Work Story - They built the wrong Road

I got some email a few weeks ago from an FHWA division office. It contained a revised project application for a grant (sent by the State) we had made in the previous fiscal year for funds Congress had appropriated the year before that. The original Congressional language had a mistake in the language.

I sent back email saying to our FHWA office in the State "do you know why the state sent this in".

The FHWA office sent a message back saying "why do you want to know". I wasn't in so the FHWA office asked my assistance, "why did Marty send us this message?"

My assistant sent back an email that said, "He probably sent the message because he wanted to know."

Well, after a few more messages, the FHWA office today admitted that the locals had built the wrong project (it was only a few hundred thousand dollars). They had to refund the federal share. In order to get the federal share back they will have to build the right project.

Yanks and Bucs - Lots of Runs

In yesterday's game Tampa led 10-2 after 3 and a half innings. The Yanks eventually won the game 20-11. This was similar to a game back in 1999 when Tampa led Cleveland 10-2 before losing 20-11 on May 5, 1999. In the 2005 game, the Yankees had a 13 run 8th inning with a relief pitcher who gave up HRs to 3 people in a row, 4 HRs in total and 9 runs total in 2/3rds of an inning.

Interesting follow up here. In both the 2005 case and the 1999 case, Tampa won the next game by 1-run.

O's and Nationals

For a few weeks now, the Orioles and the Nationals have been leading their respective divisions. Last week I spoke with Irwin about the possibility, almittedly low, that they would meet in the World Series. Who would have thought such a conversation possible at the beginning of the year (both teams won today).

M quoted in the Onion

Of course it is a fake news story in a fake news magazine but its still cool.

http://www.theonion.com/news/index.php?issue=4124

part of the article is below:

------------
PAYNEVILLE, KY—Habitrail For Humanity, the faith-based, non-profit group that builds networks of affordable, transparent-tube housing for needy families, has come under intense criticism for its recent projects in the Payneville area...."This is no way for people to live," said Kentucky Family Outreach coordinator Martin Weiss, speaking Monday in front of a half-constructed, five-story Habitrail outside Payneville. ..."There's certainly a need for charitable organizations that help house the less fortunate," Weiss said. "But helping the needy piece together flimsy plastic tubes and then snapping the door shut after them gives them shelter at the expense of their dignity."...

Pistons come Back

Last night the home team Pistons redeemed themselves with a win over the Spurs (whose top scorer had an injury in the first half and didn't play well in the second half). The first two games, the Pistons scored only 69 and 76 points respectively.

Note: The Spurs ultimately won the series 4-3. San Antonio averaged under 85 points for the 7 games. Detroit averaged under 87. Detroit also only committed 66 turnovers in the 7 games.

G Predicts Michael Jackson Verdict

We were speaking about the case on June 13 and G said he thinks the jury will come in June 13 and that it will be an 'innocent on all counts' verdict. Well, as the paper said on June 14, he was right.

Good News on Cancer

On May 1 (see below), Ann got the word that a biopsy had revealed cancer in her left breast.

Today she had an operation to remove and then reconstruct both breasts. The operation was successful. No cancer in lymph nodes. No invasive cells discovered in breast tissue. Thus, no followup radiation, chemo or tamoxifen. This was a textbook victory for early detection.

M in Las Vegas June 3-6/7

Highlights

Bad Start to the trip because the flight out of National was cancelled. Seems the Captain's chair wasn't working right and they couldn't find the part to fix it. I lodged a protest with the reservations people and when I got back the morning of the 7th, they said the captain was under investigation and may get fired because he shouldn't have even delayed the flight.

We had some nice weather. The wind was too strong but it was cooler than normal for that time in year with max temps in the high 80s. We (Gerry Berg, Dave Kroes, Glenn Kruser) played a lot of cards (sheepshead/shaftkoft) and even taught one of the Wisconsonians to play sheepsfoot (which uses the cards that are not used during sheepshead).

We saw the Red Rock canyon one morning - it was actually somewhat cool. We did two evening shows, Les Folies Bergeres (which means the frolicking sheepardesses) at the Tropicana (it should have been at Paris, Las Vegas) and the SC comedy club which was at the Flamingo. We also so the Star Trek Experience which was at the Hilton a few blocks east of the Stardust where we stayed. This was very cool with Klingon and Borg adventures with holographic effects, tactile probes, etc. On the Monday after the other card players had left, I saw a friend from long ago (Paul Francioli who I knew at the Univ of Nevada, Reno). We ate at a kosher restaurant that had just opened and then had some beer on a hill overlooking the city on the west side of town. The hill is part of Paul's daughter's high school).

Sarcasm Works at Work

G says that I don't document many work stories. That's true. Here is one. I was trying to get another office to chip in some funding to support a conference (I am one of the co-chairs). The previous time we had this conference was 2002 and the other office didn't contribute. This time I had one of the worker bees convinced to help us but his boss basically said, "what's in it for us." I responded that first of all, they owed us because the previous time they not only passed on the financial support but didn't review any of the abstracts or papers or help put together panels. I indicated a few other things then said that if they want to be freeloading parasites again this year they probably could get away with it but I would hold a grudge and would make a point of using the rest room near them so I could try to make them feel guilty each time I saw them. The next day the boss came to my office and promised to provide funding.

Why Is Tony Armas So Important

I was at the baseball game again tonight. I noticed that in left field over the fence they have a big portrait of Tony Armas seemingly pitching from someplace in front of the White House. Not that I have anything against Armas but he's an interesting choice for this honor. He has only been in the league since late in the 1999 season and, because of injuries, he pitched very little in 2003 and 2004. In 2004 his record was 1-2 and he had a 4.88 ERA. Maybe he won some kind of raffle.
