Uh. I don't have the grocery list.

I was home today. Ann wrote out and grocery list and asked me to drop her off at the JCC so she could use the gym while I shopped for groceries. We did this but she didn't give me the grocery list. Fortunately I had my cell phone so everything came out reasonably well.

The Maryland State Flag


We were parking yesterday on a side street. Someone was flying the Maryland State Flag from a pole affixed to their house. Ann asked, "What's that; something from China?" She didn't recognize the state flag. This is partly because she is not from Maryland and partly because people don't fly state flags very much. Ask 100 Marylanders and I doubt even one would know the origin of the two theme subimages. The red and white symbol is the family crest of the Crossland family. The yellow and black is the crest of the Calvert family. The two families, both from Yorkshire, were linked when Leonard Calvert married Alicia Crossland. Their grandchild, Cecil Calvert designed the flag (this all happened in the 17th century)

Too Bad There Aren't More Days Like Today At Work

I got two emails today that really brightened me up. One was from a fellow at an institution with which I haven't had such great experience. They, in effect, promised to provide a very substantial portion of the cost for the next Transportation and Economic Development conference (of course, more confirmation on this will be needed to firm it up).


The other was from a fellow in California who is providing me information that I need to test a highway idea. The information he provided was almost exactly what I had wanted.

The Awakening Moves


When the kids were little they loved to visit Haines Point, an Island in the Potomac, and play on a statue (or a series of them) which shows a giant buried in the mud and seeming to awaken and move.


This statue moved yesterday from Haines Point (where it has been since 1980) to Maryland near the I-95 crossing of the Potomac south of Washington DC, where it will be part of the National Harbor project.

Lunar Eclipse






We had a nice night for viewing the lunar eclipse last night and I was able to get George up to see it.

However, the viewing wasn't as nice as for Mohammad Taher Pilevar of Hamedan, Iran who took the above image and placed it at the spaceweather website:

The red tint comes because the moon is back lit from light which comes from the earth and the earthlight is red because the blue light gets reflected on the light side of earth rather than being scattered into the dark side.

G News

George was in Atlanta Feb 12-14. He used Amtrak. In both trips, the train left the origin station on time and arrived at the destination before the scheduled time.

Since his departure from law school he has received a number of emails from people saying that they miss him. His reaction is a muted version of what Sally Field said in 1985 after winning the best actress award (movie was Places of the Heart), " ....I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me." The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!"

Let's See if I get credit for this

So on my day off I took Ann to work. On the way I asked her if she had the candy she was bringing in. She didn't and I took her back home, picked up the candy and dropped her and the candy at work. She promised to tell her co-workers that her husband was responsible for the candy.
