Yes there is such a thing as a free meal (for George)
While George was at Md yesterday, one person offered to let him use her meal ticket because she thought she would be stuck at the end of the year with left over tickets. I told George he could have offered to buy her a meal if she visited NY (where he is attending YU). He said that would be insincere since she was obviously not going to visit YU but, "if someone offers you something it can't be stealing even if they need it later on".
G gets parking ticket- won't fight it - and succah
George was at the U of Md yesterday. It was 755pm and the sign said "no parking before 800pm". It was raining hard and he figured no parking cop would be out to give last minute tickets in that weather. He was wrong. Ticket will cost $20 (G will pay). Actually he admires the diligence of the parking cops but if it was $50, he would be more angry than admiring.
Also yesterday, before going to the U of Md, G put up the succahk canvas. When I got home I began putting in the electricity and when G got home we finished that and also put in the table and chairs. Today, G is supposed to do the s chach (stuff that goes on top).

George Home
M picked G up today at the Grosvenor metrorail station. He should have arrived yesterday but had trouble with the buses. Today he visited the JTS (like YU except for conservative Jews); then took a 3pm bus out of NY. It was an unmarked bus where you only pay cash ($20 for the NY to DC ride). I want him to do some of the work on the succah but it will likely rain hard tomorrow so he'll have to do the work on Wed.

M in Colorado Springs
Sept 21-24, M was in Colorado Springs (research conf). The first two days were cold and rainy, with temps in the 40s. By the 3rd day, there was snow visible at the higher elevations. Missed an opportunity to go to Pikes Peak on the 3th day. The people that went said they could see Denver clearly from Pikes Peak. Used the song "ghostriders in the sky" in a research presentation, then that evening we had professional entertainment and they used the same song (they also did "rawhide"). Returned to DC about 3pm and had time to get ready for YKippur.
Hurricane Record Tied
Florida is getting its fourth hurricane of the year today. This ties the unwanted record set by Texas in 1884,

Ann's Estimate of our Sins
I was on my way to the Minhah and Tashlisch (on the 16th) and obtained a small bag of bread. Ann said to use the bread from another source because, "we have a lot of sins."

Marion Barry Will be Back
In yesterday's primary, D.C. Democrats nominated, admitted adulterer and convicted cocaine possessor, Marion Barry for a seat on the City Council representing part of Anacostia. Since the Democrats win all the seats east of Rock Creek Park, this assures Barry's election in November.
Barry is now 67 years old and appears frail at campaign events but being elected usually makes him feel powerful and, sadly, when he feels powerful, he sometimes turns to cocaine.

Nice Metrorail Experience
I got to the platform at the Grosvenor station just as a train seemed to have completed its loading. As I walked toward the train, the trainmaster put his head out the window and said, "Do you want me to hold it for you sir?". I said 'Yes' and he did and I boarded. It only saved me about 4 minutes but it was very nice.

Orioles Use 10 Pitchers in 9 inning game
In a game against the Yankees in Baltimore on Sept 12, the Orioles used 10 pitchers. This sets the AL mark. No pitcher lasted more than 3 innings and six pitchers lasted less than one inning. They cumulatively walked 14 (six by the starter who pitched only 1 2/3 innings) and made 214 pitches. The game took 3 hours 55 min. Yanks won 9-7.

KC Scores 26 Runs in doubleheader and splits
The Royals won the opener of a double header 26-5 against Detroit (on 9/9/04) but were shut out in the nightcap. The Royals had 13 men reach base consecutively (in an 11 run 3rd inning). This ties the MLB record. Joe Randa (who formerly played for Detroit) scored 6 runs (2 of them in the 3rd inning) in a game (he also got 6 hits). The g6 in a game scoring total ties the MLB record which was last set by Boston's Spike Owen on August 21, 1986.
Hurricanes Messed Up by Hurricane
The U of Miami (Hurricanes) moved their game from Saturday 9-11 to today. The Dophins moved their game against the Tennessee (Titans) to Saturday from Sunday. The Marlins are planning to play the Expos in Chicago (where the Sox play).
All of this is because of the approach of Hurricane Ivan.

