Jets sort of Bookend Monday night on ABC

The NE Patriots beat the NY Jets 31-21 yesterday on the last game of Monday night football on ABC. This broadcast began over 36 years earlier (sept 21 1970) when the Jets lost 31-21 to Cleveland. In the 2005 game, the 2 QBs at the end were the Jets Vince Testaverde (42) and the Patriots Doug Flutie (43).

Shaftkoft Game

Nice game played at Dave & Buster's in White Flint Mall. Arthur (back from trip # 11 to Romania and in trip #11 his plane was hit by lightening and made an emergency landing at Logan Airport), Rich W (1st time in several years), Walrus, Robear and myself. Arthur won with +49 (he had 8 successful picks, won three leasters and was partner 5 times on successful picks). Most interesting hand was a leaster in which Walrus won the first two tricks with a nine and both tricks had a bonus card from the blind.

I related the new all purpose response I heard, "You're not seeing the big picture" (you can use it when someone makes a good point and you don't have an immediate factual response). Also, the expression for noting a co worker who has suddenly turned nasty - "taking a ride on the bi polar express"

Rationalization of the Inconvenient by Ann

We were in a parking lot on Dec 26, bringing some items from my brother's car to our car (after lunch at a restaurant in Wheaton). Ann recognized our car because the left rear view mirror support is white even though the car is maroon (this because I didn't feel like shelling out $90 more when a company had to replace it after an accident George had parallel parking in SE DC). Ann said, "you know, in a way its nice to have that white mirror support because we can always find our car."

Lots of Kin Meetings

Last night Allan Deitch and Juliana visited us; Juliana is thinking of attending the U of Md. (she also is a fan of the Dumbledore isn't dead theory at: http://www.dumbledoreisnotdead.com/). We had latkas and lasagne. Alan corrected some of the details of a story I had about how he survived having his office abolished by the Gov (the office was re-funded by the Legislature and he wound up with a promotion and got to keep the severance pay). Today, we will meet Irwin and Cheryl in Wheaton and then visit Elliot and Judy Cohen (his father married a Deitch) elsewhere in Wheaton.

Only 7 months late on Taxes

Today, I completed a form 1040 amended return for tax year 2004. I had made a minor mistake and will have to pay about $150 more in taxes. It is really difficult to get motivated to pay taxes. Really. Really.

Keys and Dinosaurs

Beth had sent word from Jerusalem that she had lost her keys on public transit and was able to recover them because the transit personnel noticed the odd stuff attached to her key ring. So today, I took home 4 dinosaur erasers I had at work and began tieing them to the 4 car keys we have. George saw me doing this.

G - What in h... are you doing?

M - I'm putting dinosaurs on the key rings.

G - (sarcastically) Oh. I should have known.

A Simple but very effective idea - G

We've been having a problem in our main computer room. The chairs keep wearing out (we were on our third as of last week). G suggested we move Beth's old computer chair to the main room. Simple - Effective.

Four Years = Four Years + 6 months

Our garbage disposal (a PRO333-6) went out. We was manufactured in Oct 2001. It came with a 4 year warranty and we don't have the receipt. The company said that they use a 6 month role and figure that the time between manufacturing and installation is 6 months so the warrenty is actually good until April 2006. The service visit is scheduled for next week. If they feel the problem is a non manufactured one, it will cost us anyway.

"He's putting a potato in a light socket"

One of the kitchen lights broke. Actually the base broke off in the socket. A fellow who stays here some evenings (he lives in Balt but works near us) said that some people use a potato to grip the metal base. I started doing that.

"Martin, could you come upstairs?" called Ann from her room.

"He's putting a potato in a light socket." called up George.

I had some explaining to do.

Losing 100-6

Colorado lost to Nebraska 30-3 (college football) the last week in Nov and 70-3 to Texas the first week in December (Colorado was 7-3 going into the Nebraska game). The loss to Texas could have been bigger because Texas led 63-3 early in the 3rd period and by 70-3 at the end of the 3rd period -- they put in 3rd stringers after this) Despite this, Colorado will actually go to a bowl game against Clemson U (both teams are CU).

Purdue Mashed then triumph.

In NCAA men's division 1 on Nov 29, Purdue U lost to Florida State University 97-57 (at the half it was 58-23 and Purdue committed 28 turnovers total). The next day (Nov 30) the Purdue woman's div 1 team beat Arkansas State Univ 95-58. In that game, Purdue led 62-25 at the half.
