People do like Cilantro 

I was at Sienna's Restaurant last night doing kosher supervision. 

One of the things that surprised me is that people actually seem to like Cilantro. I washed 3 packages of it and by the end of the evening, almost all of it was used up.

People get the cilantro on salads (as in the image), as a pizza or calzone ingredient and as a component of pasta sauce.

Who knew?

On the other hand, as shown in the comic (which appeared in the newspaper on Jan 9), some people may be ideologically opposed to cilantro.

Anyway, I brought home pizza and we had some for breakfast. Yum.

Getting High on the Commute 

On the commute home today, Ann was on an earlier bus than normal on the 47 route.

Several seats in front of her, near the driver, was a fellow snorting what seemed to be cocaine.

Now, the Montgomery County Ride On buses have signs inside each bus that state the county policy against eating or drinking on the public buses. However, they don't actually say that snorting cocaine is against policy.

There is, to my knowledge, no song about doing cocaine on a public bus. However, there is the song by the Grateful Dead called "Casey Jones" which has one verse (actually the refrain or chorus) that goes like this, 

" Drivin' that train
High on cocaine
Casey Jones you better
watch your speed
Trouble ahead
Trouble behind
and you know that notion
just crossed my mind..."

Drift up to 1" deep 

We had some light snow today.

Panic. People stocked up on groceries.

Panic. People left the office early causing traffic jams.


While they did that, I got some pictures at the 'peak' of the 'snowstorm'.



The first is some of our very late blooming cone flowers with some snow on top.


The second is some of my rose bush.

If you click on that image (especially if you then click to expand it again), you will see that a 'just about to bloom' bud is covered with light snow. I also have some supergiant lillies in this garden. The dead stalk just to the left of the faded blossom is what's left from the summer bloom. 

 In the background is the bottom of our giant southern magnolia (it is about 90 feet tall - one of the tallest in the neighborhood).

Passover 5773 option 

I dreamt that we decided to do a "passover on the farm'. 

We got into a SUV and drove (possibly from the Des Moines Airport) to a farm and set up cooking stuff - pots, pans, jars full of various food products.

I then went out to the herd to slaughter a steer (not a sheep and I wasn't wearing a robe and belt and sandals - just normal 21st century stuff) for the occasion.

Then I woke up.

New Electric Meter 

We got a new electric meter today.

I went out about 20 minutes after installation and it still read 00000000. So maybe the first hour is free.

Woo Hoo.

Ann's Cataract Surgery - right eye 

Ann had eye surgery today.

She has cataracts in both eyes. The operation on the right eye was today. Next month she'll have the other eye fixed.

The surgery is quite advanced compared to a decade or so ago. The incision is only about 2mm long. The natural lens is removed and an artificial one is implanted. The operation takes about 15 minutes. We left the house at about 600 am and were home before 900 am. 

I found a parking space right at the patient exit. 

So far the 'fix' is working very well.

Citrate Reaction 

I went for apheresis (giving platelets) today. About 20 minutes into the procedure I found my lips vibrating and about 80 minutes in I felt nauseous and had to stop. Per the comments of the staff at the apheresis center I did some research on this. It appears that its was caused by the fact that during the procedure citrate is injected into the return fluid. The problem may be that I didn't have enough calcium in my blood. To make it worse I had oranges for breakfast which may have added citrate to my blood organically.

We'll see if yogurt before bed and milk for breakfast before donating will solve the problem.

Israel trip 

We left the US the day before Thanksgiving and returned Dec 3 (just an hour before the start of the Redskin game against the Giants).

Some Highlights:

First time on an Airbus 380

Visit with Beth for both Sabbaths.

The Aviary in Ramat Gan (just east of Tel Aviv)

The Veiled Art exhibit at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art

A visit to Jerusalem

A visit to Safed (in the North)

A visit to Tiberius (also in the North)
