Interesting Bridge Hand

My partner opened 2 diamonds (strong).
I held 6 clubs (no honors), 5 hearts (K and junk) and the 10 and 9 of diamonds.
I bid 2 Hearts
My partner bid 5 diamonds.
I bid 6 diamonds, it was doubled.
My partner had AKQJ and 3 low diamonds, AK of clubs, and QJ10x of spades.
The opening lead was the A of spades. Obviously we made it.

Interesting Business Plan

Over the past few days, I've had some people at my house doing body work on both our cars. They do the work with the cars parked in the driveway and bring all their own stuff. They do the work quickly, not as finished as a body shop but their prices are quite low. They seem to get work by cruising neighborhoods looking for cars with dents and knocking on doors and negotiating prices on the spot.

Another perfect Omlet

For the second Sunday in a row, I did a seven egg omlet and it came out perfect. Turned over and held together like a big pie. Turns out the secret is probably to use a skillet that has the right shape and surface - its doubtful that I've actually stumbled across something new.

Bizarre Tax Situation

George did work at the U of Md Hillel dining facility in calendar 2003. The U of Md was the employer. He received a W-2 from the State of Maryland Central Payroll Office. The W-2 had no medicare wages or withholdings, no social security wages or withholdings and no state wages in box 16. When I entered this in the taxcut software, the screen lit up with warning messages. Amazingly, I was actually able to speak with someone in the Central Payroll office (a toll free line too - person I spoke to was a Ron Shoemaker). Apparently there wages are FICA except. Also apparently, Md refuses to print anything in box 16 so everybody is to use the box 1 wages as both the federal and state wages. This is the 3rd oddball shehekiyanu in March 2004. - see Mar 21 and March 15.

Ann almost hit by bus; Walrus has a blog

Today Ann rode the #38 with me and got off before I did. She must not have noticed the traffic situation because she started to cross the street against traffic. The bus started forward and then lurched to a stop to avoid hitting her.

In other news, Kevin Shaw (aka the Walrus) is the second person in my immediate circle of friends to get a blog. His is at: http://blogging.com/view.php?user=walrusman444

He mentions me in his first post.

Prince

Last week Prince, or as I like to call him, the entertainer formerly known as the entertainer formerly known as Prince, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bob Seeger, George Harrison (as a solo), Jackson Browne, The dells, Traffic and ZZ Tops were also inducted. I have a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hat that I sometimes wear on travel. When the checkin clerk asks about the hat, I say that they give you a free hat when you are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and then I sometimes also say, "Of course you can also buy one at the gift shop."

Weather changes while shopping

We left the house today for a shopping trip (the one where we went to Katz's - see below). Between the time we left (about 1230pm) and the time we got back (about 300pm) the temp dropped from 50 to 40 and the wind chill dropped from 48 to 28. Yuk.

Evolution of Katz; visit by SAC

About 3 months ago, the owner of Kosher Mart told Ann that they (Tracy and Moti) had bought Katz. About 2 months ago they opened under the new management. They still don't have prices on a lot of things but there are many more employees able to help then a few weeks ago. Ann and I ate in the Katz cafe today for the first time. Service was slow because it was crowded but we had a good seat near the window and Ann admired the bottles filled with vinegar or oil and decorated with beans, red peppers, etc. in artzy shapes. Ann said it was the first time she had ever seen this. Second food related 'shechehinaynu' in a week.

Stanley Cohen visited earlier this weekend. This was the second time he stayed with us during Shabbat. The first was five years previously. We hope it will now be an annual event.

Fire on the Red Line

I got on the metrorail at White Flint. There was a delay, then we were told the train wouldn't be going past Van Ness. I eventually made my way back home. Ann assigned me some duties for the day.

New computer problem today

At work I was trying to send a message containing a large image (probably about 1 meg). The electronic mail wouldn't let me because it said I had no memory (the message, including the image would have gone in the 'Send' directory. So I deleted about 2 megs from my email. It still didn't go through. Then I saved the image in a common directory (that the recipient would have access to) and just sent the email (probably about 5 k byte). It still didn't go through. I spoke to some other people who had the same problem. Maybe a virus got in and ate some memory.

Some people are germ phobic

Today Ann and I were delivering groceries to Sonia Belek, the mother of a friend who lives in Hawaii. Ann knew Sonia had complained of catching cold from people before and she would deliver the groceries while I stayed in the car because I was getting over a cold. Sonia came to the door in rubber gloves and said, "Don't come in." They handled the groceries transfer and the check for the groceries via hand to gloved hand.

New tea bag holder

Ann and I both like our tea relatively weak and so we reuse tea bags. This requires something to put it in. Today we were eating and Ann said, "Oh, look, I have a new tea bag holder.". I said the 'Shechekyonu' prayer (thanking God for bringing me to this happy occasion).

Beth in NY. Cardinal in our yard.

Beth went to NY (Brooklyn) on Mar 12-14. Used the Oriental Express. M had a cold Mar 10-14. On Mar 12 we saw a red cardinal had died in our front yard. They almost look stuffed. I was thinking of proping it up and making it decorative but it might have started to stink.

Interesting dream

Last night I dreamt that I almost bought an 11 year old slice of watermelon. The melon was sealed in a tight plastic container. The clerk looked at it and began to calculate a price adjustment because of the melon being 11 years old. I asked what he was doing, then concluded I didn't want to buy it. Yesterday's meals had nothing especially dream inducing. Beth had made a nice frozen strawberry pie and a celery cabbage salad but I've had those before.

Trip to Mississippi

M in Mississippi Mar 4 and 5. On way back got a free glass of beer at Hartsfield airport (bad service to a nearby customer who had to get his plane just as the beer got there).

More Computer and telecom stuff

Well, our wireless router that we got in mid Nov died. CompUSA replaced it for free and I got another warrenty for $11.59 (last time it was $10.50). We also decided to get a new fax/answeringmachine/copier to replace the two part system we have now because reconfiguring the old system was too difficult.

CVS had a sale on wind chimes today. Got three.
