Really Expensive Jelly Donuts

Back a few weeks, my wife had a discussion about donuts with one of the food experts we know. The food expert said that the Kosher Pastry Oven(that image of the pan with the donuts on them is theirs) had the best such donuts in town.


We attended a Hannukah party and the day of the party, one of my assignments was to purchase a dozen of their jelly donuts. It cost about $20. The 8 people at the party ate only about 4 of the dozen (most of us are overweight). I also got a speed camera ticket for $40 on the way back from the place (I got that in the mail late last week). So the 4 donuts we ate (they were good by the way), cost us about $15 each.

One of the people who attended the party took the other 8 to his office to share with co workers.So if you count those, the per donut cost was 'only' $5.

Lunar Eclipse

We had a lunar eclipse earlier today. Later in the day we pass the winter solstice. This is the first coincidence of the two in several hundred years.

I fell asleep early last evening then got up for the astronomical event. I went outside about 130am for the beginning of the event then in about 135 then out again about 200am for the transition to total eclipse then in about 210 am.

Yes, the moon does have a reddish glow to it during the event. This is, IIUC, because of the many sunsets on earth scattering reddish light out, some of which is intercepted by the moon.

Wally imitates me.

For several years, when work at the office got me angry I said to myself, "be like Wally, be like Wally". I did this because unlike Dilbert who fights the system, Wally embraces the system to empower his own laziness.

In today's strip, Wally got a goatee. I grew a goatee after I left the government.

G and the Bagel

G was in Philadelphia 12-10 and 12-11. He came home on the 11th. He stopped in Baltimore and got a bagel w egg and cheese and some salad (at Goldberg's). On 12-12, he woke up feeling sick and vomited repeatedly, enough to risk dehydration and have serious pain even between events.

He checked into the Emergency Department at about noon. The Emergency Department at Suburban gave him an anti nausea drug and some pain killer. I watch pretty much the entire Redskins game at the hospital. G was dismissed just about the time the Redskins lost the game via a fumbled snap on an extra point (really!).

It seems that it was a virus but maybe the virus was in the bagel.

Two (at least) Electrical Outages Today


Apparently the number of electric grid disturbances is up in the past decade or so.

Apparently our provider (PEPCO) is one of the least reliable in the area.

We did not have a wildfire, temperature extreme, ice or snow or a thunderstorm or a windstorm today.

After the second outage, I went out to the street and it seemed someone was working on the electric line.

Postscript: I purchased three combination night lights/flashlights/emergencylights on the 14th.

How to get rid of a dead Squirrel

Coming home from various errands yesterday (Wednesday) I noticed a dead squirrel on the street near our driveway.

I decided to wait until Friday to triple bag the creature and dispose of it in my trashcan. This is because Friday would be marginally warmer (high about 40F instead of 30F) but not warm enough to get the corpse decaying.


Well when I came home from errands today, the squirrel was gone. Maybe the county got it. Maybe a local dog. Whatever.

Dominating the Market

Today, about 2 billion (or 3 billion) depending on which story you read) shares of Citibank traded. That was about 40% of all shares traded on the NYSE.

That may sound more significant than it is. The stock averages about 400 million shares traded each day. There are about 60 billion shares outstanding (it closed today about $4.5/share). The news was that the federal government sold its shares in the company and subsequent to that there was speculation that the company might announce a dividend. Our family owns a few thousand shares directly (more indirectly since it is held by many mutual funds).
