But the Good News is: I've saved a bunch of money on car insurance

George sent me a Good News/Bad News message. The bad news was his plan to save money on the phone bill by abandoning the long distance option on the land line wasn't going to work. The good news was the large savings possible by increasing the deductible on the more expensive of our two cars (about $270/year).
Calling the insurance company (USAA), I used the good news line. Of course they dislike any reference to the rival insurance company (GEICO).
While on the line with USAA, they said they could probably get me a good auto rental rate (for our trip to New England in a week). I didn't believe it but actually the weekly USAA rate at Budget beat the weekly Orbitz rate at Thrifty by about $100.

Orioles Lose Despite 9 run Inning

Tampa Bay 13- Balt 12. Tampa Bay scored 10 runs in the 5th and 3 in the 6th to take a 13-3 lead but the Orioles came back with 9 in the top of the 7th. It was the first time since 1933 that both teams scored 9 or more runnings in an inning since June 3, 1933, when the New York Yankees scored 10 in one inning and the Philadelphia Athletics scored 11. During the game Carl Crawford of Tampa Bay hit his 10th triple and now has 10 or more triples and 10 or more homers in each of the past 3 years.

Eight Car Train on the Metrorail

Today, for the ride from Galley Place to White Flint on the red line, I got a train with 8 cars. The first time this has happened. Despite the fact that it was the peak of peak hour, there was no standing, at least in the car that I was in - which was at the DC end of the train. I noticed that in some stations, the back of the car was almost at the end of the loading platform - a tight fit indeed. Also, because of weather conditions, the ride on didn't charge a fare and... both the metrorail and the Ride On were actually on time.

Visitors Again - for Memorial Service

No Pennies for Ride On

On the way home on July 14, after I debarked from the metrorail, I tried to pay for the ride-on bus with a transfer slip, a quarter, a nickel and 5 pennies. The pennies came out of the machine. They don't take them anymore - even though you have to have exact change (or a pass card or some similar device).

M in LaJolla (San Diego)

July 9-11, M was in LaJolla for a meeting. Beautiful landscaped gardens. Nice weather (although the natives complained because the temperature got to about 80F and the humidity was higher than they were used to. There was a golf tournament at the course next to the hotel where the meetings took place. I was in a satellite hotel a few miles away which was not as nice but they did have free beer on tap (Miller's lite) on Monday 5:30-7:00 pm or so.

On the flight back the pilot took the place a few miles out into the pacific then turned around. It was a really spactacular view of San Diego harbor and vicinity.

Cleveland Wins big vs NY

Cleveland beat the Yankees 19-1 on July 4 (it was the Yankee owner's 76th birthday). This was the third time that Cleveland has beaten the Yankees by 18 or more runs since 1928 and the only times the Yankees had lost by this amount since 1925.

Cleveland 24 NYY 6 in June 1928
Cleveland 22 NYY0 in August 2004.

The previous non Cleveland loss of this magnitude was

Detroit 19 NYY 1 in June 1925.

G To NY via College Park and Philadelphia

G was invited to a wedding July 3 in Brooklyn, NY. Apparently, there were a few others he knew who wanted to go. He picked up one person in College Park and another in Philadelphia and stayed there the night of July 2. He got home about 4 am July 4th quite beat up and didn't get to sleep until about 8am. He seems disinclined to do this again.
