Chrysanthemums:
A fifth try

I've tried 4 times before to get these flowers to grow in my yard. I planted two pretty study looking plants in my yard today.

Supposedly, they are hardy and easy care flowers. However, there must be something that keeps this from success.

One possibility is that there is something about the soil here that is toxic to this plant.

Another possibility is that I plant them near bulbs that are big water users and the mums can't compete well for the moisture.

Is $1.50 off the regular price a bargain?

I was at Nationals Park yesterday, courtesy of Stanley Cohen. In the top half of the 7th inning, the beer vendor came around offering his last two bottles of beer for $3 off. After a short conversation, we agreed that I would buy one of the bottles for $1.50 off.

That bottle (16 ounces) ended up costing $6.

I'm not sure that is a bargain.

Btw, the Dodgers won the game 14-2. Two of the Nationals pitchers (Livan Hernadez and Saul Riveria) gave up 13 runs between them).

Pirates Clinch 17th Consecutive Losing Season

Yesterday, the Pirates clinched a losing season.

This would not be a big deal except for the fact that they had had 16 previous losing seasons.

This gives them the record for most losing seasons in a row in major league baseball. It also gives them the record for the longest season losing streak in any of the 4 major pro sports.

Phillies (1933-48) have also had as many as 16 in a row.

The Vancouver Canucks (NHL, 1976-91) and Kansas City/Sacramento Kings (NBA, 1983-98) had 15 consecutive losing seasons each and the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a 14-year streak (1983-96).

First Walk Off HR in... a long time

I was at the National's afternoon game Sept 6 (with Rich Weinstein, courtesy of Stanley Cohen's tickets). Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, Ryan Zimmerman hit a 2 run HR to end the game. At the left is the celebration.

The Nationals had a reasonably good game in that made no errors and made some good heads up plays. However, they blew one inning with bad base running and their closer (Mike MacDougal seen in the image). pitched very poorly.

The Nationals hadn't had a walk off HR since the opening game of the 2008 season (about 150 home games ago) and I hadn't seen a walk off HR at a game I personally attended since 1965 or so.

We got pretty decent parking place for$10 and got on the highway quite soon after we left the parking lot.
