Hat lost; Hat found: Hat bought & good bargains.

I came home from services on Simhat Torah and put my hat somewhere. It took me 5 days to find it possibly because the cat moved it. In the meantime, I bought George a new rainproof hat (green to go with his jacket) which I got at Goodwill for $1.98.

Also, today we bought some eggs at $0.68 a dozen which is about the same price as 20 years ago as I recall. Also, I got $10 of free cachew nuts at CVS (instant coupon thingy).

Also, I thought I had lost a metrofare card with $30+ on it but I had left it at work. Still I had to blow $5 to buy another card since I was parked in the lot and they only take the automatic card as payment.

The Coincidence World Series

Marcus Bagwell and Lee Thomas (of the Houston Astros and Chicago White Sox) probably won't get much playing time in the Series but

both were born on May 27, 1968

both were drafted in 89

both were MVP in 94

Could be called the "coincidence world series"

Which sounds better than the Lake Michigan to Galveston Bay by way of the Chicago River, Northeast Illinois Canal, Illinois River, Mississippi River and Gulf Coast Intercoastal Waterway series.

E-Mail from an Executive Search Firm

Today I received an e-mail from one of the most prominent executive search firms in the country.

The firm is Korn Ferry (http://www.kornferry.com/). They sent me the position description for a Senior VP job at ICF (a major transportation and energy study contractor).

This is an interesting development. I'll speak with the emailer next week sometime.

MLB Game w some "mosts"

The final game of the Atlanta-Houston LCS was won by Houston. The game lasted 5hours 50 minutes and was 18 innings. Houston, which won, used 23 players (Atlanta used 20). The winning pitcher was 41 year old Roger Clemens. The game winning HR was by utility infielder Chris Burke.

Drought Ends- Big Time

We had almost no rain from about Aug 20 to Oct 6. Since about midday on Oct 6 we've had about 5-9 inches of rain. Some of the precip is the result of a tropical system which came ashore in the southeast on Oct 4. The lawn, which was almost completely brown, is now completely green. However, some plants were lost (at least one small azalea).

Another MLB season ends

The Yankees and Red Sox were tied in wins but the Yanks got the home field advantage and 1st round placement on the 3rd tiebreaker. The Yanks also drew over 4 million.

The Nationals had an 81-81 record which was last in the NL East (four of the five teams in the NL West had losing records and the winner had an 82-80 record). Nats reliever Chad Cordero led the NL with 47 saves. Roger Clemens (age 41) led the Majors in ERA with 1.87.

Union Song recognized.

A friend of G's was with us on Sept 30 and Oct 1. He is a student at the U of Md. He was, at one point, complaining about his duties as a masgiha assistant at Hillel. He believes the assistants are exploited. I started singing a variation of a song from the movie FIST.

Hey let's go down and join the Mashgichim.

Come on down; I'll show you how.

Even though the song didn't have the word "Union" in it and he hadn't heard it before, he recognized right away that it was a Union song.

M in Atlanta

On Sept 29-30, M was in Atlanta for meetings with the State govt and staffers of US Reps and Senators. Unfortunately, the words that Congress put into law don't match the actual intent of the Reps and Senators. Probably more trouble ahead on that plus some groups are already filing nuisance FOIAs. The law has to do with studies on two highway corridors. The most controversial is a corridor from Savannah, GA to Knoxville, TN. The other corridor is from Natchez, MS to Augusta, GA. My boss's boss is going to be ticked off at everything especially the fact that Georgia will ask FHWA to do the study.
