Evening at the Opera

On Sept 22, Ann and I were at the Kennedy Center to see the Opera, Tosca .

Placido Domingo was the conductor of the orchestra. Patricia Racette was Tosca. Alan Held was Baron Scarpia (in the image).

Interestingly, the fellow who played Angelotti was Kenneth Kellogg who is black and his sister was supposed to be blond. Oh well, that's Opera.

There are two suicides in the opera (Tosca is one of them) and one person is killed by firing squad and one person is stabbed to death (that's Scarpia). Good family entertainment. Before the performance, I read the article on Tosca in the Opera book my father had once upon a time (obviously, we have the book now) and the wikipedia article on Tosca.

Also, apparently, actual libretto in Italian refers to Tosca as a diva. It comes from a latin term meaning goddess but referred to a female singing sensation.

Before the performance we walked around the rooftop promenade and had some beer. Nice evening, but a bit pricey.

Wanted:
Baby Carrots

Years ago, this food was not sold in grocery stores.

Today, I looked at the grocery list that Ann had produced late last night (about midnight). Of the first 5 items, 3 were baby carrots.

According to one source, about 20 years ago, the first regional marketing of baby carrots took place. There are two ways to get baby carrots. One is to harvest immature carrots or carrots that were grown together too much. The other is to cut regular carrots into baby carrot shape.

Almost all the baby carrots eaten in the US come from the south end of the San Fernando Valley in California.

Beth has another bicycle stolen; Given a replacement the same day.

She had one stolen in about 2004. She didn't buy another one until 2010. It was stolen a few days ago at the place where she leaves it when she picks up the bus in Ramat Gan to go to work. The thieves left the lock rather than the wheel.

She was walking home dejectedly when she saw a neighbor. They spoke and Beth told the story of her bicycle. The neighbor said, "I have a fold-able bicycle (that's the other image) that I never use. You can have it- I need the space."

A Lumber Story

During the early summer, we bought a new sukkah (to go on our new outside deck).

Thus the wood that used to be used for the floor and top of the old sukkah became surplus.

I placed the wood on the front lawn between the sidewalk and the street. I put a "Free. Please take" sign on it. That was about August 22. A few days after I put it out, it was still there. I called the Montgomery County special trash collection division. They said they would not collect raw lumber or used lumber. I asked if they would collect a bookcase. They said "yes" they would. I then said, that if I made the lumber into a sloppy bookcase, would they take it. They said, "yes, but it would have to look like a bookcase" (this was said with a chuckle).

Anyway, within a few days, some of the wood have been taken and today, the rest was taken.
