had about 12" or so. However, we (Potomac) never broke through the 2" mark and National Airport did not break the 0.5" mark.

The national zoo got about 1' and that was enough for a panda to play in (2nd image).
