Hybrid Super Storm Sandy 

For several days now we have been dealing with a hybrid storm that was part tropical but mostly a big winter like storm.

 
Somehow we got through it with a dry basement, no extensive power outage and no obvious outside damage. 

George drove through some of the worst of it going to Richmond, VA for a ceremony to be sworn in to the Virginia Bar and then coming back and dealing with numerous traffic problems caused by accidents.


During part of the storm, I did emergency Mashgiach work at a local restaurant whose proprietor decided she really, really wanted to open.

 
Kevin Shaw, who lives in Gaithersburg, got about 5" of rain. BWI airport got about 6" and DCA National got about 4" of rain. In the mountains there was snow.

G passes Virginia Bar Exam 

A few months ago, George went to Roanoke to take the Bar Exam in Virginia. 

He got electronic confirmation that he had passed the bar on Oct 11on Oct 13 received a USPS  package from Virginia will details. He will have to be physically in Richmond on Oct 29 to be sworn in and also there are some other miscellaneous things that are required. But the upshot is that he will, post Oct 29, be licensed to practice law in MD, DC and VA.

One Pitch Short of A League Championship Series 

Oct 12. The Nationals had a 6-0 lead in game 5 vs St. Louis.

Despite some wobbling by their starter and some relievers the game was well in reach however. Going into the top of the 9th, the National's had a 7-5 lead and Drew Storen (on the left in the image), a reliable relievers who had pitched well recently was on the mound.

With 2 on and 2 out, Storen worked the count to 3-2 vs.David Freese, the St L 3rd baseman. However, the next pitch was a ball, loading the bases.

The next batter lined one off the glove of the National's SS driving in 2 runs and tying the game and the next batter after that got a single to give the Cardinals a 9-7 lead which was also the final score. 

So passes away glory.

Teddy Roosevelt wins one 

Since late July 2006, the Washington Nationals home games have featured races between 4 presidential mobile puppets. The puppets have heads which resemble George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.The races usually occur before the bottom of the 4th inning.

Lincoln has won about 60% of the races and Washington and Jefferson have split the balance. That means that before yesterday, Teddy Roosevelt had lost more than 500 races. This includes a few in which he was disqualified, for, among other things, riding a segway. 

Yesterday, Teddy won the race although it was due to another mascot (who resembled the Phillies mascot) tripping the other three puppets.

This, that is the win by Teddy, was perhaps meant as a successful regular season for the Nationals in which they had the best record in MLB, the 2nd lowest team ERA and the 8th best team HR production (194).

It was also a year in which Detroit Tiger Miquel Cabrera won the AL batting triple crown (HR, RBIs and Batting Ave). This was the first triple crown since 1967.
