ICC Week for the weisses

The east segment of the Intercounty Connector was opened and the road was free for two weeks.

We used the road twice on Thanksgiving to go to and from Baltimore, then used it twice today to go to and Havre de Grace and we will use it again tomorrow to go to and from North Silver Spring (podiatrist).

Other than the first leg of the first trip we've been getting on and off the ICC at the Georgia Ave (Maryland 97) exit and using Norbeck Road and the Wooten Parkway to connect with our area of Montgomery county.

Havre de Grace

We are lucky to have a friend, Susan Myers, who lives in Havre de Grace.

This gives us an excuse to visit the place every so often. It is a very nice place. Quaint downtown (image on left with Sue on the right). Picturesque waterfront (other image), etc. Some of the townspeople are proud of the fact that when the walkway near the bay was dedicated in the 90s, both the President and the Vice President were there. They say that was because Havre de Grace is easy to make secure against assassins and because both Clinton and Gore liked the place. Who knows.

How many ways can you say 8211


We've had several visitors or service folks say that they couldn't see our address (the 8211 over the door isn't easy to see from the street and the 8211 on the lamp post is covered with a morning glory vine during part of the summer).

So, this fall, I installed what Ann calls, "lollipop numbers" in the lilly patch near the sidewalk. Even if you can't see the numbers you can see the "lollipops" and the reflectors show at night.

Book vs balloon

My cousin Ed Deitch is recovering from a heart attack.

I was looking at possible balloon arrangements (the one with the fish was the closest I could come to for one that wasn't too cute or too stupid or too cheesy). Ann suggested I get Ed a book. It turned out to be a good one. I got the book for about $8. The balloons would have cost about $80 and when they are gone, they are gone. It is not always easy to get someone a book but I had a conversation with Ed earlier that day and Ed introduced the issue of gun control. So this time the book option was easy to execute.

End of the ER Project

The image is the team that is abstracting info for the study of impact of drugs and alcohol on people admitted to Emergency Rooms.

The study, which is being conducted by WESTAT Research, is funded by SAMSHA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration). The scope of the data for the study includes dozens of hospital emergency departments across the country.

The project is to end in January of 2012. Ann is on the left in orange.

G and the Clothes

George was in Atlanta visiting KBL. He went via air for only the second time since 2001.

We had some clothes at KBL's place that we needed to bring home. It turned out to be $18 to ship it via Fed Ex (including the box). It would have been $25 to bring a bag containing the clothes on the US AIR flight. The box went Fed Ex. It was delivered to our house on the 16th; the day after G got home.

Independent Checker Action-
Allowed by Shoppers

I was in Shoppers today. I had a lot to buy and it took two cups of coffee (which is self serve).

I finally got to the checker and told her to charge me for two cups of coffee (its 99 cents each). She said,

"You have lots of groceries (it was over $100) and you come here a lot(that is certainly true - and usually I get a cup of coffee and have them charge it at the check out) so I will only charge you for one. Mr. Greene would approve, I am sure."

I looked up the location at the Shoppers website and sure enough, a Jeff Greene is the manager.

Another Dream

We've been having a problem with ants (the very small sweet gum type).

I dreamt that we got an anteater as a pet. In the dream the anteater was about the size of a small dog - say 20#.

Actually, we have a contract with a pest control company and they come when we call them and they are pretty good otherwise. So I don't think an anteater pet is in our future.
