M in Indianapolis - Work again

Sept 27-29 trip to Indianapolis. Mostly good, nice people, accomplished something, away from the HQ. Best news, a powerful lobbying group accepted my Magic Pixie Dust metaphor for a legislative solution to the declining balance in the Highway Trust Fund. Worse moment: I had agreed to substitute as moderator for a panel. One of the panelist had dropped out the week before and another didn't show up so I had a panel with only one panelist.

G Beats a Traffic Ticket- and gets a free professional photo

Back in July, G was cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic (he didn't tell us until today). Today he went to trial and beat the charge. He says the citation was bogus because there wasn't any oncoming traffic. He says the car he 'failed to yield to' was turning left (as was he) and thus neither car needed to yield. The policeman who issued the citation was there at court but basically said that he couldn't remember the situation well.

G dressed up for his court appearance (and got a shave) but this was also for his U of Md photo that was taken today. In the past, not enough people paid for a picture so the U told everyone that this year it would added to the yearbook for free- possibly they can now get companies to advertise on the graduation publication (but there was still a charge to get a stand alone copy).

A Great New RHashana Minhag

Someone who lives on the to/from path from Beth Sholom to the creek where people do Tashlich set up a station where people could have a shot of whiskey either on the way to, or more likely, the way back.

What a great minhag. Of course I forgot his name.

Trina Cat Comes to Post Oak

On the 18th, Ann and George picked up our new cat (a grey tabby) from the Humane Society. The Society was going to inspect our house and give us an extended interview to determine our worthiness for cat ownership. However, because we had adopted a cat from the Society back in 1996 and because the vetenarian vouched for the condition of the cat, they decided we didn't need either the interview or the inspection. We have until tomorrow to get her spaded. We named the cat (about 5 months old) after an animal rights friend of ours who died a few months ago.

Trina is getting along pretty well with Soda (our orange tabby) but sometimes annoys him by wanting to play with his tail when he is eating. She uses the box well and is pretty affectionate.

M in Selma Alabama - again

I've probably been to Alabama 5-10 times over the past 30 years; but I had only visited Selma once before.

This time I had a bit more time. The hotel where we had a meeting was the St James hotel which is near where US 80 crosses the Alabama River. Jesse James once stayed at the hotel which was built in the 1800s. It has 4 stories of rooms overlooking a central courtyard. The courtyard has banana trees with real bananas. In the back of the hotel the rooms overlook the Alabama River. There is a veranda up to the bank of the river. The riverbank is overgrown with honeysuckle plants which have a very nice aroma. It was in the low 80s when I was there and there were huge dragonflys buzzing around over the honeysuckles.

I also took a little walk down Martin Luther King Blvd (which begins, oddly enough, at Jeff Davis Highway). It has the Baptist and AME churches which provided most of the people for the 1964 march from Selma to Montgomery (about 30 miles).

On the way home, I had a fellow airplane passenger sit near me. He initially started talking politics and Nostradamos but when I corrected some of his facts and pointed out that predictions that you can't understand before the fact are pretty useless, he began talking about his life. He had gotten into drugs, spent time in jail and juvenile detention centers and his father had died 3 months earlier (all in NH where he lived). Evidently he had gotten a job in construction and was doing better. He had borrowed money a visited his mom in Alabama.

I tried to tell him that saving money should be way easier than quitting drugs and that he should try to save some money every week. He asked for some pointers. I said maybe you shouldn't go out on the town with your friends except once a week or so and maybe you should buy food at groceries rather than fast food.

Who knows what will happen.

Bad Day for the Home Team in MLB

Home teams in MLB were 4-13 yesterday. Bad but not historically bad. However, it gets worse. Three home teams were shut out by 9 or more runs (first time ever in MLB history). In addition in two other games the home team was blown out.

Fifth Anniversary of the 9-11 Atrocities

One way 9-11 has changed me is that every chance I get, I call it the 9-11 atrocities. Another way it has changed me is that I now a lot more about Islam. My knowledge has it impossible to take at face value many of the things people say about events or anything else related to Islam.

Marion Barry Embellishes His Record

Ex Mayor, convicted drug possesor, convicted tax evader, oft cited for minor offenses and admitted adulter Marion Barry was cited during the wee hours (1230am) Sept 10 for running a red light at 16th and H and refusing to take a urinanalysis test for alcohol. Both offenses are non criminal. He was cited for a minor traffic offense in May a few blocks away.

West Nile Flu - Human Case

The first confirmed Human case of west nile flu in Virginia was found in Fairfax county. The case was non fatal. The authorities said that the flu was spreading fast and they expected as many as 2 other cases this year.

Anchor - "As an expert, would you say its time to panic, Bill."

Expert - "Yes I would Pat."

M in Wisconsin

Annual Sheepshead Tournament and tourism festival was in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin this year (Sept 1-4). Gerry Berg was on both Midwest flights to and from National Airport (and Midwest is a nice airline to take; seats are more comfortable than most airlines).

We didn't have many hands played. A number of the Wisconsonites couldn't attend and we forgot to invite the Chicago contingent in time. This puts in the concept of an 'annual' affair in jeopardy.

Both Milwaukee and Madison are upgrading. Milwaukee has a nice riverwalk along the Milwaukee river and there are many new buildings in Madison and other upgrades (the boat house near the lakefront dorms was a tent when I was there; now its a 40' high fixed structure with nice amenities).
