New TV stand, etc.

Beth had purchased a new TV stand about 3 months ago. It finally came in to the store and it got home today.

Also today, I used the metropass 'smartcard' for the first time. It took maybe two seconds off my trip - big deal - but now you have to use a smartcard to get out of the metrorail park and ride lot. They also raised the cost of the parking to $4. Although it is still free to park if you leave after 1000pm, I'm sure that the day is coming when that will change.

Beth's coworker, who had recently changed a florescent light for her, died over the weekend (Beth found out about it today). Seems to have been a heart attack while being treated for a gallstone.

Critters.

I've noticed that many of the trees, notably the Oaks, have the end of each branch brown. This is because that's where the cicada's laid their eggs. Some trees seem much less affected but pieces of oak branch are lying all over the yard.

Speaking of the yard, the last two times outside in the midday or evening, I've been bit by something. The critter bit me right thru my socks. Strangely, the critters, which must be quite small to be able to do this, don't come through the screen door. I've heard the critters sense people's body heat so they have to be very close to a person.

As last year, a lot of the day lillies in the front have been bitten off at the top, most likely by deer. Its not quite as bad as last year --- yet.

Beth home from NY; Visitor from NJ

Beth was in NY June 24-27. She came home today. Apparently, a lot of people were walking around Central Park Saturday (June 26) which was an even better day there than here. After she got to DC she went to a meeting at a hotel and then home.

We have a visitor named Deena Adams the next few days. She is visiting her grandmother Sonya Bellak who lives in Ring House. She brought us some gifts and will be staying in G's room while G sleeps downstairs.

Speaking of G. He in stalled some (free) software today which automatically upgrades our wireless router. The breakdown in the router had been plaguing us last year. We kept bringing in the router to exchange it but it turned out that routers need to have their software refreshed. Who knew.

Foggy Bottom Ale; deer; beth

On the way to work I shared the bus with Beth who was going to catch the Asian express to NY ($40 round trip bus which goes Chinatown to Chinatown). We saw a dead deer on the westbound lanes of Montrose.

After work I met my cousin Al Deitch at Kramerbooks near DuPont circle. It has a bar and grill attached to the book store. We split a pitcher of Foggy Bottom Ale - a dark smooth lager.

Amazing Coincidence

I was having a meeting with some consultants. They were briefing me on their project (the Washington Gateway project which includes a transportation component but also other components, e.g. a baseball stadium). We had a fire drill. I took them to our fire drill muster station (I was required to report there to the fire drill coordinator). It turns out the muster station overlooks the site of the Washington Gateway.

Tv Series in Reverse and Organizing the Freezer

I was home yesterday (RDO). I watched the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (4pm to 5pm) followed by series premiere (5pm to 6pm). Very Cool. I had popcorn and ice cream. The special effects obviously got better as the series went on. The vampire poofing in the premiere is poorly done. However, the writing got worse; the characters got less compelling and Buffy was much cuter in the premiere.

Earlier that day I went shopping for Ann. A schizoid gave me a big lecture in the Shopper's Food Warehouse parking lot about how the grocery carts should be better managed and said it was all Bush's fault (really).

At home I rearranged the downstairs freezer. Bread now in brown plastic bags (bread - brown - get it), fish in white plastic bags (because a lot of the fish are Whitings).

People visiting and unusual weather

Had Sophia (friend of Beth) staying with us this shabbath. Also two people visited today, one for lunch, one afterwards.

Yesterday was abnormally cool in the west. Cheyenne, WY had a max of 46F, Denver, CO and Scottsbluff, NE had a max about 50F. All about 30-35 degrees below normal. Tonight there are frost warnings for northern PA.

G gets parking ticket - will contest it.

G was attending an event in College Park Maryland (one of the sheva brachs for a newlywed couple). He and a friend got parking tickets. It turned out a sign, which noted when parking was not permitted) was covered completely by a tree. The person at the house had a digital camera. The College Park police (not the Univ police) will find this ticket contested.

M in Puerto Rico

M was in Puerto Rico June 8-11. Got back after midnight on the 12th. There was a Chabad minyon only 4 blocks from the hotel for Shabbat. Rabbi's first name was Mendel. We had various receptions and every time we went somewhere by van we had a police escort. On the way back the plane I was supposed to take was stuck in Antigua so I took a flight to BWI instead of the one I was suppose to take (to Dulles). The fellow sitting next to me on the plane was in a similar situation and also lives near me in Potomac. We got a free taxi to Dulles (from BWI) and he gave me a ride home from there.

On the 13th I cooked some Plantains that G had purchased by mistake. I made them as part of a stew.

While I was out of town. Beth had three friends over Fri night and on Saturday two families came by for dessert.

Car Dialogue

M - I noticed you took the old car Saturday night. I was worried.

G - Would you have worried if you took it.

M - Not as much.

G - Why is that? Do you think its more likely to have a mechanical when I'm driving it?

M - Yes

Almost Beshert at Staples

About four days ago Ann got a $10 certificate for printing at Staples. We had previously scheduled a trip to Balt to, among other things, borrow a book Ann wanted to photocopy.

Ann commented that it was beshert (cosmically intended) that we scheduled this because of the certificate. It turned out however that the entire photocopying took only about $7 and they wouldn't take the card.

We also visited Irwin and Cheryl (and Sasha) on the trip, also had lunch with them and Beth (who was in Balt for a wedding) and also visited the Glickmans (old friends from Balt).

Franco's Slam and G's conversation

Julio Franco (of Atl.) hit a grand slam HR yesterday vs. Phil in the 1st inning. He was 45. The oldest player to hit a grand slam previously was Carlton Fisk at 43 (in 1991).

On the way to pick up the car from a new battery and battery cable job (we needed station to check on other things, like alternator), this conversation:

G- So I was eating supper with a girl at a restaurant and she wants me to read "Catcher in the Rye". I started reading it two years ago and didn't like it.

M - So are you going to read it?

G- No. I'll read the Spark Notes on it.

M - Interesting approach. Does this girl read The Weiss Chronicles (i.e., http://weisschronicles.blogspot.com/)?

Orioles; trip to Colorado; dialog w George

May 25-27, the Orioles lost 3 games to the Yankees and gave up 43 runs. More interesting, in each game, there was an inning in which at least 10 Yankees came to the plate. As of June 1, the Orioles have had at least 13 hits in each of the past 7 games but their record is 2-5 because of bad pitching.

May 28-31 M was in Colorado. We had 6 sheephead players for one evening - but played 5 handed with the dealer sitting out. We played over 50 hands including one at 11,900 ft in elevation in the snow (Rocklin picked, Kroes was partner and they made Schwartz). Kroes had the most cumulative points. Berg 2nd. Berg was partner on a Kroes pick that was a recrack win. Had Berg not recracked, he would have been the cumulative winner. I won the most separate games. Trip to Coors brewery was nice, also trip to Georgetown and to the Garden of the Gods and AF Academy (all had nice visitor centers).

June 1. George and I went to see "Mean Girls". Earlier that day the Toyota had not started (and wouldn't hold a charge) and G had it towed to a service station.
G - I signed your name on the station service form.
M - Very Good.
G - OK, let's try that again, I signed your name on the station service form.
M - Well, OK, I guess you had to.
