Thundersnow and yet another electricity outage
On Jan 26, we had about an inch of snow in the early am. Then it turned to rain. I picked Ann up at work about 300pm and got home at about 315 pm just as the rain turned to sleet. About a half an hour later the sleet changed to snow. We had lightening and thunder during the snow.
There was no more than about 6" of snow but it was very heavy and wet. We lost electricity about 1115 pm on Jan 26 but power was restored about 2pm on Jan 27.
Unfortunately, we then lost it again about 7pm on the 27th. We finally regained it again about 8am the 28th.
We then had a short (a few minutes) loss of power about 1100 am on the 28th.
UPDATE: Then we had a fourth outage for a few minutes about 1130pm on the 28th.
An article in the Chevy Chase Patch reports on a meeting earlier this month in which PEPCO says it has increased its tree trimming budget as well as its program of moving some critical lines below ground. However, PEPCO says it will take several years for these efforts to be completed.
also, week 898 of the style invitational (a Washington Post feature) invited readers to issue a prophesy for the year 2011. Here was one of the entries,

Michael Haywood's Not so excellent tenure as head football coach at Pittsburgh.Some football coaches have tenure that seem eternal (Joe Paterno has coached 61 years at Penn State, 45 as head coach). However, Michael Haywood's time at Pittsburgh did not include a single game and lasted only 16 days.
He was hired after the 2010 season ended with a crushing loss at home to West Virginia. He was fired Jan 1, 2011 after he was arrested and then released from custody and charged with domestic violence. Haywood coached the U of Miami to a 9-4 record in 2010, a big improvement from their 1-11 record in 2009 (he was head coach in 2009 as well).

Here's a look back at the highlights of the illustrious Mike Haywood era at Pittsburgh:
Dec. 16: Pitt officially announces Haywood as its head coach. Athletic director Steve Pederson throws around words like "character" and "integrity." Haywood doesn't crack a smile throughout his news conference and says the Panthers will play like Freddy Kreuger.
Dec. 18: Pitt assistant Jeff Hafley declines an offer to stay and be a part of Haywood's staff and instead takes a job at Rutgers... The rest of Pitt's staff is dismissed, getting a head start on Haywood's fate.
Dec. 19-30: Tranquil times. Haywood is presumably working on assembling his staff, getting to know the school and the players and even watched a practice or two.
Dec. 31: Haywood is arrested in South Bend, Ind., on charges of domestic abuse.
Jan. 1: The day's events can be summed up by one amazing, probably unprecedented headline in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "New Pitt coach released from jail, fired." The story neglects to mention that Haywood finished his Panthers career undefeated.
