G's Opera plot

George was at the McKeldin Library today. He lost his wallet. He called me and I cancelled the credit card. Then he found the wallet.

It reminds me of the opera plot: Boy meets wallet, boy falls in love with wallet, boy loses wallet, boy gets wallet back (except in the opera 'girl' replaces 'wallet'.)

M in Utah

On Sunday Huly 24, M went to a resort near Park City Utah for a meeting. Returned Wed July 28. Saw a double rainbow on July 25 around 8pm. Park City is in a valley surrounded by ski resorts. The city has numerous art stores, restaurants, nick nacks, etc. I saw an advertisement for a lot only about 1000 sq ft - it was for $160,000. It was about 2 blocks north of the retail district, which I suppose is to continue expanding. Two bedroom, two bathroom condos were going for $900,000.

G's mishap

G took Ann to USPS office to day to mail something. He thought he could use an 'express mail' envelop (they are free) for regular 1st class mail by just crossing off the 'expressmail' logo.

He had to buy a generic envelop for $1.

He told me the story,

M - oh, well another day, another disaster

G - that's unfair - you can't call a $1 mishap a disaster

M - Ok, another day another mishap following the 3 disaster day

Of course, to be fair, G has done a lot of work here lately. Not just taking Ann places, but upgrading the computer, etc.

G back from NY/NJ

George had some transportation problems on his way back.

Problem #1 - at the NJTransit station in S. Orange, he was using the autofare machine and bought $32 in parking tokens instead of fare back to lower Manhattan.

Problem #2 - He then got to lower Manhattan too late to get the bus back to the DC area.

Problem #3 - He then bought an Amtrak ticket back to DC from an autofare machine. He bought the $150 ticket for the express train but then boarded a local train (for which the fare would have been $92).

G in NY and NJ

George arrived in lower Manhattan on the 14th. He was supposed to stay on the bus until it got to midtown but didn't and was late to an appointment in upper Manhattan. He had a nice time though,  a successful interview with Yeshiva U., and a nice shabbath with a family in NJ. Here is a great George quote,

"Manhattan is not so much multicultural as it is multispecies."

Beth in Israel; George to New York

Received a call from Beth in Israel. Everything fine. Her arrival was greeted by the Prime Minister and Finance Minister (actually they greeting the plane which was full of new emigrants). Her dorm is nice and uncrowded for now. They divided people by interest and she is in a non-smoker, non elderly, sabbath observant section. Food good.

George took the Ivy bus line today. Round trip from downtown Rockville, Md to Madison Square Garden, NY is $35. He is visiting people and also being interviewed by Yeshiva Univ.

Beth to Israel

Beth left for Israel today. She took two 70 lb suitcases. We took some photos at the airport. News reports are that some high level govt officials will meet her at Lod (aka Ben Gurion) airport.

Back from Atlanta

We got to BWI late on the 8th. We took the super shuttle home and arrived about 1230am on the 9th. This despite the fact that we were the first to be dropped off. The super shuttle has a lounge now and strives to full each shuttle with a full load. This required us to wait at the airport for about 45 minutes or so.

On the 9th we had a long walk to someone's house for supper and on the 10th a shorter walk to someone's house for lunch. So Ann didn't have to cook at all for Sabbath.

In Atlanta

We went to the Margaret Mitchell museum. Ann had wanted to go since the museum opened in 1999. The ob/gyn who delivered Ann was related to Margaret Mitchell's first husband (Red Upshaw) who was a model for Red Butler (he was into bootlegging, drinking, patronizing the brothels, etc.). Ann's father, Jay, was a pharmicist in Atlanta and had Margaret Mitchell as one of his customers. Jay and Kathyleen had purchased a first run of "Gone with the Wind" and could easily have had Margaret Mitchell sign it (they had discussed it at home), but didn't get around to it when Margaret died in 1949.

We also went to The Broadway Cafe. This place has changed from a vegetarian only to a two restaurant in one format- half vegetarian, half meat. At the restaurant we saw Marge and Beryl Diamond and their daughter (who is going to attend Oglethorpe and study Veternary Medicine). We also saw there Craig Barcroft. We also went to a cocktail hour at one of Kathyleen's friends, Marie Lanham.

To Atlanta

Up early. Got a 7am flight from BWI to Atlanta. Flight OK except a rough landing - one tire then the other - a bit of rocking- Ann said it was a woman pilot - it was-

Got to Ann's mom's place about 1030am. She was on the way to her Tai Chi class.

Got Ann's mom's computer to recognize this blog and the Weissfamilysummary as favorites on Explorer.

Pen and Ink on the Credit Card Scanner

The previous time I was at the grocery store, I told them they needed to relable some of the button alternatives on the credit card scanner. The clerk said, "but we can't do that because we can't get replacement button labels." I said, "so write the words on a stickum label and place it where the replacement button labels should go."

Today, I notice they had done exactly that.

Warmer - Company for Supper; Lunch at Simons

We had 3 people as guests on July 2. Two stayed over and all six of us went to the Simons for lunch on July 3. The Simons have a dog but they didn't trust him to be gentle with us. Mrs Simon had a tumaric sauce on the fish sausages. Ann intends to try it.