Video of Meeting
I was in charge of the office meeting today. We didn't have our minutes from the previous meeting because the woman who took the minutes left the agency. So instead I showed about 5 minutes of the movie "Bridge on the River Kwai", namely the meeting at which COL Nickolson persuades COL Saito to move the location of the bridge and other matters. Big hit. Everybody thought it was great.
Great Conclusion to the Great Ticket Affair
here was my entry for June 17, 2004
"
G gets parking ticket - will contest it.G was attending an event in College Park Maryland (one of the sheva brachs for a newlywed couple). He and a friend got parking tickets. It turned out a sign, which noted when parking was not permitted) was covered completely by a tree. The person at the house had a digital camera. The College Park police (not the Univ police) will find this ticket contested."
Well today George got the word that the College Park police were dropping the charge. Basically, they lost track of his contesting documents and couldn't schedule a hearing in the time required. I gave Griffengeorge 25 points and George said he had enough to win the Hogwarts cup.
We subsequently (Sept 10) received a computer generated letter from College Park that said his fine was reduced but would double if not paid by Spet 24. The fine was reduced to $0.00 and the doubled amount was (really) calculated to be $0.00.

Club Box seats at Camden Yards
I went to Camden Yards today. We bought tickets just before the game from someone who was selling theirs (we got a big, big discount ). It was in the club box between home and third( 248:CC). There was a dedicated escalator; comfy lounges, no crowds at the concession stands, all kinds of nice decorations, etc. Orioles won 4-1.
Some computer problems
Last week Ann couldn't send a bluemountain e card because our system blocks cookies and bluemountain must have cookies to work. She got some advice and loaded Mozilla to get cookie capability. Unfortunately, a whole lot of stuff came with Mozilla. It took me some time deleting the junk and then Ann had to clean the Yahoo mail.
Fortunately there are other e card companies.

Kevin Brown - Great Pitcher but Stupid and Unlucky
On Sept 3 Kevin Brown of the Yankees might have punched himself out of the pennant race. Brown broke his non-pitching hand when he punched a wall in the clubhouse during New York's 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Brown admitted that this was caused by Supidity. Acquired from Los Angeles last offseason, the oft-injured Brown (10-4) missed seven weeks in June and July with a strained lower back and intestinal parasite. He tweaked his knee while covering first base on an awkward play in the fifth inning , then was hit on the right forearm by Miguel Tejada's RBI single in the sixth.

Cool Summer
There were only 8 days of 90F and above this summer; fewest since 1906 (Dulles had only 6, BWI had 8 also). The average is 26. Each month June-Aug was also wetter than normal. This is the second abnormally cool summer in a row.

Home from NY and PA
Sunday, Aug 29 we went to NY city to take G to Yeshiva Univ (about 240 miles - only major problem was some bumper to bumper traffic on the NJ Turnpike in the vicinity of Trenton). We actually found a place to park pretty quickly. The registration wasn't so quick. Its a very nice campus in a not so fancy part of town (Spanish Harlem). Over the next few days he registered, etc. He is getting to take advanced Aramaic (which he likes a lot).
Ann and I left NYC and went to the Poconos. The next day we drove through some beautiful scenery, went to the Asa Packer mansion. The mansion has the world's only working orchestral (which is like a 5 piece player piano). The only other one is in the Smithsonian. Mr. Packer made his fortune in the RR biz. We got some great mountainside views, then took the Harrisburg to Fredrick to Rockville route home (about 600 mile total driving).
Cleveland 22 New York 0
In New York, Cleveland scored 6 runs in the top of the 9th - guess they thought a 16 run lead wasn't that safe. It was the worst loss in Yankee history (they had lost by 18 runs- 24-6 at Cleveland on July 29, 1928 and 19-1 at home vs Detroit on June 17, 1925. The biggest shutout loss was 15-0 at home vs Chi on May 4, 1950. From a Cleveland perspective it tied the major league record for a shutout win since 1900. Pitts vs Chi Sept 16, 1975 was the previous 22-0 game.
