Invocation line: "Lord, without you we can't do nothing."On the first day of a meeting in New Orleans, there was an invocation by an ordained minister who is also on a school board and a participant in the agenda of the Delta Region Authority (with whom I've been working for a few years).He was giving the opening invocation. One of his lines was the one in the title. This reminded me of a long ago (1960s) episode of Star Trek called "A piece of the action."Spock and Kirk are on a planet that models its society like the Chicago Gangs of the 1920s. Kirk and Spock (dressed in 1920s attire as in the image on the right) are attempting to persuade one of the gang leaders (named Bela Oxmyx - he is in the middle of the three gang leaders in the left image) to take some actions to unify the society. The dialogue goes as follows:
Kirk- "We're trying to help you, Oxmyx."
Oxmyx -"Nobody helps nobody but himself."
Spock - "Sir, you are employing a double negative."

Two Free Cans of Beer On a USAIR Flight
I was returning from New Orleans the evening of June 25. We got on the plane but because of lightening in the area the plane wasn't allowed to leave the gate for about an hour (obviously I got home late). The stewardess provided two complimentary beers (I offered to pay but she said 'its on the house'). Actually the cans were blue rather than red and also regular 12 ounce rather than the blow ups in the image. I also discussed the book "Grendel" with her.
Electricity Gone in Thunderstorm
We lost power sometime between 3 and 4 pm on June 4 [power was restored at about 2pm on June 5].
G got us a take out supper and some D batteries (Ann objected to candles) and we had a decent night. The outside temperature was lowered by several hours of rain and it was comfortable sleeping despite the lack of air conditioning or even fans.
Irwin was caught in the storm at the golf course but only got a little wet, didn't lose power and didn't get in an accident on the way home.
From 8 to 12 and a happy work story also
Our security people recently required us to replace our security codes to get on the system. The old standard was that our password had to have 8 characters, at least one upper case and one lower case letter, at least one number, at least one upper row character (e.g., !, @, #). Now we have to have at least a 12 character password (with the same other aspects). It took me 5 tries before I could type the new password three times in a row correctly (which is part of the protocol to replace the password).
The good story relates to an event where I came back from a trip the day the usual trip approval person was going on leave and missed by an hour of giving her my data. I was told to have the substitute do it but dithered because I was trying to figure out what apologies I should give for making the substitute do the work. I didn't need to bother. The substitute came to my office and said that the regular person had said to be sure to help me. How nice. :)
