Faux Snow

Today (2/28) the school systems were closed. Our slacker Baltimore office closed about 1000am. They also closed Thursday (2/24) and Friday (2/25) last week. The 'storm' today dumped maybe 3" of snow. The one last week was similarly sized. Very little snow was on the roads. The forecast today was for 6-12". A lot of people stayed away from the office. I had to do some of some other people's work but basically it was quiet and I got some content together for a big uploading to the FHWA public web site and made some progress on some other tasks.

Another Engagement Event

Went to an engagement party today. Lots of nice scotch but I had to drive afterwards. Darn. The father of the bride-to-be is a professor at the U of Md, Simon ben Simon (yes separdic).

Wedding, Shiva Bracha - Groom had a blog

Yesterday, Sunday Feb 20 we went to a wedding. The groom had a blog http://david.zakar.com/.
At the wedding meal, one of the items was a torte with a chocolate shell enclosing a multilayer structure of 3 other kinds of chocolate. The groom, who works in the computer field, has some pretty good dedication to his blog. He actually posted an entry, few than 2 dozen words, after his marriage. Today we were the cosponsors of one of the shiva brachim. I wrote a short intro speech for Ann using info from the groom's blog. Ann made a teriyake salmon dish which got good reviews. The synagogue sisterhood chef (Mrs Murik) made a 6 layer lasagna using three types of cheeses - very very rich. A sephardi family brought rice and an eggplant caciatori dish. Someone down the street brought salad. One family actually had enough pieces for a 26 person meal.

It Ended without Beginning - the 04-05 NHL Season

About two thirds of the games had been missed this season when the owners effectively cancelled the season. The problems started with the owners locking out the players (who were willing to play during contract negotiations). The lockout is 154 days old today. The final salary cap proposed by the league owners was $42.5M, the final proposed by the players union was $49M. Other differences were in similar range. The league commissioner Gary Bettman and president of the players union Bob Goodenow traded faxes and made the content public over the past two weeks. Rumor as of today is that both will be fired.

Frank the Toy Doggie

I was on the Metrorail platform at the Grosvenor station awaiting the train to Shady Grove (some trains stop at Grosvenor, some continue on and the White Flint station where I catch the bus is the next stop beyond Grosvenor). Near me was a nice looking lady who was holding about 4 stuffed animals and who looked like she was having trouble holding all of them. I went over to her and she asked if I thought the next train would go to Shady Grove. I said I thought it would. I said, " I admire all the stuffed animals you have. Did you win them in some game at work?" She said, that she works for a toy company and each of the employees got a lot of them - in fact more than she needed. She then asked, "Would you like one of them." Apparently she was very happy to give one away to someone who admired them. It was a dog with blue eyes. So Ann will call him "Frankie".

Bus Service on Sunday

For the past few weeks, I've seen a bus drive down our street on a Sunday. Since we have never had Sunday service, I thought this might simply be a training exercise. Well today, I saw a passenger get on a bus. Ha. This is the second significant improvement in county services in the past few months. The other was the delivery of new newspaper recycling bins - with big wheels. The capacity of these things is so great that it takes two or three weeks to fill them up.

Great Non Denial Denial by Giambi

Yesterday, NY firstbaseman Jason Giambi and his lawyer held a press conference. Giambi apologized to the fans and confessed his guilt repeatedly but didn't say why he was apologizing or confessing except in ambiguous phrases like "I let you down", "I messed up", etc.

There is a reason for this. Giambi has $82 Million left on his Yankee contract and the Yankees might be able to legally void the contract if Giambi had told the Yankees he wasn't on steroids while he was on steroids.

Also yesterday, Jose Canseco held a press conference. Canseco charged that numerous players had taken steroids with him, that he had injected steroids into Mark McGwire and that the commissioner had asked players to use steroids in order to get fans back after the strike of 94. The general feeling here is that Canseco is imagining things.

New England has won 3 of the past superbowls. All three victories have been by 3 points.
New England 20, St. Louis 17 on Feb. 3, 2002 in New Orleans, LA
New England 32, Carolina 29 on Feb. 1, 2004 in Houston, TX and
New England 24, Philadelphia 21 on Feb. 6, 2005 in Jacksonville, FL
This year, the new Secretary of State, Condolezza Rice said New England would win by 3 points.

Shirt Coordination by Men at Museum

Ann and I were in Baltimore today visiting Cheryl and Irwin. After lunch we visited the Baltimore Museum of Art and had a guided tour of highlights - somewhat ecclectic with pieces in several wings of the museum. In the tour group were four men. All of us just happened to be wearing plaid shirts. I pointed this out before the tour and one of the guys said, "yes, fortunately I got the email instructions this morning (obviously there were no instructions).

Groundhog Booed

After a pretty bad 3 weeks with lots of snow and cold, the Pennsylvania groundhog, whom G and I saw back in the summer of 2003, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow at Gobbler's notch, Pennsylvania. This supposedly means 6 more weeks of winter weather. There was a large crowd and they booed. An article at:
