Another Snakefish Found
A 19" snakefish was found in a pond in the Wheaton Regional Park. The pond empties into Rock Creek which empties into the Annacostia which empties into the Potomac. Steel grid was placed at the egress from the pond and the pond will be drained today. It is not spawning season so people think the danger may not be great.

Planted stuff
Planted 12 daisies and 6 delphinians. I had some difficulty figuring out which way was up on the delphians. Hope I got it right. It was cool for the end of April. Low was in the 30s and midday temps were in the mid 50s.

Spring Duties
Well all 7 of my Jupiter Tulips have been attacked by squirrels and the bloom bit off. I'm getting a shipment of Daisies (or maybe Poppies I forget) and some other flowers today.
While in MT, I noticed a number of weather stations have record high maximum temperatures today and are predicting snow tomorrow.

Coincidence or Destiny
Last week Ann and I had decided to get an underpining for the Florida room we had built back in 2001. The old 800 number (for the marketing & construction - not the manufacturer of the material) we had didn't work. Other numbers didn't work. I got a call today from some fellow who had purchased the company - connection reestablished.

End of a Baseball Streak
Barry Bond's 7 game streak of having a HR in each game came to an end yesterday. Many people had similar streaks. Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr. had 8 game streaks. Interestingly Barry and his late dad Bobby Bonds now have a cumulative 1000 HRs.

Conflicting Trends
Yesterday, the head of the Federal Reserve Board said that business are getting more freedom to raise prices (i.e., don't worry any more about disinflation). The stock market tanked with the Dj losing about 150 points. But, as if to show that not all is as it seems to be, the Washington Capitals announced they were lowering (yes thats right lowering) prices. The highest prices tickets went from $170 to $165. The lowest price tickets went from $17 to $14.

Weather again.
Two days after hitting 80F for the first time we hit 90F for the first time. If this keeps up we be over the boiling temperature by Memorial Day.
I lost another 2 tupids to squirrels.
The Orioles are in first place in the AL East for the first time in about a decade or so.

Weather and Grounds
It was 84 yesterday and will likely reach that again today. This is a good break from the early part of last week when the daytime temps were in the 40s. The Azaleas are still not out however because of the horribly cold January. Last year I planted 7 Jupiter Tulips (blooms 5" across). Two of them have been attacked by (I think) squirrels.
Last year I also planted some lilies and hyacinths. I had some early blooming hyacinths already but the new ones are still at least a week away. The lilly situation is interesting. Last year I tried propagating the lilies using the buds that form from the flowers. I'm getting a lot of shoots from these. Will they bloom? Stay tune.
Today I mowed the lawn for the first time. The mower started up with no problem. I used a type of gasoline refresher to dissolve the non flammable compounds that form over the winter in the gas can. The lawn service mowed it about the 8th of April.

Health Insurance for Cats
Ann did some research into insurance for our cat. Its available but the cat has to have a blood test, blood pressure check and heart rate count. Just like people.
Wizards Season Ended Last Night
Wizards season ended. Their record was 25-57. They finished the year with an 8-33
record on the road and a 3-21 record in the Atlantic Division.

A New Transit Event
I was waiting at the White Flint stop for the Ride-On 38 today when I actually saw someone put a bicycle on the front-of-the-bus bicyle rack. This is the first time I've observed this in all the years riding the bus (must be thousands of times) including buses in many different cities. Ironically, a friend came along before the 38 today so I got a ride home.
George told me that he has seen the bike on bus move a number of times even though he rides the bus less often than I (maybe riding the bus near a college town does something here).

Weather
Rain the past few days has been heavy. The sump pump was working most of the day today. Several inches of snow fell in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana.
Had some interesting food the past few days. Ann's walnut flounder came out very good. We had salmon paddies while visiting friends.. both times they came out pretty good. Also on the subject of food, Ann asked me to margarine up her matzah at lunch because "It always breaks when I do it".
Barry Bonds hit his 660th HR yesterday tying him with Willie Mays.

Another Passover Story
We went to the M&D Goldsteins for lunch then home for nap.
On the way back to synagogue I met one of my neighbors. We discussed mundane neighborhood stuff, e.g. a new retaining wall being built on Seven Locks Road. We said goodbye then he said (knowing it was still Passover),
"You know that Pharoah really was a son of a bitch".

Sedar story and baseball remark
I have a sedar memory story at: http://before1986.blogspot.com/ which also involves something that happened a few days ago.
Before supper on April 6, we were discussing baseball statistics because one of Beth's friends married a person who works as a baseball statistician. We mentioned 'stealing bases', one of the people in the room, not knowledgeable about baseball, "isn't that illegal".

Cold Baseball
Orioles won their opener yesterday 7-2 vs. Boston (at Balt). Javier Lopez hit a HR and Palmiero was 3 for 4. Game was played in temps hovering around 40F and a stiff 15-20mph wind. I figure the hot chocolate to beer ratio may have set a record. This morning I had to wear gloves and a stocking hat because on the way to the metrorail station from the White Flint parking lot.

Problems with the Do-it-Yourself Grocery check out
I only had four items today at the Montrose Crossing Giant. Of the 22 check out lines, the 5 do-it-yourself lines were much less crowded so I used one of them. Two items went OK: the grapes and the green peppers. I couldn't find the type of oranges I had purchased on the produce menu so after a while I just identified them as another type of orange. Then the carrots got me. I foolishly assumed the bagged #1 carrots were product (in fact they are grocery) so when the scanner picked up the bar code on the carrot bag it invalidated the purchase. This whole process had taken too long by then so I gave up.
It was cold all day; in the 30s and 40s.
Weather and a cleaning story
Today was the 5th day of cold and drizzly/rainy weather. We may actually have some snow showers tomorrow and more nights in the 20s beginning day after tomorrow. Yuck.
Conversation in Ice Cream store.
Me: well I emailed to the Vad HaKashrut (the council for kosher supervision in the DC area) and got an answer back in two days.
Neighbor: What about?
Me: On the subject of whether the consumer steam machine could substitute for boiling.
Neighbor: Can it?
Me: Yes
Neighbor: Good because I just finished using my steam cleaner for that today.

Tax stories and a transit complaint
Well I mailed the federal tax forms today: Ann and mine, Beth's and George's. Ann and I are paying more this year despite the tax cut. Several forces at work: refinancing reduced interest- a schedule A entry; we didn't donate a car to charity (as we did in 2002); Beth is no longer a dependent; and we raised the rent and lowered the maintenance costs at the rental property we own.
Some good news, however. The certified mail can now be tracked throught the USPS.com website so you don't need the return receipt.
Transit system problem. This has occurred a bunch of times. The people aren't even off the rail cars when the train starts to close the doors to meet its schedule. Yuck.
