Azalia Drive

Ann's birthday. We drove through some of the older neighborhoods where the Azalia bushes have had time to grow. In some of the neighborhoods it was common to see 4 or even 5 colors of azalias in front of homes. Also got a take out at Siena's.

G sees Coyote Again

Back on Mar 15, G saw a Coyote in College Park. He saw another one, or possibly the same one; also in College Park.

A '94' on an Exam and an Unusual Offer

Passover gobbled up four weekdays this year (Apr 13, 14, 19 and 20). George missed a number of classes and had to cram pretty hard for a exam on April 25. He received a call from the Professor on April 26 advising him that he had received a '94' on the exam. This score, makes it likely, but not certain, that he will get an "A" in the course (it has to do with the functioning of the Court system - sort of a pre-law type course).

George and the professor discussed it briefly, then the professor said, “I have a special for you this week. I'll wave the final and guarantee an A if you CONVERT TO CHRISTIANITY!!!”

It was, in effect, a compliment. The professor meant to say he was impressed by the religious devotion shown by orthodox jewish students who not only stayed true to belief but also tried very hard to (and frequently did) catch up the coursework.

When G told me the professor's comment, it took me about a whole minute to stop laughing.

But I Parked for Free At Dulles

Beth left her laptop computer at the Transportation Security Administration inspection station on Apr 24. She called later that day and I gave her the TSA lost and found phone number at Dulles. Eventually they set it aside and I picked it up on Apr 25. A lot of trouble but they had some reserved spaces at the office building across the street from the Dulles Marriot and I parked for free since I was on "official TSA business".

5 HRs in an Inning - Cincinnati a preferred victim?

The Milw Brewers hit 5 HRs in the 4th inning in an 11-0 defeat of the Cincinnati Reds on april 22 The previous clubs to do this were:
Minn vs. KC, June 9, 1966
SF vs Cincinnati, 1961
Phil vs Cincinnati, 1949
NY Giants vs Cincinnati 1939.

Oddly enough, the next day (Apr 23), Cincinnati beat the Brewers 11-0.

Good hit bad pitch Pitcher

Livan Hernandez was the starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals on April 19 in a game against Philadelphia. Nothing unusual there. The final score was Phil 7, Washington 6. Also nothing unusual. Hernandex pitched 7 and a third innings and gave up 6 runs. Not so unusual either. Washington did outhit Phil 14-9 while losing 6-7 but that's not so unusual.

The unusual thing was that Hernandez had three extra base hits in a game (two doubles and a homer). Most pitchers (even in the NL where they don't have a DH) won't have three extra base hits in a season.

As of the end of the game, Hernandez's BA was .400

Two triples - one inning - one batter

Corey Sullivan (Colorado) hit two triples in the 5th inning at San Diego in a Rockies 10-4 victory over the Padres. This was the first time that had been done in 55 years. The previous occasion was Gil Coan of the Washington Senators who did it Apr 21, 1951 (on my 1st birthday). It was done 10 times before that but a lot of that was in the days of ball parks with odd dimensions.

Beth Arrives for visit

April 5 I picked up Beth at DCA. She had a flgt to atlanta on April 1 and stayed with her grandmother a bit. On the way to the house we went down some of the streets with Cherry blossoms on both sides. The blossoms were just beginning to fall so they were swirling a bit in the air.

You too can change history

I went to the Clinton Centerm a second time.
On March 28, he day before the conference opened we had a tour of the Clinton Presidential Library and a reception at another building in the Library complex. Among the things I learned was that the long oval table where the cabinet sits is too small for all the cabinet officials. Several cabinet level officials sat in corners. One was the Secretary of Transportation (whom I work for), another the OMB director, another the delegate to the UN, the last I forgot. I asked someone who seemed like they might know something,

M - "So was the cabinet room an accurate representation of the way the seating at and around the table existed during the Clinton Administration.

Official - "Well you have to understand the room is a replica."

M - "That's not what I asked. Let me try again. Is the seating at the cabinet table the same as during actual cabinet meetings?"

Official - "As I said, the table is a reproduction."

M - "Let me try again. Did the Secretary of Transportation have to sit in the corner of the room away from the table. I don't care whether the table is or isn't an original."

Official - "Give me your business card, we'll look it up and get back to you. (they haven't as of April 15 and I sent another inquiry off"

However, the next week, April 3 there was another reception, this time in the reception hall of the Clinton Center. I went to the cabinet room and the museum personnel had moved the Secretary of Transportation's chair to the table.

International Conference

M was in charge of an international conference last week (March 28-31) and was working hard on last minute stuff over the end of March. It turned out nicely. The web site for the conference is at:

http://www.ted2006-littlerock.org/about.html

This was the third conference of its type and we had great attendance, great international support, great support from the State of AR highway department, financial support from about 2 dozen organizations and some good plenary session speakers. Unfortunately we were only able to advance the 'science' of the field a little bit because we don't yet have a universal terminology and conception framework but generally everybody seemed to be very pleased.

The day before the conference opened we had a tour of the Clinton Presidential Library and a reception at another building in the Library complex. Among the things I learned was that the long oval table where the cabinet sits is too small for all the cabinet officials. Several cabinet level officials sat in corners. One was the Secretary of Transportation (whom I work for), another the OMB director, another the delegate to the UN, the last I forgot. There was a very cheap table with nice stoneware (with presidential emblem) and glassware and tableware on an upper floor. The table was in a display which discussed some of the important State level dinners. The table had spindly legs and the chairs around it were crowed together and had low small seats. I asked whether the table was authentic White House equipment but didn't get an answer. There wasn't a single reference to highways or transportation that I could find. There were many references to Elvis and other 'cultural' facts.

Weekend in Little Rock

M was in Little Rock, AR on Mrch 31-Apr 2. Stayed with the Rabbi of a Synagogue. He was the Jewish Chaplain of Ft Belvoir back in 92-94. Interesting floor plan. There is a men's section, a woman's section and a mixed section.

Eastern Drought

National Airport had only 0.05" of precip during March. This was far less than the previous record low of about 0.5". Somehow, the Cherry Blossoms came out on time anyway and were pretty good (although I only saw them on TV).
