The Return of the Apple Cake

We had apple cake back in the fall for Rosh Hashana. Ann used gala apples instead of granny smith apples and I didn't like it that much (it may have been because of that but of course I'm not sure). She put the leftovers in the freezer until she could think about what to do with it.

We are cleaning out the freezer to get ready for Passover. Ann defrosted the apple cake and somehow the long freezing made it taste better.

Ha.

Rain and Rain

Over the past few days we have had rain. Lot of rain. Rain with wind, rain without wind.

We lost power for about 4 hours on March 13.

The image is of downtown Alexandria VA (Prince Street) where flooding from the Potomac River is inundating the parts of streets near the waterfront.This was from the same storm that delayed G's Amtrak trip. Also in the northeast, train travel was hurt. This report indicates that a NJ Transit trip was delayed by 4 hours and that 500k homes lost power.

G Visits Atlanta

For several years George and Beth have been visiting Atlanta solo to see their grandmother.

We think this is better than making a family visit because it is less strain on her and she gets more 'days per year' of visitors.

Anyway, this time, G's return trip, by Amtrak left Atlanta more than 7 hours late. He was told when leaving his g-ma that the delay was 1 hour. Then when he got to the station, the delay was 3 hours. Then it was increase to 4 and then ultimately to 7 hours. The delay was caused by the Amtrak rule that they have to travel slowly (no more than 15 mph) when traveling through a flood watch area. Apparently, almost the entire distance between New Orleans, LA and Birmingham, AL was under a flood watch. G did upgrade to a sleeper compartment (it was deeply discounted).

Once, shortly after being married, Ann and I were in a derailed train going to Atlanta (it was then operated by the Southern RR). Sometime later we took a family trip to and from Atlanta by Amtrak that was delayed about 4 hours on the return trip (by a mishap between New Orleans and Atlanta).

Your Catalytic Converter is here sir

It isn't often you get a catalytic converter delivered to your door (and no, the delivery person didn't say exactly that, it was something more like 'uh... package for you...uh').

But today we did get a catalytic converter delivered.

One of our cars has 82k miles on it and needs a new catalytic converter to pass the emissions test (or at least we are pretty sure of this based on examination of the car by a mechanic, one visit to the emission testing place and reading about the emission test). It isn't worth fixing to the 'get a brand new converter from the factory' standard but is worth fixing to the 'use a converter from he aftermarket' standard.

So George bought one on line (the mechanic will not use the aftermarket himself but will agree to put on something brought to him if it fits (G did the leg work on this).
