Extremely Urgent Mail

Today, we received a letter marked "EXTREMELY URGENT".

It was an offer from Dish Network for satellite TV and was sent to my father, P. Weiss. My father died about 20 years ago.

Dish Network didn't even exist back then.

On the plus side, Dish Network was offering 120 channels for $19.99 for an entire year.

H1N1 Vaccine -
1st Attempt

Last week we received a notice telling people there were free vaccination events for the H1N1.

Both G and Ann are eligible because they have had asthmatic problems in the past.

They were in line for about an hour when the clinic ran out of the injectible vaccine.

(that's a virus on the right)

This situation was reported by local news outlets and the Washington post however there was no image of a virus.

Dryer Week

Last week (about Oct 14) our dryer stopped working. I called and make an appointment for today between 8 and noon. The repair guy didn't show until 420 pm (but gave me a $35 discount for that). The heating element was broken. It would have cost about $200 to fix (in addition to the service call). But since the dryer was more than 10 years old and because we had a coupon, we went to Sears and bought an upgrade. It will have a 7.5 ft -cubed capacity (current one is 5.9) with some other bells and whistles.

Cost of the new one (after all discounts, warranty, etc. will be about $500.

Cold Week

Beginning with Wednesday 14, we've had 5 days with maximum temperatures at least 15 degrees F below normal.

As a bonus there was quite a bit of rain and wind.

If I had any bald spots on the lawn, it would be a great day to put the grass seed out.

It would be a disaster if such a 5 day period would happen in January.

How Great is Naproxen

Yesterday, about noon, while disassembling the sukkah I had a bit of a fall. I twisted my ankle. The pain was gone in about an hour but then the pain came back with a vengence by about 8pm or so.

Two tablets of Naproxen and an hour later, the pain was gone. Today, the pain came back about 9am but two more naproxen tablets and a hour later it was gone again.

Naproxen was first sold in about 1980 (as Aleve) and was available in the US only by prescription for several years (many countries still require a prescription to use it). In 1994 or so, the FDA allowed it to be sold over the counter. This was about the time the product could be sold as a generic.

Thank you, whoever invented this product.

"I Can't Wait to go to Walgreens"

A new store moved into a shopping center near us (its about 0.7 miles NNE of our house). It is a Walgreens and today we visited it.

Ann went in, I waited for her in the nearby Starbucks. She said the prices were better than at CVS. I wouldn't know since I don't understand much about the products she buys.

She may also have emotional reasons for liking Walgreen s. Her father worked as a pharmacist at a Walgreen's in Five Points Atlanta. It became somewhat of a rough area and once he had to use force on a customer who was threatening other customers. Soon after that incident he worked for a pharmacist about 2 miles north of Five Points.

We are Doubling Up on our Sukkot lamps

There was a sale at Target on lamps. We decided to take advantage of this and double the number of lamps in our Sukkah (from 1 to 2). I thought this would let me easily read the words printed on the inside of the side wrap around the sukkah. However, the bad light wasn't the only problem. The words are also fading with time.
