A dry day in Arizona

At 600pm local time today (June 28), Mesa Arizona had a temperature of 108F and a dew point of 6F resulting in a relative humidity of 2%.

Ah yes. This is the State that show have on its license plates the words, "but its a dry heat"

-------
Follow up - The next day (June 29) I looked at the dew point in Mesa and at about 900am local time it was up to the 44F (with a relative humidity of 19%).

M Joins Team New Balance

After several years of being advised to do so by Ann, I finally bought a pair of New Balance soft shoes. I had worn out the exercise shoes that I had been using at work. Since the NB shoes are pricier than the previous pair of soft shoes I bought (a non name brand purchased about 5 years ago at Payless), I decided to also wear the NB to and from work which required me buying another pair of dress shoes. So as of this week, I'm on the team. One person at work told me that she has 4 pairs of NB shoes, another told me she has three pairs. Its almost a cult.

Airplanes and bowling

I had a dream last night that somehow I acquired a 707 type airplane (six across seating in economy class). I arranged for the plane to be given to the CES Jewish Day School. Then I learned that they wanted to take all the seats out and use it as a 4 lane bowling alley. For some reason, I didn't like that and I was on my way to the school to complain when I woke up.

A Stuffed Animal Has a Favorite TV Show (hint- its on cable)

A few months ago, I brought home a stuffed aligator from Tunica County, Mississippi. Ann and G both like him. This was only the 2nd stuffed animal that G has liked - the first being a stuffed rabbit we called (per Calvin & Hobbs), Mr. Bun. Beth has Mr. Bun to Israel.

We decided to call the Alligator, "Wild Allegation" (or Mr. Allegation or just Allegation), because G is reading up on the law. One day, I was holding Allegation and I turned the TV to CNN to watch "Nancy Grace".

"Oh goody, goody", said Allegation, "My favorite Show. I'm so excited."

Must Have This By COB June 13

Yesterday one of my fellow government workers was frantically trying to collect data to meet a management deadline. Her instruction was that the information must be collected and placed in a specific format (an .xls spreadsheet) by close of business (COB) June 13. She spent a good part of the day on this, including getting information by phone from people who were working out of the office and whose's computers wouldn't load the .xls software (and off course loading the information into the .xls sheet). When she sent the information to the source who required the information she received the following auto message,

"I'm out of the office. I'll be back June 26"

Quite a crock.

Home Early after security problem - saw deer

I had to attend a 'training' session at our research office in VA. I tried to get the shuttle at the east side of our building but a security sweep (caused by a suspicious package that turned out to contain a flashlight with extra batteries but was, per the x-ray, thought to be a potential bomb), forced me to use the west side of the west building (we are in a two building complex) where I missed the bus for the research center. I got the next bus and got to the session late but the instructors were understanding about it. One of the other people at the meeting had his car at the research office and I got a ride home.

I invited the person in and we had a couple of beers in the backyard. A deer was there grazing on shrubs when I got to the yard but took off.

Ed Deitch calls

My cousin Ed was in Virginia Beach on a rare out of town trip (he is working 25 hours weeks in retirement). He wanted to know the exit number of the New Hampshire exit on the beltway. While we were talking I checked mapquest, googlemaps and yahoomaps and they all gave the same answer (28). Of course, a few weeks ago I found out that all three (plus MSN maps) still had I-181 marked two months after this road in TN was resigned as I-26.

G finds credit cards; demands favor

I couldn't find my credit cards when I got to the metrorail station Friday June 8. After searching at home for quite a while, G went out to the car and found that I had left the credit card holder between the two front seats. For finding it he demanded to be excused from any work taking out the recycle material or the garbage - I did agree, although I mentioned that he still owed me for scarfing down 10 eggs worth of scrambled eggs in one sitting the other day (he didn't think it was that much). G pointed out that he had done both the recycling and the garbage the previous week (typically, we share this duty) and that, I had missed the trash receptical in two rooms (both of which I consider trivial and G considers worthy of note).

Cool thing at work - Literally

Today I used one of the new ice makers that are in our extended workspace. I actually have access to two of them. The ice makers have an electronic touch-setting for 3 different types of ice and for cool water.

Now all I need is some whiskey, etc.

The Tolkien-Cool Hand Luke Diet

Last night I had a dream that Ann and I were attending a lecture by a Tolkien scholar who was discussing the poorly written scenes and poetry in the works of J R R Tolkien. One scene he was discussing was meal time in an orc encampment. One of the orcs claimed he could eat 50 spoiled eggs and proceeded to do it (this last part is similar to a scene in the movie "Cool Hand Luke" where Paul Newman bets he can eat 50 hard boiled eggs and fails to do it).

Anyway, I couldn't eat anything for breakfast and I doubt I'll be able to eat anything by lunch today.

Discount Kosher Rye

At Shopper's Discount Warehouse today, I purchased several loaves of rye and pumpernickel. It was Shopper's own brand and was Chauf K (about a 40% discount from the name brands Pepperidge Farm and Arnolds). This is also the same store where I've seen stretch limos.

Is the Band a Big Deal?

We had a concert after shabbat. The guitarist Yehuda Katz from the group Reva L'Shevah was in town to attend a Bat Mitzvah. From what we heard, this group is famous and their music is all over Israel. However, the guitarist didn't register on Google or Dogpile and the group only had two hits. Actually the guitarist was accompanied by some local guys and he was pretty good. He also was the Baal Tephila for Shabbat Maariv and Shachrit (both of which lasted longer than normal because his tempo is a bit slow) and he has a good, but not great voice.
