Still snow around; Ann wears sunglasses inside

We went to Seneca Park today. There was still snow in spots (actually in the shady spots near our synagogue, the snow is still a foot deep) even though it hasn't snowed in 6 weeks and we've had plenty of warmish days. Seneca Park has a nice 90 acre lake and lots of hiking trails. After going to the park we went to McGruder's in Gaithersburg (on the way back). Ann was wearing her sunglasses inside the store. First she called the clerk 'Ma'am' when it was a "Sir" with a lot of jewlery and long hair tied back. Then she tried to pay for it by swiping her driver's license card. The clerk was ticked off at the first one but got a good chuckle at the second one.

Buffy and Bullwinkle quotes in Indiana

I've been in Indiana this week (this entry being made from a Holiday Inn in Lafayette, IN). Early in the week I was taking a picture of a factory which will be hiring people because of a new highway. A truck driver came by to protest being in the picture. I was wearing a long black leather coat and large black hat. A person with me told the truck driver, in a Russian accent, "he was looking for new way to get rid of moose and squirrel". Later I was discussing a provision in a 2001 Appropriations Act which designated $100 Million for a highway. I referred to it as the impleting the following strategy: Want; Take; Have. (this was a line in season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Several people wrote this down and said they were going to refer to this constantly from now on.

During this trip, I also went by the Dan Quayle Vice Presidential Museum in Huntington, IN. Their symbol is, surprize, a quail. I didn't have time to go in.

Visit to Cats

Ann and I visited a neighbor who recently obtained two grey tabby cats. I had seen them at Petsmart. I'll be in Indiana Feb 23-26.

Doctor's Visit

M at the doctor today to discuss general stuff plus the sciatica symptoms earlier this month. My pulse was 60 and my blood pressure was 129/71, both pretty good for 53. He advised me not to do anything about the sciatica until symptoms reappear.

Ten by Fourteen Rug Day

Ann and I went to G Berg's to get a 10x14 rug he was discarding. We deposited it in the house and went out for lunch. After lunch we set it up. For some reason it disabled the TV for awhile but it is now back on.

Long Walk

Beth and I walked to Mogan David Synagogue and back today for Shaharit. Round trip about 9 miles. They have a 19 year old Israeli cantor who looks like a 19 yr old Elvis Presley, slightly higher voice and very good. Beth wanted to go before he left because she hears he isn't happy working there. They had him do the intro prayers, shaharit, all the torah laining and musuf. Within a few minutes somebody had heard that I had walked there and they gave me the 4th aliya. Someone offered me snuff during the service. We think virtually no one in the Congregation speaks English as a native language. At the kiddush, there were conversations in french, arabic and hebrew. We saw a dead deer on Executive Blvd on the way (in downtown Rockville). There was heavy ice on a lot of the sidewalks despite the fact that it has been over 2 weeks since the snowstorm.

George reported that they had snow in Israel today. There was also snow in Texas, all the way to the Rio Grande river.

Traffic Camera Arrest

Today, I'm paying a $75 traffic ticket (no points) issued by Montgomery Cnt. based on a traffic camera set up in Rockville which took a picture of our car going through a red light at 1136am on Jan 25, 2004 (Sunday) at Old Georgetown and Edson. Beth thinks she was the driver. The citation had an image of the car at a red light at 11:36:43 and one with the car in the intersection at 11:36:44.

A Beth Story

Beth and I were talking. She said that one of her friends was a big supporter of Sen John Edwards (D-NC) for President. I said that there was another John Edwards, a successful phony psychic. Beth hadn't heard of him. I said, "Well you have to admire someone with a better scam going than you have (this is an expression of someone I knew in the Navy)" Beth (still working at here 25 hr/wk $20/hr job) responded, "Well, that would be almost anyone".

Ice and Snow Slowly Melting

The Ice on the sidewalk near the bus stop I use in the am has been there now for over 2 weeks despite several days we've had with the max over 40F. The sciatica symptoms of a week ago are now gone. Yay. :<)

ICK more weather

Ice storm began last night. Lasted all day. Sidewalks slippery for last 24 hours. Temperatures near 32F. Fortunately there has been just enough melting to keep the ice off the powerlines and electricity is working fine. Our nat gas bill last month was $260; highest yet since we moved here.

More Weather Stuff and a possible medical bummer

The early Feb ice maps of the Chesepeake Bay are even worse than they were last week. About 85% of the Chesapeake is ice covered. Mt Washington NH had its coldest month ever in Jan averaging -6.5F. Boston had its coldest January in 70 years. DC had its coldest Jan in 25 years. We had an all day rain today and the sidewalks still have lots of ice.

A few days ago, I had some leg pains. The pains are jumping around a big now and its consistent with an inflamation of the sciatic nerve - this would be a bummer if it turned out to be the case. Of course it could be a pinched nerve.

Ice

On the 29th of Jan, virtually all the Cheseake Bay north of the Bay Bridge was ice covered and much of the area south was covered. The Potomac was frozen almost all the way to the bay. Our sidewalk has ice over much of it and tomorrow we may have an ice storm. Yuck.
