That's the new car.

We traded in the old 2001 Hyundai for a 2001 Corolla (about $11k). This was at CarMax.

Sounds insane. But it's not.

The Hyundai had about 100,000 miles. All four doors and both bumpers were damaged. One of the tires was damaged. One of the suspension bars was damaged. It did have a new battery.

The 2001 Corolla has 16,000 miles. Really. It was probably a corporate fleet vehicle that nobody wanted to use. It was actually manufactured in December 2000 which, per some reckoning, makes it a vehicle from the previous century. The battery seems to be from 2008 and seems to be a 7 year model.

We also got a 72k service contract (about $1000). The 2001 Hyundai was sold to Carmax for $25o.

We have 5 days to bring it back for a full refund if we want. One of the guys at CarMax said a man purchased a car one day and brought it back 5 days later with 6000 miles added. Seems insane and almost not believeable.

A Minor Scam Discussed

On the way to buy a new used car, G pondered something out loud. The issue was what would happen if an automatic camera took a picture of a car with a temporary license plate (because the owner of the vehicle might be a dealer with the driver being someone else).

I said this was like the scams imagined by one of G's elementary school friends, Robbie Brown. Robbie liked to think of petty scams that would get you in trouble while the reward for success was in the two or low three digits. It turned out that when we bought the new car, the dealer was able to provide permanent plates. Maybe the MVA had already thought that scam through.

Some Additional News about the Nationals

On April 15, the Nationals won their 3rd extra inning game of the season. This was in the 13th game of the season. Last year they didn't get their 3rd extra inning win until game 162.

April 16 was a rainout but on April 17, the Nationals swept a double header (their first double header sweep since 2009)

In the second game Jerry Hairston (whose father and grandfather were played in MLB and whose image is shown) got a HR, Double and single. This increased his BA to 0.154 (he was 1 for 22 going into the game).

Werth vs Phillies

I was at the game yesterday (courtesy of Stanley Cohen).

The Nationals beat the Phillies and the game player was Jason Werth (a double and HR) who formerly played for the Phillies. This was the first Washington vs Philadelphia game of the season.

His actual full name is Jayson Richard Gowan Werth but goes by the name Jason.

The game was also notable for being somewhat cold. It was about 50F with a stiff breeze. (I've been at games played in the 40s before so this wasn't that bad).

Made Tea the Old Way
(not a political statement)

We ran out of the ice tea mix we usually buy a few days ago. I made several pitchers of tea the old way during the week. That is, I used tea bags.

After the tea, I put in some lemon juice and some artificial sweetener.

Not bad (and less expensive) but I'd rather have the mix (I bought some more mix today).
