End of the summer Acclimation

So it was 90F today (68F dew point; 93F heat index) and I went for a walk at lunch and it felt reasonably nice, expecially as we had a decent wind out of the WNW. (although had I walked fast or for a long time I probably wouldn't have felt as good).

Thus it seems that my body has finally acclimated itself to summer temperatures.

Just a summer is ending.

M in Ohio - A Wifi experience

I had a 3 day trip to Columbus, OH this week (Aug 21-23). I had to give a 'pic picture' type presentation rather than a technical one. I can't remember having to do this before. The presentation went well as I got to try out some moveable clip art and the art did move. More interesting was that the Holiday Inn where the meeting was had wifi and I only had a cableready laptop from my office. The motel actually had an adapter that they let me use for free. The first adapter had a broken element so they even loaned me a second one (which worked).

Another MLB first involving lead off homers

The White Sox beat KC in Chicago by a 5-4 score which seems fairly routine and non consequential. However, there were 4 lead off HRs in the first two innings; a first in MLB.

David DeJesus hit the first pitch of the game for a homer (for the Royals).

Pablo Ozuna hit a HR to lead off the the bottom of the first (for the White Sox)

Emil Brown hit a HR to lead off the top of the second

and Jermaine Dye hit a HR to lead off the bottom of the second.

Two 18 inning games in one day

Chicago (Cubs) beat Houston 8-6 in 18 inning in Houston August 15th. Teams combined 18 pitchers.

Later that evening, Arizona beat Colorado 2-1 in Colorado.

It was the first time two 18 inning games had ever been played in one day. The stupidest moment was when the manager of Houston said, ''We normally win 18-inning games here."

Home from Week in New England

Ann was in Boston April 4-6 for an ORT convention. I flew to Boston on the 6th and picked her up and we toured New England.

Some highlights and lowlights

April 6: Wait for ATrans baggage at Logan was 1.5 hours; flight was only 1 hour
April 6: visit with Paul and Miriam Gilman
April 7: visited Darmouth area of New Hampshire with friends in the transportation analysis business
April 7: visited two breweries in one day (Harpoon and Magic Hat)
April 7: an evening beer at the shore of Lake Champlain turns a 'run from the rain shower' then back out when the shower ends
April 8: near perfect day for a visit to the top of Mt Washington; visibility of 50-100 miles for all 360 degrees, wind only about 30 mph, temp about 40F, then saw a black bear crossing the street in a commercial/residential area
April 9: Temp down to low 40s in Berlin, NH. Bangor Maine. Kosher deli doing pretty well. Nice resort area to the east in Lucerne a Maine
April 10: Visit to Boothbay. Very pleasant, very Annapolis like.
April 11: Arrive in Portland, nice but busy waterfront, supper with Chabad
April 12: Lunch and Suddah Shelishit w Chabad of Portland (who claim that L'Chaim stands for Lubavitch Chabad Activities in Maine).
April 13: No real problems at airport despite increased security
