Eating Out Twice 

We ate out twice on Ann's 62nd birthday.

Once was for a late breakfast at a bagel place near our house. The amount and variety of toppings that can be placed on a large bagel is pretty surprising.

The second time was a late supper at a restaurant which had the premiere of a South American buffet.

G's Paper Published 

George received prints of the Drake Law Review in which his article,

"Prosecutorial Accountability After Connick v Thompson" 

was published.

It has 498 footnotes in about 60 pages of discussion. It ends on an optimistic note, 

"...Connick's legacy could provide a starting point for a culture of accountability and control of prosecutorial misconduct."

M saw one of these today 

I was at the post office today and the guy next to me in the parking lot had a DeLorean.

I told him that I hadn't seen one of these in at least 10 years, except in the movies (the Back to the Future series).

Only about 9500 of these were ever made (in the early 1980s). About 3000 are still in use according to the internet.

Attorney of Record 

G is now attorney of record for a child custody case in Montgomery County (his client seeks to gain custody based on the actions of her former husband). 

This is the first case in which he was attorney of record and he is giving his client a whopping discount to represent her.

Bad Intersection for the Weiss Family 

Today, G hit the curb turning east on Montrose from Seven Locks Road (he was rubber necking to look at the debris from another accident at that intersection - a mistake that Jeremy (of ZITS) might make).

In the image, the accident would be in back of the triangular traffic island on the right (this image looks east on Montrose).

This is the second accident our family has had at this intersection (Beth totaled a Hyundai back in 2003 or so making a left from northbound Seven Locks to westbound Montrose).

Case Closed for G 

G got a check in the mail last week. It was for a case that was closed a month or two ago (a drug related case).

It was the first case that he worked on that was closed (he doesn't get paid on federal cases until the case is closed which means the lag between doing work and getting paid may be many months).

Moussaka 

Ann decided to make Moussaka today.We are using a recipe from the Fishbein book shown on the left (the recipe is on the internet here).

How many times do you have to buy eggplant in order to have enough for Moussaka.

If you are the Weiss family, the answer is twice (and it took 3 trips to the grocery to do it). Somehow, after one of the trips we 'misplaced' the eggplant and during the second trip (for other ingredients) we didn't realize we had 'misplaced' it.

Corian: Kasherable for Passover 

In our kitchen, the counter tops are Corian. (the image shows a corien piece being labeled with a high power drill).

Corien is made of made of acrylic and an aluminim based powder.

For some years we had covered our counter tops for Passover but the investigations of the past few years have resulted in various Boards, e.g., the Chicago Rabbinical Council, declaring that Corian is kasherable for Passover. 

Actually, we had made the decision years ago to abandon the coverings because we don't eat on, nor prepared food on, the countertops (we have cutting boards and mixing bowls designated for Passover). But its nice to know we were, in some sense, ahead of the curve.

One Idea Worked; One, not so much

I had two ideas this week. 

One idea was to use empty beer bottle six pack boxes for the mishloach manot (presents for friends) this Purim. The six compartments are good for placing the different prepared foods. I call this a Martha Stewart idea. It worked quite well.

The other idea was to use roasted pistachio nuts in an Israeli salad. I call that a Rachel Ray idea and it didn't work so well. The nuts absorbed the cucumber juice. I got the idea from reading about using roasted pistachio nuts in a couscous salad. Obviously I didn't think about the water content issue.

A Fast of Esther Miracle 

Last week, Ann began using an email group which required GMail. I had a Gmail account in order to use blogger. Ann and George deleted my Gmail account so Ann could have one (instead of just establishing a new Gmail account and making the email group reestablish their list serve)

The result of that was that Google deleted all 14 of our blogs. The recovery process took a while. First they got back the blogs but without most of the images. Then they took those away to work a while longer. Then we got an email saying that Google wasn't sure that we were who we said we were and to reapply. After a bit, George guessed that Google simply sent us the wrong form email and that they meant to send us the letter that says, "get a new password'.

Anyway, a few minutes after that, all 14 blogs were recovered including images. It is the fast of Esther 5772 today - hence the title.
